EPICURUS
The great philosopher of the Hellenistic period, Epicurus, had his own imprints on philosophy with the self developed Epicureanism. In addition to these Hedonistic ethics, he was well versed in materialistic metaphysics. He was the first to put forward the concept of ‘atoms’ as the basic constituents of macroscopic particles. His philosophy was emphasized the need of Ataraxia- Peace and freedom from fear- and Aponia as the essences to lead a life with peace and tranquility. In his teachings, Epicurus urged others to refrain oneself from superfluous desires and achieve tranquility eliminating the fear of punishments or rewards from God. According to his ethics, only Universe is eternal and unending and the events in our life are controlled only by motion of the microscopic
