About this ebook

Human Cloning, by virtue of its achievement in the field of medico-science, has sparked a big controversy across the globe. In the contemporary world, being a global village, no one can claim to be untouched by it. It wont take much time to succeed in its attempt to creep into human society as the other discoveries and inventions have done in the past. Nevertheless religion has never left science all alone to move on as it wished to make its way into the human society. Religion being the core of human society has always checked such developments, some time due to her vital role in the society and sometimes due to her legal doctrines that never allow her to think otherwise. The objective of this book is to scrutinize the development in the field of Human Cloning in the light of its intentions and implication in marriage, family and the larger society. In order to fulfill the objective of this book, the author has attempted to compare the first mother called Edenic Eve from Christian literature with first claimed human clone from the field of science. The primary role of Christian Ethics has been to scrutinize all controversial issues in the society for its good. Scrutinizing human cloning is one such attempt.

This book from me is part of their vision for our times and the future generation. Their modeled life has been an inspiration for last 21 Year. Words of acknowledgment in this book will never suffice their contribution in my life as well as innumerable friends all around the world.

I am indebted to New Theological College where I arrived for the first time on 5th May 1992. Since then it has contributed in me so much that I will always be indebted to. My interest in Christian Ethics and the further drive to influence policy makers towards a better environment for our future generation comes from this community. I am indebted to all my theological teachers at New Theological College. My two Principals in the college, Rev. Dr. P. B. Thomas and Rev. Dr. Simon Samuel, who have been a motivation all along this writing. My keen interest in Christian Ethics and desire for biblical foundation for my research comes from them.

Dr. and Mrs. Sam Thomas, who have been my mentors, their dreams for me and my family, have inspired me to take one day at a time.

Rev. and Mrs. Varghese Samuel, the President of Christian Evangelist Assemblies and Rev. and Mrs. K. J. Kuriakose, the former President of CEA, who have watered my soul with the Word of God.

Mr and Mrs Gladwin, My sister and brother –in – law; Rev. and Mrs. Vinod Abraham my brother and sister in law, who have always made it a point to uphold me with love and prayers to see me excel in life.

Dr.& Mrs. Samuel George, who made me think that a book is possible.

This book would not have become a reality without the constant support of my wife Lydia, and children Sambhav & Saakshiyah. Without their sacrifices this venture would not have become a reality. It’s their forbearance that enables me to take up small ventures.

    INTRODUCTION

T he world has never progressed without new discoveries and inventions. Though Science has given so much to the world, yet she has left her consumers spellbound on many occasions, due to her constant willful ignorance of pros and cons of its rightful achievements. Also it has never been easy for science to implement her goals and achievements, as she desired. The consumer society, for whom science survives, has always checked the inventions of science by the scanners of religion; ultimately bringing science and religion to face one another. When the world has stepped into a new millennium, that is the 21 century, science has reached so far and so above, making humankind proud of her inbuilt ability to discern, discovers and devise. Religion has never left it all alone, religion being a core component of human society, has always tried to play the role of a traffic police, irrespective of the fact that science has in some occasions tried to cross and reach her own destinations.

Cloning, specifically human cloning being the most decisive and significant scientific achievement of 21 century, it would be appropriate to call this era as Clonage.¹ It all began when, some fifty years ago, on 25th April 1953, Francis Crick and James Watson announced the unraveling of the structure of Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA).² It was a significant moment in the history of biology – in fact, all science. DNA was no ordinary molecule – it was the substance of which chromosomes and genes were made. It was indeed the gleam of life. Since then there has been constant attempt to clone human beings. Though cloning among human beings has not become feasible thus far, there has been a strenuous attempt to make it a reality some day. In most of the attempts there are claims of cloning up to embryonic stage. There are also claims coming from different quarters of fertility experts, scientists, and cults, who have successfully cloned a full human being. Keeping aside the debate on the authenticity of the claims and taking into consideration the scope of scientific advancement which has never in history attempted in vain, the objective of this book is to look into the development in the field of Human Cloning, especially to deal with the intensions and implications of human cloning in a macrocosmic manner. It must be always kept in mind that, a ‘human clone’ is a time-delayed identical twin of another person. A clone is a not an exact replica of the original, but just a much younger identical twin. As with identical twins, the original person will have different fingerprints.³

Medical science is a gift of God. It has benefited innumerable people across the globe through centuries. The wisdom granted to man is always meant for human welfare and survival, to some extend science has been faithful to it. In a world of so many incurable diseases, such as, Sickle Cell Anemia, Cystic Fibrosis, Thalassemias, Hemophilia and Phenylketonuria, infertility etc. science needs to find way out. Human cloning is an answer to such a problem. Though human cloning has not feasible
