ABOUT THE AUTHOR

DEDICATION

This book is dedicated to all of you who had faith in me. This book would never have been written without your encouragement and help.

PREFACE

Like many entrepreneurs, I struck out on my own to get control of my life. I wanted to become financially independent as a successful business owner. However, I did not know in the beginning stages how to start-up a business. I did not know whom to call or what questions to ask relating to the start-up. This book will answer many of the questions you might have about being successful in starting a business. This step-by-step guide will make the transition much easier for any first time business owner and it will serve as a reference for established business owners.

This book explains the different types of businesses to help you decide which form is best for you. It lists licenses, permits and regulations required by type of business and state. It emphasizes the importance of preparing a business plan. It stresses that the business plan is the blueprint for the business. Certain areas have been highlighted that the entrepreneur should concentrate on to properly manage their finances. Contrary to what most people believe, there is money available to help start up your business. Once you receive the money, you should know how to prepare a budget and how to manage your cash flow in order to make the most of the funds available to you.

My training and experience in management helped me to utilize my resources to the maximum potential. My experience in research was helpful in finding the resources that were needed to get this job done. I also asked for help and received it from several people and organizations. I turned to the Small Business Administration (SBA), my banker, lawyer and accountant. My friends and family members were also called on constantly for help. I joined professional organizations, attended trade shows and attended seminars on business at the local colleges to gain more knowledge in this area.

The success of a business is derived from sticking with it, planning, working hard, managing your time, knowing where to go and whom to ask for help, meeting your deadlines, offering quality work, exhibiting high performance and more.

Chapter 1

GETTING STARTED

Business Start-up

Many people are beginning to start and operate their own businesses to help them as the unemployment rate increases and to prepare them for the future. During an informal survey, some of the reasons given as to why people start a business are to increase their income, get more control over their time, tax advantages, job security, service to the community, enjoyment of working with people, self-responsibility, self-reliance, success and the flexibility to make changes.

Getting a business started for some people could mean just writing down on a piece of paper what needs to be done to get them from point A to point B. For others, they might need to know what kind of research needs to be performed to find the answer to many questions. To get clarifications on what your needs are, you might want to consider reading books, talking to people or just analyzing the data already available to you.

The most important thing is to just do it. Getting started could mean gathering information, reading, analyzing or putting it to use. Most importantly, the potential business owner should start now.

After you get started, there are steps you should take to get yourself organized; such as setting aside time to do daily readings. These readings will include articles, brochures, mail and other information pertaining to the type of business you plan to start. Remember, information is knowledge, and the more knowledge you have about the subject, the wiser it makes you. Being well-informed will make things a little bit easier for you during the decision-making process.

In preparation for a successful business start-up, contact your local community college for a schedule of seminars and courses dealing with business start-up. You may also contact the Small Business Administration and the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) for free business counseling and advice on how to start up the business. They will discuss the product or service that you plan to provide the community and help you determine whether there is a need for it.

SCORE counseling is available by appointment. You may contact the SBA at the address listed below to make an appointment in your area with SCORE:
