    Masked - J. Thiele

    Prologue

Kevin and Leena both joined the same law firm straight out of University. From the beginning, they had high expectations of themselves, far higher than even their boss Tony Swanson had of them. They were go-getters and wanted more from their careers than just the title of being lawyers, they wanted to be partners at one of the biggest names in the industry. ‘Swanson and Swanson Legalities .’" So it was no surprise to anyone that when an opening arose, both Kevin and Leena put their best foot forward in hopes of getting a look in. But things were going to get ugly between them, as most battles do.

Leena had stayed awake most nights preparing for every court session scheduled for the following day, and doing whatever it took to take the win. She was a shark and a big one that was stuck in a little tank. She prided herself on scoring the most wins per caseload out of all the new lawyers who had joined the firm since she and Kevin had four years earlier.

Kevin was a crowd favorite. He was good-looking, popular and smart to boot. His claim to fame was that he had taken on the more substantial caseload out of them all, and was only a few wins behind his rival Leena.

Tony Swanson was the C.E.O. of Swanson and Swanson Legalities. He left his previous firm and started his own company when his son Daryl graduated with honours and agreed to work side-by-side with his father. The truth was, Tony had his own agenda for wanting his son to work so closely with him, he tried to keep a close eye on him and make sure he was staying out of trouble, but that in itself was proven to be easier said than done.

By the time Leena and Kevin were on-board, people had stopped talking about Daryl. No one ever thought to question Tony about the other Swanson who was suggested in the name of the firm. Most, like Kevin, naturally assumed the other namesake must have been Tony’s late father who was also a lawyer until he’d passed away from heart failure long before most current employees had even finished grade school.

No one knew what was masked behind Tony Swanson’s smile, and nobody was prepared for what would unfold at the D&D Gala event, least of all Kevin and Leena.

    Chapter 1

Leena strutted into the office early, armed with documents and files, ready for battle. She and that bastard Kevin had been rivals ever since they’d joined the firm fresh out of Uni. Now there was talk of an opening for a new partner, and they were both anxious to fill the position. Leena being one of the very few women in the firm was not going down without a fight. Fuck! she spat under her breath when she noticed that Kevin was already sitting at his computer. Son of a bitch!

Morning Leena, Kevin called out to Leena when he heard her slam her files down on her desk. She could have wiped that condescending smirk right off his face, and if she could just run into him outside of work hours, she’d be happy to make that happen.

Morning Kevin, She smiled half-heartedly. Ya cocky little fucker, she lowered her tone so he couldn’t hear her.

Kevin turned back to his computer, Arrogant bitch, he muttered under his breath. I can’t wait to see you crumble and die, ya man hatin’ lesbo.

Tony Swanson, the lead counsel, stepped out of the elevator and headed straight for Kevin’s office. He greeted him with a quick, Ah glad I caught you. Then he stepped inside closing the door behind him. Leena kept her eyes on them desperately trying to lip-read through the glass walls. She was well aware that the old bastard had a soft spot for the little shit. He was probably giving him the heads up on how to gain the edge. For the first time, she actually resented the soundproof glass that separated their offices. Even their facial expressions were hard to read. ‘Too bad,’ she thought to herself, ‘Numbers don’t lie.’ Though Kevin had taken on more cases than Leena, her success rate was above his. That had to count for something, right?

Hey Tony, how are you? Kevin addressed the older lawyer as he stood and shook his hand. It’s good to see you.

Kevin was always smart enough to know exactly which side his bread was buttered on, he knew the aging senior partner had a soft spot for him, everybody did. He was always prattling on about how Kevin reminded him of himself when he was younger. Leena felt bile in the back of her throat every time she heard the same boring story come spewing out of Tony’s mouth, but Kevin feasted on it and used it to his every advantage.

I’m not too bad for an old bloke, he replied as he sat opposite the arrogant schmuck. But I’m here on official business Kevin, I need a favor.

Name it, Kevin jumped in eager to
