David Anderson
David Anderson lives in Minnesota with with wife Rebecca and their Teddy Bear puppy Buddy. An avid dog lover his whole life, David has translated that passion into his writing. Growing up on a farm, David was exposed to all sorts of animals; raising Cattle, Sheep, Hogs, Horses, and Chickens, as well as caring for his families dogs and cats. "Some of my favorite memories as a child involve running through the pasture with my dogs, and lazy summer days spent lying in the grass with all the animals" Anderson said. "As a young boy I really wanted to be a veterinarian, and while I eventually chose a different path, my passion for animals never wore off." That passion for animals continued as he graduated college and started to make his way into the world. Mr. Anderson launched LP Media, a company that is dedicated to promoting and educating the public about the joys of pet ownership. The company started small, but quickly grew and now helps over a million pet owners every month. Anderson continues to write and search for ways to help other people who are contemplating the decision to become a pet owner. "My work is never done" he said. "I love helping other people and providing great resources that they can use to help better their lives, and the lives of their pets. I plan on continuing to create great products that help pet owners for as long as I can!"

Chapter 1 | TEDDY BEAR PUPPIES: A HISTORY OF THE CROSS-BREED
shitzu_low.jpgThe term Teddy Bear Puppy
is most commonly used when referring to the cross breed of a Bichon Frise and a Shih Tzu. This cross breed is also known as a Shichon or a Zuchon, but the term Teddy Bear Puppy
or Teddy Bear Dog
has become the most commonly used term in describing the breed over the past 10 years.
The exact origins of the Teddy Bear puppy are not well documented. Since both the parent breeds have been common in America since the mid 1900’s, there have most likely been accidental cross breedings between a Bichon and a Shih Tzu at different times over the past 50-70 years. These original Teddy Bears were likely just referred to as mutts since the popularity of cross-bred designer dogs didn’t really start until the late 1980’s and early 1990’s.
Other cross-breeds have tried to garner the name Teddy Bear Dog
in the past, however, none have stuck like the Bichon/Shih Tzu cross.
Early Types of Teddy Bear Puppies
On May 20th 1991 in the Sun-Journal of Lewiston, Maine an article appeared documented the efforts of a private dog breeder named Steven M. Brown to create a Teddy Bear Dog
that exhibited the characteristics of a cuddly teddy bear. Mr. Brown aimed to achieve this ideal dog, dubbed a Charlie Bear
by cross-breeding a Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier and the Portuguese Water dog. The goal was to create a mild tempered companion dog that would make the ideal pet for a family. However, the name, and cross-breed didn’t stick and the Charlie Bear
quietly faded away.
The late 1990’s exhibit the earliest records of a reference to the name Shichon or Zuchon. An article appearing on the website dogpage.us in 1997 is the first internet reference to the cross-breed. This srticle served as a brief summary of the basics of the breed and referenced both the Shih Tzu and Bichon Frise parentage of the dogs. However, the article contained no mention of the breeds history or orgins, which remain unclear to this day.
Where Did the Cross-Breed Come From?
167271.jpgEven some of the most well-recognized individuals in the teddy bear community can’t pin down the breeds exact origins. Ashley Lack, who runs the incredibly popular Facebook group: Shichons, isn’t positive on where or when the breed actually started:
"I’m honestly not exactly sure what the breeds origins are, besides that the two parents would make a great puppy because of the Bichon & Shit-tzu’s positive characteristics. :)
Some Shichons have been bred as therapy dogs. They can serve as therapy dogs for children with Autism, be seizure-alert dogs, or work as service dogs. They also were bred because of their non-shedding coat, which is good for people with allergies. I feel once people have found out about their personalities though; they’ve grown in popularity (especially in the last year) because they’re such great companions!"
Three Names, One Dog: Shichons, Zuchons, and Teddy Bears
The cross-breed maintained the name Shichon, and less commonly Zuchon
, through the 1990’s until breeders started referring to them as Teddy Bear Puppies
starting in 2003. The cute name was very memorable and acted as a great marketing tool for breeders. The term Teddy Bear Puppy
is a lot easier to remember and more fun to say than Shichon
or Zuchon
.
During the mid 2000’s the breed began to gain more and more popularity, starting in the Midwest: Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, and Iowa and slowly spreading across the country.
As the breed continued to gain fans, the name also gained massive popularity and by the year 2006 Teddy Bear Dog
had over twice as many Google searches as both the terms Shichon
and Zuchon
combined.
In fact, in an apparent effort to capitalize on the growing popularity of the name, a small breeder in Wisconsin attempted to start the American Teddy Bear Association
in 2003 and claimed to be the only one authorized to sell the dogs under the name Teddy Bear Puppy
. The breeders even went as far as to sell franchises
to other dog breeders granting them the rights to use the name Teddy Bear Puppy
. However, in 2007 the Wisconsin Division of Securities quickly ruled that the sale of these unregistered franchises was not legal and ordered them to be revoked.
Still, the name Teddy Bear Puppy
has continued to gain popularity and acceptance across the United States over the past 20 years. Now there are teddy bear puppies in virtually all 50 states and breeders located in over 35 states.
There are also several less common names used to refer to the breed: Fuzzy Wuzzy pups, Rag Doll dogs, and Ewaoks. These terms are usually region specific and haven’t gained the widespread use like teddy bear puppies
has.
Growing in Popularity
The breed is still most popular in the Midwest, with over 27% of all visitors to Miniteddybearpuppies.com coming from Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, and Iowa. However, both coasts have also embraced the teddy bear puppy as New York and California are the 4th and 8th ranked states with the most visitors.
One thing is for sure, as time goes on the teddy bear puppy continues to gain more and more popularity. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect that in 15-20 years it will become as common and popular as almost any dog breed in the world.
Chapter 2 | WHAT IS A TEDDY BEAR PUPPY?
167340.jpgAs a mix between the Bichon Frise and Shih Tzu breeds, the Teddy Bear Puppy has many of the same characteristics of its parents. Soft, cuddly, and hypo-allergenic, many of its owners believe it is the perfect dog.
Ashley Lack, creator of the Shichons Facebook group, agrees:
Shichons are the most amazing pups. They care deeply about their families, following them room-to-room, even to
check up" on them! They love to play, & when properly trained, will only chew their toys.
Shichons also have this intelligence in their eyes I’ve never seen before looking into another animal’s eyes. They really, truly understand what you are saying when you speak to them. An example of this with my 7 year-old Shichon, Ella is the fact that my family & I started spelling the word walk
when we were ready to go & she figured out what that meant! They are highly trainable, picking up tricks very quickly. Ella can fetch, wave, dance, sit, lay, sit up (on her back legs), high five, & shake. She also has great instincts.
When I became very ill with kidney problems, she was a gentle, constant companion! Many members of Shichons note that their dog has done the same thing while they’ve been feeling under the weather or are upset. Overall, they are just a perfect family dog!"
163006.jpgWhy Are They Called Teddy Bears
The term Teddy Bear
has become popular with the breed not only because it sounds cute, but because when the dogs are young, they actually resemble a Teddy Bear! This is mostly due to their small size, delicate features, fluffy coat, large eyes, and general resemblance to a stuffed teddy bear.
Many owners have also noticed that their facial features and longer hair makes many older teddy bear puppies resemble an Ewok
from the popular Star Wars franchise. In fact many of the cute Dog Ewok
Halloween costumes you may have seen are actually teddy bear puppies. Because of this uncanny resemblance, a few people have even come to refer to the dogs as Ewoak puppies.
AKC Recognition
Teddy Bears are not an officially recognized breed of dog by the AKC. However, it is possible that with several more generations of breeding and growing popularity they will be able to gain acceptance. If and when that happens it will most likely be under the name Shichon
or Zuchon as it seems unlikely the tight-collared members of the AKC would ever consider a dog named a
Teddy Bear Puppy"
The Physical Characteristics
163049.jpgTeddy Bear dogs can grow to be up to 20 lbs., but usually weigh between 11-16 when fully grown. They can be a mixture of different colors including white, black, and many different shades of brown. This adds to their appeal amongst dog owners because two Teddy Bears almost never look completely similar.
Teddy Bears are extremely loyal dogs and love physical contact. It is not unusual for a Teddy to take a midday nap on your lap, or at your feet. They usually get along very well with other pets, especially other dogs, and are very good with small children. In fact, they started out being bred as therapy dogs for children with disabilities. Their mild temperament makes them the perfect companion for just about anyone. They do not typically bark, but they will if they sense danger, or when someone new enters their house for the first time.
Most teddy bears are also hypo-allergenic, which makes them perfect for anyone with allergies. They have typically been bred to produce very little dander, so even if you are allergic to most dogs, a Teddy might be perfect for you!
Chapter 3 | CHOOSING A PUPPY
163199.jpgYour research is clear and the verdict for the best possible puppy for your family is a Teddy Bear. Congratulations! Now you can just go out and make a purchase, right? WRONG! Your journey to find the best dog is just beginning. Choosing the right breed (or hybrid) is a great first step. But buying a dog is a big commitment - a commitment for life. So the process of selecting the right breed attributes for your lifestyle is critical. Careful consideration and choosing the right puppy can offer a quality life of unconditional love and companionship, good temperament, and health. Making a haphazard
