Dedication
To God who moved me to write this piece of work. May He be glorified. To my friends who sat through countless conversations with me when I actually was not listening but thinking of the plot and characters of this book. To Dad and Mom, Yeyama, Ntsika and Skhuselo, my family without whose love and support any of this would have been possible. Finally, to Marcia, Johnny and Zolani who unwittingly acted out the parts of Refiloe, Johnny, and Zechariah respectively.
When the world ended I was there.
When the mountains crumbled to dust and debris I was there.
When the coastal cities were swallowed by the stormy seas I was there.
We were there.
When the world ended we were there.
Episode 1
The Eleven
WAR broke out. It was unlike anything that had ever been seen before. It was unbelievable. There was war in heaven!
The general of the rebel forces stood atop a great mountain overlooking the grand scene. Before him a brawl of immense proportions took place. Angel met angel in an all-out battle for the dominion of the entire universe. It was a war unlike any. I, too, watched on as the conflict ensued. This was heaven, a place of serenity, peace, perfection, joy and love. This was an ugly thing to behold.
I turned my attention to the instigator of it all. He was a tall and beautiful creature. It was a marvel that such a noble creature could start a war such as this. In the fiend’s eye I could see the gleam of madness. On his face was the mask of confidence. This was a desperate attempt on his part. He knew the power of God. He knew that this was a suicide mission. Something, however, urged him on. Something prompted him in this direction. It was that insane idea that he could actually win.
The sky was wide and clear about us. The landscape flowed far in all directions. It was an ocean of green beauty intermingled with bright spots of living colour. Heaven was not a place of war. Everything taking place about us was an ugly stain on this beautiful canvas. In the valley before us, weapon met weapon in a clash of supernatural powers. Above us, in the air, mighty explosions broke out. The intensity of this melee was almost palpable.
I glanced back at the general. He was looking right at me. He grinned. Without warning the fiend exploded into flight. Suddenly he was a beam of light that bulleted through the sky coming straight towards us. I stood there with the Eleven huddled in a little circle on a high plateau. We each clutched a small box in our hands. We all knew that we had to protect these items even with our very lives. Somehow these boxes were of utmost importance.
With a mighty blast the general landed sending dust and debris into the air. A cloud of dust wrapped about him and hid him from our sight. He stood in the haze for a short while as if to savour the moment before he made his approach. When he stepped closer we could feel the power exuding from his being. Between him and us were ten full metres but it felt as if he were only inches away. My whole body grew tense with fear. I could also sense the apprehension in the Eleven behind me. I took in a deep breath and called out the general’s name bravely.
Lucifer!
Lucifer—the great dragon—cleared the smog and stopped his approach, on his face a wicked grin. He took pleasure in our terror. His eyes were locked on mine. His cold stare seemed to penetrate into my thoughts. I almost lost all hope but then I remembered whose side we were on.
Do not fear,
came His voice from behind. It was melodious and strong. It imbued us with confidence once again. Do not fear. This battle is not yours. It is the LORD’s.
Courage revived and my attention broke from the general’s cold glare. The Eleven and I turned back to see our Champion—Michael, the Son of God.
Where am I?
Sibusiso exclaimed, surfacing from his deep sleep. He cast his eyes about quickly to determine his surroundings. Sweat was on his brow and chest. He breathed heavily. His mind was racing. When his eyes adjusted to the darkness he realized that he was in his bedroom. Around him was not the scene of a battlefield. He was home. He was safe.
Another one,
Sibusiso whispered, now sitting up in his bed. He pushed his blankets aside and climbed off. "Another dream. This time longer, more vivid… and much scarier. Hau bantwini¹! What is all this? He stood up and walked to the sliding door. He parted the lace curtains and slid the door open. As he stepped out onto the balcony a warm breeze embraced him. The orange afternoon sky hung silently above him in contrast to the city landscape below. The bustle of the business hours could still be heard. The faint scent of the city hung in the tepid air. From fifteen stories high Sibusiso could almost see all of Johannesburg. He gazed at the massive city and said,
I don’t know what these dreams mean… or why I’m there with Refiloe and Paul and the other nine. But this stuff is scary. These dreams can’t come true… because if they do… then we are headed for trouble."
He hath made all things beautiful in His time.
