But how shall we expect charity towards others, when we are uncharitable to ourselves? Charity begins at home, is the voice of the world.

    1   Lifesaving

I n one format or another, the following parable merits frequent consider ation.

A religious man stood on the roof of his house during a terrible flood. He prayed to the Lord for salvation. The waters were rising. Soon they would reach the roof of the house where he stood.

Spare me, Lord, he pleaded fervently. I have been a righteous man, and will continue to serve You well.

Soon a speedboat came by the roof. Get in, shouted the captain of the speedboat.

But the righteous man responded loudly, Save my neighbors on the roof of that house over there. The Lord will save me.

The waters were still slowly rising. Now the righteous man’s feet were covered with a layer of water.

Shortly, another vessel approached. Get aboard, the skipper commanded.

No. Rescue that family over there, the righteous man responded. The Lord will save me.

Now the floodwaters rose over the shoulders of the righteous man. As he struggled, he spotted yet another family on a distant rooftop. They were about to succumb to the flood. When the next rescue vessel arrived, the righteous man directed that vessel to save them. The Lord will save me, he said.

Finally, the floodwaters engulfed the righteous man, and he was taken to his eternal reward.

The spirit of the righteous man was awarded an audience with the Lord. I was righteous and faithful my entire life. How could You let me perish in the flood?

The Lord responded, Who let you drown? I sent three boats to rescue you!

B efore embarking on this voyage to elucidate medical issues pertinent to your health and welfare, you might wish to know a brief background of your cruise dir ector.

My childhood was punctuated by multiple lifesaving rescues administered by a family doctor who made in-home visits (house calls) to administer treatment for acute asthmatic crises.

Refusing to be hostage to severe allergic asthma, I was very active in athletic activities with friends. Overexertion and outdoor allergies were effective triggers for asthmatic crises. I had to overcome my memories of frantic gasping for air many years later when I obtained certification for scuba diving.

Despite my gratitude for the emergency medical care that enabled me to get through childhood, my precollege ambitions were preparatory for a career as a trial lawyer.

My parents were short in stature. My classmates were taller than I, and they had a
