In loving memory of my mother, Adunni Victoria Balogun. You were the true depiction of the Proverbs 31 woman—virtuous and victorious.

In loving memory of my father, Samuel Idowu Balogun. You were a hero till the end. I never found that manuscript of yours; but here’s a book for you, Daddy.

In loving memory of my sister, Temitope ‘Gwendolyn’ Balogun. I always knew you were an angel.

In loving memory of my brother, Olumide ‘Keith’ Balogun. You were larger than life, and you touched everyone in a special way. You are unforgettable.

In loving memory of a dear friend, Onyioza David-West. You did not live long, but you sure lived well. It was an honour being your friend.

To Pastor Bimbo Odukoya, a saint gone by. You touched a generation of women you never knew.

To all, even in death, who give hope to the living and whose testimonies speak for eternity.

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

When I look back over my life and think of how far I have come, it must have been God who brought me here; I owe it to no man.

So first, I would like to thank my Heavenly Father: the Master Planner, the great and awesome Wonder who is so strong and yet so gentle. You have been better to me than I have been to myself.

To my saviour, hero, big brother and dearest friend, Jesus Christ. I love you.

To the Holy Spirit—my helper, best companion, counsellor and comforter. I acknowledge and recognize that without You, this project would have taken me out. You make mountains look like molehills, and the most daunting tasks unbelievably stress free.

To the angelic host—ministers of the Most High, messengers of God—who do His bidding, I would like to salute and applaud the team assigned to this case. Godspeed, guys. Good job!

To my late father and mother, I miss you every day. I couldn’t have wished for better parents.

To my late sister and brother, Tope and Olumide. We were the three musketeers; but I guess I’m ‘007’ now. Miss you sorely, but I know we will meet again in Gloryland.

To my sisters, Mojisola, Yewande, Ololade, Tomilola; and brothers, Olanrewaju, Babajide and Olufemi. Thanks for being there for me. I love you all. You are the best siblings in the world. We are unstoppable in Christ. Go! Go! Go!

To my Delta prince, my Boaz, my darling Husband, my ‘Benjamin Best’. Thank you for being a voice of love and encouragement. You have been a perfect partner through it all. I am grateful to God for blessing me with the Best.

And to our son, my super-smart prince (Chubby-Choo). You light up my world. I love you both.

To my creative critiques: Pastor Yemi Amusan, Pastor Kola Oladunmoye, and my editors Angela Osa, Jibola Dahunsi. Thank you for your time and contributions to this project. Friendship is a miracle. I did not know just how true it was till our paths crossed. Thank you so much, and God bless.

To my Papa and Mama, Pastors Paul and Ifeanyi Adefarasin. You have inspired me to dream, encouraged me to keep the dream alive, and empowered me to work out the dream and make it a reality.

You have cared for and covered me in many ways, and I cannot possibly repay you in a hundred lifetimes. I love you.

To the many voices of victory who dared to share their testimonies. From the ashes we rose.

And together, we declare that the Lord is faithful!

    FOREWORD

We all—man, woman, rich, poor, weak, strong—live lives punctuated by unsettling events; events that leave us with teary eyes and bruised spirits. As long as we keep on living, we are all bound to, at certain points in our journey, hit a bump on the road.

King Solomon opens the third chapter of the book of Ecclesiastes with these wise words:

‘To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven’.

A classic collector’s item, And the Storm Came is one book that should be on every bookshelf because, sooner or later, a close or distant loved one will find it relevant and comforting.

This is by no means some descriptive prose by a talented writer. It is the heartfelt narration of a young lady’s experience who, in spite of the tragic seasons of her life, held on to her faith while offering up true worship.

I have had the opportunity of not just seeing Kikelomo go through life’s storms, but as her spiritual father, also seen her grow in the grace and glory of God. As you flip through the pages, the sovereignty of God over our lives will become a fresh reality.

You may be going through a rough and trying season or grieving over a loss. Whichever the case, you will be encouraged to trust God again. The amazing testimonies of these great men and women will undoubtedly inspire, bless and cause you to steady your feet and fix your gaze on Jesus whatever the season. He is Lord over the worst of storms, and He abides faithful.

As you read on, may this be your testimony, ‘And the storm came, but I overcame!’

    Enjoy.

    PROLOGUE

‘Often times we get so preoccupied with what we went through, that we fail to realize we actually did make it through’ T. D. Jakes

It was a beautiful evening. Sitting somewhere in the third pew at The Potter’s House in Dallas, Texas. I listened with my heart as Bishop T. D. Jakes spoke these timely words. Though spoken in a whisper, they thudded heavily in my spirit. Hot tears glazed my eyes and discreetly snuck out as if trying not to disrupt the hushed atmosphere by its watery exit. In a hall packed with over ten thousand parishioners, you could hear a pin drop.

They were tears of repentance, because I sometimes found myself whining about all I had been through in life. Thereafter, tears of real joy began flowing in celebration of victories won. There would have been no victories if no battles were fought. My pain had turned to praise, and my tests had been transformed to testimonies. I had much to be thankful for; my storm was God’s way of giving me a story.

Right there, God’s love and relentless grace enveloped me.

    Thank you Father . . . .’, I heard my soul say.

Thank you Father, I am grateful’.

The God we serve is Alpha and Omega; the author of yesterday’s past and the finisher of tomorrow’s future. When I look back over my life, I must admit, the road has not been an easy, smooth walk; and neither has it always been level ground. It’s been by His grace.

And you, my dear reader, have come a long way. Your feet may be sore, and you may have had to journey from a mighty long distance to get here. You may have traversed dusty paths in a sun-scorched desert, or gone through storms or a tsunami life blew your way. The devil’s intention was to totally annihilate you, but look, you are still here! You are a survivor and are going down in history as one more proof of just how great our God is.

    You are a miracle!

    MY STORY

    1.jpg

    Face to Face…

Dedicated to friends and family who now see him face to face

I call Him holy for that’s who the Bible reveals

You call Him holy for that’s who you now see

I fall prostrate before the invisible One who sits enthroned

You worship the King before whom you now stand

I kneel in adoration and imagine kissing His feet

You bow with the four and twenty as you truly kiss His feet

I sing songs to a God I believe is

You sing songs of the God you now see face to face

I hear of a glorious place, of gold dust and pearly waters

    You live in this place

You walk the streets and drink of its rivers

I read in my Bible, No more pain, no more tears,

    no more sickness’

You now experience this as you dance and sway

Skipping about, your face lit with His glory

For now you have laid aside this dusty shell

And with immortality are now clad

For now you join the cloud of witnesses

And with the Triumphant are now glad

Though we sigh as you exit

    Saying, ‘Good night’

    Heaven proclaims as you enter

    Shouting, ‘Good morning!’

    CHAPTER ONE

    THE STORM

‘A voice is heard in Ramah,

    mourning and great weeping,

    Rachel weeping for her children

    and refusing to be comforted,

because her children are no more’.

Harder, faster, faster still, every muscle responding in sync with strides of this sprint. The road was long and curvy. It was a dark, chilly night. Cars sped past.
