    No wonder I was excited. My boyfriend, Jake, was taking me to meet his Mom and Dad for the first time.

    We’d been dating for over a year and Jake had already met my parents on numerous occasions, but this was my first chance to get to know his folks.

    I guess I was a bit nervous, as well as excited. My parents are just like, you know, your ordinary Mom and Dad, clam bakes and tenpin bowling sort of people, not world famous celebrities like Jake’s parents are. Jake’s Dad is the Klaus Hofstadter, conductor of the New York Philharmonia Orchestra, and his Mom, well, step Mom, is the Rhonda Bakewell-Hofstadter, the world famous soprano and grand opera diva. The fact that Jake’s parents are celebrity musicians made the visit even more exciting, and nerve wracking, because I’m diploma grade piano student and hope to one day become a celebrity virtuoso myself.

    The butterflies were sure churning around in my stomach.

    Come on, Jake. Step on it. We don’t want to be late.

    Jake’s got a nice car. His parents are rich. They can afford a Corvette Roadster for their nineteen-year-old son, but Jake was driving so slow it felt like he was pedaling.

    He grinned. Jake looked a bit nervous himself.

    What’s the big hurry?

    Jake usually drives nice and fast, but tonight he was being such a slow coach it was almost as if he didn’t want me to meet his folks. Perhaps he didn’t want to introduce me to his famous Mom and Dad. I’m afraid I’m not very sophisticated. I come from a homely, church going family. Maybe Jake thought I was going to embarrass him in front of his folks. I had my best dress on, a nice silk and polyester
