Chapter 1: Change Limiting Beliefs
What are Beliefs?
Do you ever take the time to think about your beliefs? What are your beliefs? How many do you have? What is a belief? To answer these questions, we need to first think about what a belief is. There is no short answer to this question, but we will make a summary of the important aspects.
A belief is a perception. Think about how you perceive the world around you? You see with your eyes, you hear with your ears, you feel with your skin, you smell with your nose, you taste with your tongue.
Those are the five senses. We, as humans, go through the world perceiving things with our five senses. However, not everyone knows that humans have more than five senses. That’s right. We do, and not just six senses or seven senses or eight. No, humans have many, many senses.
They can be a sense of balance, sense of time, sense of direction, and many more. We sense the world in ways we realize and ways we don’t. So what do our senses have to do with beliefs?
Well, if senses are how we perceive the world, then beliefs are our conditioned perceptions.
What are Conditioned Perceptions?
If we think about the way we perceive things based on our senses, how do we know all of the factors that are influencing our perceptions? Is it possible that there are things outside of our five senses that may be influencing how we perceive things around us? Of course, there are.
This is where memories come in. Think about a memory you have. It can be any memory. Any at all. It can be a memory from your childhood. It can be a time from your adolescence that you remember. It could be the house you grew up in that you still almost smell. It could be a feeling of falling and scraping your knee. It could be a memory from your teenage years. First dates. Crushes, romances. You can pick a memory from just yesterday. What did you have for breakfast? How was your day? What was your mood like?
Okay, you’ve got your memory? Now think about it really hard. Try to reach into your mind and experience all of the senses in that memory. Take those feelings into your mind and heart. How do you feel?
Was this a good memory or was it a bad memory? Was it a positive memory or was it a negative memory? Now we’re onto something. The way we remember things, either by choice or otherwise, affect our current perception of the world.
This is called a conditioned perception. It is the phenomenon of past experiences affecting how we see things today. And more importantly, it’s the way that we have interpreted those memories throughout our lives.
This can have a major psychological impact on our day-to-day lives. Do you like dogs, or do you hate dogs? Why is that? What are your past experiences with dogs like? If you were bitten by a dog as a child, your perception of dogs may forever be changed by that experience. It’s something that you may very well take with you for the rest of your life. So next time you have a strong reaction to something in your day-to-day life, try to take a moment and think about why you
