Compiling Principles of English - Azerbaijani Proverbial Dictionary
The main point in compiling of this English - Azerbaijani collection of proverbial entries is to arrange or include these entries in a dictionary so that a specialist or an ordinary reader can easily find the entry in a collection. With this purpose we looked through different kinds of lexicographic sources published in different times and countries earlier and as a result noticed that the attitudes of the experts are rather different in arranging of proverbial entries in dictionaries. In our case the methods and ways of arranging the entries is rather different from the opinions of the previous ones who not once applied to this traditional method in their own works. And while arranging these entries in a dictionary the compilers always come across to a number of speech elements often influencing to the correct arrangements of these entries in dictionaries. And in some lexicographic works published earlier the same entry is used with definite article in front position but in other works with indefinite at the same position and sometimes even without any article at all. What way the compiler or a lexicographer should arrange such kinds of entries with dual or more usage forms in dictionaries?! Let’s see them visually in examples "A fountain is clearest at its source;
The fountain is clearest at its source"; Fountain is clearest at its source
. AS one can see the first example begins with an indefinite article (a), the second example begins with the definite article (the) but the third one is used without any article at the beginning. So having met such kinds of varieties in one sentence with the same structure and meaning we prefer paying no attention to the articles (a, an, and the) used in front position of all the entries and arranging process must be based to the word fountain
of course. And on the other hand, the articles used in front position of these entries do not carry out any concrete grammatical or lexical function, but they serve as the auxiliary elements there, that is why, they can never influence seriously to the arranging principles of the proverbial entries of course. The concrete proof for it may serve the fact that in the third case of these examples the entry is used even without any article at the beginning. Doesn’t it mean that any kind of article used in front position of these entries can easily be avoidable at all? But in cases of having any kinds of articles (a, an, the), prepositions (to, into, out of, off, from, under), negative particles (no, nor, not), auxiliary verbs (shall; shall not/shan’t; should, should not/shouldn’t; will, will not/won’t; would, would not/wouldn’t; can, cannot/can’t, could, could not/couldn’t; may, may not, mayn’t; might, might not/mightn’t must, must not/mustn’t; is, is not/isn’t; am, am not/ amn’t; are, are not/aren’t, was not/wasn’t; were not/weren’t; ought, ought not/oughtn’t) or the others somewhere inside the entries except of their using at the beginning should preferably be taken into consideration. And together with these grammatical elements there are also some other cases too which may easily favour negatively to the arrangement of these entries in a collection. And by looking through the proverbial entries one can meet a number of entries beginning with the conjunction if
and while
, with the expression there is
and there are
, interrogative pronouns who
, when
, personal pronouns (he, it, you) coming at the beginning of the entries which always need acting accordingly in order not to confuse the reader using the collection. In all these cases, i.e. having these elements (nouns, verbs, articles, particles, prepositions, auxiliary verbs, conjunctions and the expressions) at the beginning or somewhere inside the entries we arrange them strictly according to the word or word groups coming after them only. "Give a dog a bad name and hang him (G – 10);
Give a lark to catch a kite" (G – 11); Give a man (or a fool) enough rope and he will hang himself
(G – 12); Give and spend and God will send
(G – 13); Give and take is fair play
(G – 14) such kinds of varieties may often bring the compiler to a serious confusion when including these entries in a proverbial collection. As far as these examples beginning with the verb give
; the words … a dog …
; … a lark …
; … a man …
; … and spend …
; … and take…
serve to be basic elements when including these entries in a collection. Conjunction if
is the most frequently used speech unit coming in front position of these proverbial entries. Examples, If a donkey bray at you, don’t bray at him
(I-20); If a liar accuseth thee of evil, be swift to answer
(I-21); If a man deceives you once, shame on him, if twice, shame on me
(I-22); If a thing worth doing, it’s worth doing well
(I-23); If anything can go wrong, it will
(I-24); If each would sweep before his own house door, we should have a clean city
(I-25); If every fool were crowned, the majority of the population would be kings
(I-26); If every unwise man died, there would be no one to dig a grave
(I-27). One can of course easily notice that in these examples after the conjunction if
follows the word … a donkey…
; … a liar…
; … a man…
; … a thing…
… anything…
; …each…
; … every fool…
and "… every unwise …" in the last case. And the entries used with the presence of conjunction if
in front position can be counted more than seventy pieces in this collection. The same scene can be seen with the expressions there is
and there are
used at the beginning of a number of entries too, like There is a
B in everything
(T- 55); There is a crook in the lot of everything
(T – 56); There is a friend that sticketh closer than any brother
(T – 57); There is a place for everything, and everything in its place
(T – 58); There is a remedy for all things (everything) but death
(T – 59); let’s see the entries formed with the help of the expression there are
: "There are as good fish in the sea as ever came out of it" (T – 41); There are less to every wine.
(T – 42); There are more foolish buyers than foolish sellers.
(T- 43); There are more ways of killing than by hanging.
(T – 44); There are more ways to the wood than one
(T – 45). From the examples formed with the help of there is
the order would be as … a B…
in the first example; in the second … a crook…
in the third … a friend…
in the fourth … a place…
and in the fifth … a remedy…
In the case of examples with "there are" ─ the order would be as the followings … as …
, … less …
, … more foolish …
, … more ways …
, … more ways to …
here. These examples once again show that while arranging the proverbial entries in a collection the words never depending on their being articles, particles, auxiliary verbs, expressions and the others inside the entries should compulsorily be taken into consideration of course.
In the process of systematization these proverbial entries we come across to some other cases too where the words tens of times used at the beginning of the entries which might easily create an impediment for the compilers. For example, in front position of these entries the word after
is used 8 times, all
– 41 times, bad
– 13 times; "be – 29;
best – 21;
better – 59;
cat – 7;
children – 7; the verb
come – 7;
devil – 13;
do – 17;
don’t – 36;
every – 54;
everyone – 7;
fool – 21;
fools – 19;
give – 12;
go – 15;
good – 70;
great – 17;
he – 164;
if – 77;
in – 16;
it – 88;
let – 12;
like – 11;
little – 26;
love – 23;
make – 17;
man – 31;
many – 16;
money – 17;
never – 18;
no – 38;
nothing –25;
old" – 12; abstract noun one
– 59; put
– 14; speak
– 7; take
– 12, the expression there is
– 50; there are
– 12; the cardinal number two
– 10; personal pronoun we
– 11; you
-53; questioning pronouns what
– 41; when
– 57; where
– 11; who
– 18 times.
In all these cases the correct word order of the entries should off course be based to the speech elements following those over-used words only.
In the end, it is advisable for the readers to read this explanatory note firstly, and then find out the entry in the collection which he or she is looking for.
We think this proverbial collection would be met with due interest by the readers but they might probably come across to some grammatical or orthographical mistakes or defects there too. And dear reader, please be so kind directing your offers and remarks to my e-mail address mr.a.abbasov@mail.ru any kind of your remarks or offers would of course be taken into consideration by the author in future editions, of course.
İngiliscə - Azərbaycanca atalar sözləri lüğətinin tərtibi prinsipləri
İngiliscə - Azərbaycanca atalar sözləri lüğəti
yaxud sadəcə olaraq deyimlər toplusunun tərtibi zamanı qarşıya qoyulan əsas məqsəd ondan ibarətdir ki, topludan istifadə edən mütəxəssis, yaxud adi oxucu istədiyi bir deyimi öz yerində və asanlıqla tapıb ondan yararlana bilsin. Bu məqsədlə də biz müxtəlif ölkələrdə və vaxtlarda çapdan çıxmış bir çox leksikoqrafik mənbələri nəzərdən keçirərək bu istiqamətdə fərqli yanaşmaların şahidi ola bildik. Ona görə də vəsaitin tərtibi zamanı bizim istifadə etdiyimiz metod və üsullar bizə qədərki mütəxəssislərin müraciət etdikləri metod və üsullardan bir qədər fərqli görünür. Və bu deyimləri lüğətlərə daxil edərkən hər bir mütəxəssisin tez – tez üzləşdiyi bir sıra nitq elementləri vardır ki, onlar sıralanma prosesinə ciddi şəkildə maneçilik törədə bilir. Əvvəllər çap olunmuş bir sıra leksikoqrafik səpkili əsərlərdə eyni deyimin önündə və yaxud daxilində müəyyən, ya da qeyri – müəyyən artiklın işləndiyinin ya da həmin məqamda artiklın ümumiyyətlə işlənə bilmədiyinin şahidi oluruq. Belə olduğu halda, lüğətçi bu üç variantın hansı birinə üstünlük verməlidir?! Bu xüsusda gəlin əyani olaraq misallara müraciət edək. "A fountain is clearest at its source;
The fountain is clearest at its source;
Fountain is clearest at its source".
Örnəklərdən göründüyü kimi, birinci misal qeyri–müəyyən artiklla (a), ikinci misal müəyyən artiklla (the) işləndiyi halda, üçüncü misal hətta artiklsız da işlənə bilib. Burada eyni məna və struktura malik cümlənin üç cür işlənməsi faktına əsaslanaraq qeyd etmək istərdik ki, atalar sözləri və məsəlləri sıralayarkən deyimlərin əvvəlində işlənmiş artiklları (a, an, the) nəzərə almamaq şərtilə sıralanma fountain
Lakin deyiməvvəli mövqedə işlənən artikllardan fərqli olaraq deyimortası mövqedə işlənmiş artikllar (a, an, the) sözönləri (to, into, out of, off, from, under), inkar ədatları (no, nor, not), köməkçi fellər (shall; shall not/shan’t; should, should not/shouldn’t; will, will not/won’t; would, would not/wouldn’t; can, cannot/can’t, could, could not/couldn’t; may, may not, mayn’t; might, might not/mightn’t must, must not/mustn’t; is, is not/isn’t; am, am not/ amn’t; are, are not/aren’t, was not/wasn’t; were not/weren’t; ought, ought not/oughtn’t) hökmən nəzərə alınmalıdır.
Bu sadalanan qrammatik elementlərlə bərabər digər işlək nitq vahidləri də mövcuddur ki, onlar da öz növbəsində deyimlərin sıralanması zamanı öz mənfi təsirlərini göstərə bilirlər. Və deyimlər toplusunu nəzərdən keçirməklə if
, while
, there is
, there are
ifadələri, who
, when
sual əvəzliklərilə başlayan xeyli miqdarda deyimlər vardır ki, onlar orada düzgün yerləşdirilməlidirlər ki, oxucular ondan əziyyət çəkməsinlər. Tərkibində isim, fel, artikl, sözönləri, köməkçi fellər, bağlayıcı və digər ifadələr olan deyimlərin sıralanması zamanı əsas diqqət onlardan sonra gələn sözlərə və ya söz qruplarına verilməlidir. Misallara diqqət yetirək "Give a dog a bad name and hang him (G – 10);
Give a lark to catch a kite (G – 11);
Give a man (or a fool) enough rope and he will hang himself (G – 12);
Give and spend and God will send(G – 13);
Give and take is fair play" (G – 14). Eyni sözlə başlayan bu deyimlərin sıralanması zamanı lüğətçi müəyyən səhvə yol verə bilər, ancaq burada ən dəqiq sıralanma give
felindən sonra gələn … a dog …
(misal 1); … a lark …
(misal 2); … a man …
(misal 3); … and spend …
(misal 4); və "… and take …" (misal 5) sözləri əsasında aparılmalıdır.
İngilscə - azərbaycanca atalar sözləri lüğəti
ni diqqətlə nəzərdən keçirdikdə aydın olur ki, burada if
bağlayıcısı ilə başlayan deyimlər xeyli miqdardadır. Məsələn: If a donkey bray at you, don’t bray at him
(I - 20); If a liar accuseth thee of evil, be swift to answer
(I - 21); If a man deceives you once, shame on him; if twice, shame on me
(I - 22); If a thing worth doing, it’s worth doing well
(I- 23); If anything can go wrong, it will
(I-24); If each would sweep before his own door, we should have a clean city
(I- 25); If every fool were crowned, the majority of the population would be kings
(I- 26); If every unwise man died, there would be no one to dig a grave
(I-27).
Misallardan göründüyü kimi, if
bağlayıcısından sonra gələn "… a donkey …;
… a liar …;
… a man …;
… a thing …;
… anything …;
… each …;
… every fool …" və … every unwise …
sözləri sıralanmanı təşkil edən əsas elementlərdir. Onu da qeyd etməyə deyər ki, bu topluda if
bağlayıcısı ilə başlanan deyimlərin sayı yetmişdən artıqdır. There is
və there are
ifadələrinin iştirakı ilə başlanan deyimlərə diqqət yetirək - There is a
B in everything
(T-55); There is a crook in the lot of everything
(T–56); There is a friend that sticketh closer than any brother
(T–57); There is a place for everything, and everything in its place.
(T-58); "There is a remedy for all things (every thing) but death.’’ (T-59). There are ifadəsinin iştirakı ilə düzələn misallara diqqət yetirək: "There are as good fish in the sea as ever came out of it" (T – 41); There are less to every wine.
(T – 42); There are more foolish buyers than foolish seller
(T- 43); There are more ways of killing than by hanging
(T – 44); There are more ways to the wood than one
(T – 45); Misallardan göründüyü kimi, there is
ifadəsinin iştirakı ilə düzələn deyimlərdə sözsırası … a B …
; ikinci misalda … a crook …
; üçüncü misalda … a friend …
; dördüncü misalda … a place …
; və beşinci misalda … a remedy …
sözlərinin əsasında qurulursa, there are
ifadəsinin iştirakı ilə düzələn deyimlərdə söz sırası as
; less
; more foollish
; more ways
; və more ways to
; söz və ya söz birləşmələrinin köməyilə düzəlir. Bu nümunə misallar bir daha göstərir ki, deyimləri sıralayan zaman deyimin daxilində olan söz və ya söz birləşməsinin artikl, ədat, köməkçi fel, ifadə yaxud digər nitq vahidi olmasından asılı olmayaraq onlar vacib element kimi nəzərə alınmalıdır.
Deyimlərin sistemləşdirilməsi zamanı bəzi söz və ya ifadələrin dəfələrlə təkrarlanmasına təsadüf edilir ki, bu da deyimlərin sıralanması işində mütəxəssis üçün çətinlik törədə bilir. Məsələn, sözəvvəli mövqedə after

Son olaraq düşünürük ki, topludan istifadə etmək istəyən oxucular, hər şeydən öncə, burada verilən izahatı oxumaqla istədiyi deyimi topluda tapıb istifadə edə biləcəklər.
Fikrimizcə, İngiliscə-azərbaycanca atalar sözləri lüğəti
bu sahədə ilk tədqiqat olduğundan orada müəyyən nöqsan və çatışmazlıqların olması təbiidir. Ona görə də lüğətdən istifadə zamanı qarşıya çıxan çatışmazlıqlarla bağlı iradlarınızı, rəy və təkliflərinizi müəllifə ünvanlamağınızı xahiş edirəm. Mənim e.mail ünvanım belədir: mr.a.abbasov@mail.ru
