About this ebook

“When a woman gives birth to a baby, there is always a celebration. When that child is a baby boy, the happiness and pride of the parents are more pronounced” so goes a local saying. This was the case on 30th July, 1942, at the ancient town of Twon Brass, when the Lord blessed Chief Claude Diete-Amangi and his wife, Princess Sarah Ann Diete-Amangi, nee Olali Okhai, with a handsome dark- complexioned child whom they named Alfred. Members of the family felt happy and had high hopes because they believed their lineage had been extended with the addition of little Alfred, their seventh child.

And their high hopes weren’t misplaced either. For, as it turned out, he was destined to bring honor and fame to the family the way no one else before had done.

Little Alfred’s momentous journey to greatness began in 1945, when he was enrolled into the kindergarten from where his academic baptism began. Three years later, in 1948, he graduated into the St. Luke’s primary School, Nembe Brass, where he schooled till 1951.

The next year, 1952, young Alfred left St. Luke’s for another primary school, St. Joseph’s, Tiko, in Cameroun, where he concluded his primary education, strolling out with a clean First School Leaving Certificate in 1955. St. Joseph College, Sasse, Binea, also in Cameroun, was his next port of academic call between 1956-1960 where he bounced out with a sound Grade I school Certificate. In 1961, he was back to Nigeria. At Oshodo near Lagos, young Alfred enrolled at the Meteorological School where he bagged a diploma in meteorology.

With the Diploma Certificate, he gained admission into the NNS QUORRA BASIC Seamanship School in 1962 as a Cadet Captain.

His studies and training took him to the United Kingdom where between 1962 and 1965, he went through the military mill of the Britannia Royal Naval College Dartmouth.

Here, the Meteorological Officer added the Ships Diving Officer’s Certificate as well as Diving Instructor’s Certificate to his academic cum professional collections.
