SECTION 1: HOW ORTHODONTICS TRANSFORMS LIVES

    1. ORTHODONTICS: WHAT ON EARTH IS IT ANYWAY?

What you’ll learn in this chapter:

There is more to orthodontics than braces

Dentists and orthodontists are different and it’s important to understand the difference

    Common orthodontic problems.

I imagine many people want to skip on by after reading the title for this chapter, however doing so would leave you short of valuable information. You can allay your concerns that I’ll bore you with the technical ins and outs of orthodontic conditions. A brief history, combined with some important foundation information, this chapter is about educating and expanding your awareness about what orthodontics really is.

Let’s start with a little history

When most people think of orthodontics, they think of braces, but orthodontics is much more than that. It’s important to make a distinction here. Braces are not what gets results; it’s the skill of the orthodontist that gives you the ultimate prize – the life-changing experience and a smile you love.

Orthodontics is the study of teeth and the relationship between the upper and lower jaws and how teeth bite together. More recently, orthodontics has also morphed into the cosmetic aspects of teeth lining up, i.e. sitting straight.

You might be surprised to learn orthodontic treatment has been around for a relatively long time. Even as far back as Egyptian times³, people were looking for, and applying different methods to straighten teeth. Whether it was for cosmetic, functional or other reasons, there has been an interest and desire to understand and to make a difference to our teeth for millennia. As the mechanics of the science evolved, and the study of dentistry advanced, the understanding of what is possible through effective treatment has become appreciated more deeply. In parallel with this increase in understanding, treatments have advanced too. Technologies have become more effective, evidenced in the materials used, reduced treatment times, and the application of different techniques.

As an orthodontic student, I learned the American practitioner Edward Angle⁴, considered the father of modern orthodontics, defined the way teeth should bite together for the best function and balance for chewing, speaking and appearance. During the first decades of the twentieth century, Angle’s insights were a pivotal influence in the study and practice of orthodontics. His influence continues, and many aspects of treatment devised by Angle over a century ago are still part of orthodontic practice and philosophy
