About the Author
This book is dedicated to those who faithfully walked with me through the early years of ministry in King’s Highway Ministries and Breakthrough Workshops. Their hunger for the Lord pushed me to grow in my own spiritual walk while learning to mentor and disciple others.
Foreword
People all over the world struggle with the same dilemma. They want their lives to change for the better. They want to have good, loving, healthy relationships. They want to be free from hurts, anxiety, depression, and hopelessness. But year after year, regardless of what they try to do to change, everything in their lives seems to remain the same or simply get worse. Many feel as if they are trapped in a maze from which they can never escape.
Marcia Chang Vogl’s book, The Path Forward, gives the reader powerful tools that will help willing souls find their way out of that maze of hopelessness. Her insight into the process by which wounded people put up barriers in their lives to both God and other people will help bring revelation that is a first step toward freedom.
The spiritual principles that the author teaches in this volume are worth their weight in gold and will make the difference between living life freely or living like the walking dead.
I have personally seen the fruit of Marcia Chang Vogl’s ministry of inner healing and can vouch for the powerful effect her anointed teaching has had on many lives. Her words of wisdom—if followed—will move you forward on the path of true freedom for your life.

Acknowledgments
How I appreciate my faithful husband, Rich, who supported me through the years of study and training that culminated in this book! He took on added responsibilities while I attended classes and conferences. His service mindedness knows the value of helping others and has been an added inspiration to me. I am also grateful for his editing and posing of thoughtful questions during this writing process.
With a grateful heart I acknowledge my longtime friend and prayer partner Gail Downey for her encouragement and accountability. Although at times we were on individual paths in pursuit of the Lord, the hours of our discussions and processing has nourished my soul. We have been eyes and ears for each other as well as prayer covering. She has added her photography talent to this book with my portrait. She has also helped edit and revise this project.
I also thank Linda Barnhurst for her insights, which have helped me constructively see this material through the eyes of a wise psychologist and Christian friend.
A heartfelt thanks to Rita Langeland, my colleague in ministry and my greatest cheerleader. Her leadership inspires me to do more challenging things.
Last but not least, I give thanks to my son James for adding his photography and graphic design talents to another of Mom’s projects.
Purpose of the Book
This book is written for those who have committed themselves to the Christian life and would like to have a deeper spiritual walk with God. Many times people have told me they need some ways to make their Christianity deeper and more real in everyday living. Just going to church on Sunday, joining potlucks, singing in the choir, or being in Bible study discussions was not satisfying enough. Some felt stymied and as if they had reached the end of their journey, yet they knew the journey was not over. They were ready to make some changes. If this describes you, then this book is for you.
Over the years of meeting with people in individual personal prayer ministry, I realized I was teaching some basic principles over and over. In order to expand, I taught workshops for groups of six to ten people. Since I believe we must connect action to our faith, I developed exercises to help establish good spiritual patterns that could become habits for a foundation of spiritual growth in what I called the path forward.
The teachings of this book parallel the workshops I developed. The areas addressed are biblical principles for people to implement in their daily lives in order to walk in the ways of Christ. Many whom I have counseled knew about Christ and His teaching, but few knew how to truly implement the principles of Christian living in encountering Christ.
There are four major life processes most needed to get on the path to Christian living. Each is necessary.
The first process is healing the heart. Physical wounds can be seen and identified, but wounding in the heart is hidden and elusive. Wounds of the heart are usually detected by the bad fruit they produce. Too often we think the bad fruit is the problem, but the tree that is producing that fruit is the real problem. That tree is growing in our heart. God looks upon our hearts as well as our bodies, as we are whole beings. We come to know this wholeness through the healing power of Jesus, but only when our hearts are healed. Often our heart is closed because of a past wounding. It becomes difficult or almost impossible to make changes in lifestyle no matter how great the desire. A wounded heart builds up both visible and invisible walls that block the love of God from entering. The wounds block the love of others from nourishing us. To grow as a Christian, one must release healing to those hidden wounds that block us along life’s path.
The second process is sanctification. This process addresses our spiritual condition. Accepting Jesus as both Lord and Savior changes our position with God. This is referred to as salvation. Sanctification changes our condition before God. When we become pure and holy in mind, body, and spirit, we can go forward in the things of God. Without sanctification, Satan has access to our lives to kill, steal, and destroy our destiny. God calls us to be holy as He is holy (1 Cor. 1:2; 1 Thess. 4:7). A loving God would not ask us to be something that is totally impossible. He makes it possible for our condition to be sanctified.
The third process is righteousness. God is a personal God.
