    CHAPTER 1

    A Date for the Dance

H otel, Diane was another available young lady in the community, the boys had forgotten her the other day when they were talking about young ladies, she was a little taller, but very shapely, she will be at the dance.

Yes please, for both of us, the Judge answered.

Joey and I were just talking about this shindig Saturday and all that fun the young man and young ladies are going to have dancing, the Judge said, as he nodded his head at the waitress.

Yes sir, Your Honor, we haven’t overlooked her, Mark said.

She had come into our eyes as soon as we came into the hotel, Claude said.

Having grown up with her she’s well, like part of our family, Lance said

So as not to have a fight, I asked her if she would be at the dance, Matt said.

Well, that’s good thanking Marshall keep these three young man out of trouble, but what would Amber say, The Judge asked?

I asked if she’s knew about and was she going to be at the dance; I didn’t ask her out, Matt said.

That’s good, wouldn’t want you to have knots all over your head, The Judge said.

Diane came back out with their tea, she was smiling, Which one of three single men is going to be my date Saturday night and take me to the dance? Diane asks.

It’ll have to be me are Lance, Claude said Cause Mark’s going to ask Anna Marie.

Why I’d be very happy to take you to the dance Diane, Lance said, That is if Claude doesn’t mind.

That would be all right; I have thought to ask another young lady to go I may have to ride to her house in the morning and ask her to come to the dance with me, Claude said.

Oh who might that be, Diane ask?

Becky Allen, we seen her the other day when we took one of their calve home, Claude said.

See was in town a while back I saw her at Sanders store, she’s very pretty, Diane said.

Sounds like a couple ramrod’s better talk to a couple young ladies, before they go to the dance along, the Judge said.

Yes. You two take his advice and don’t be like a certain sheriff was for a long time and miss out on a very good part of life, had I realized the deep love Amber had for me I’d of married a long time ago, Matt said.

That sounds like good advice, I know, when me and my Mrs. got married. Why life, just began, The Judge said, There is a whole new life opens up for young men, there is give and take and sharing; oh, to be young like you boys are again.

How sweet it is, Matt said.

Mark, Claude, and you to Lance for that madder when you fine true love, there’s no other feeling like it on earth and I’m told if that union is broken by something other then death it like losing a part of your body, Judge Thacker said. So before you become old men find a wife you to young lady, two are better then one that you’ll find in Proverbs not my words," he advised.

Yes your honor, Diane said, Lance you heard the judge, when are you going to ask?

Well shouldn’t we have one date first, Lance asks?

I don’t know after the judge’s speech I’m all ready to start that sharing, Diane said.

It does spark the interest, but you should be sure I’m the one, Lance said.

We will know Saturday night, Diane said.

I guess we will, Lance said.

Well, before I get fired I better tell you all what’s on the menu, Diane said We have cured ham, mashed potatoes and green beans. She continued.

The judge looked at Joey, who nodded his head; We’ll both have the special, the Judge said, Sounds good.

Yes it’ll do thank you, Joey said.

Your Honor now that we’ve answered your questions still thanking ten years, Matt asked?

Yes, I think its adequate can’t just let them go after two years or a year and a half of stealing, the Judge said.

There could be a little trouble; my deputies, said one of the prisoners sent out a letter to his rather large family, in Missouri with a different verdict, Matt said.

Now that could be bad or that could be all right depends on what part of Missouri there from, the Judge Said.

I believe the name of the town is Jonesville and its in South Central Missouri, Matt said.

Feuding hillbilly country, that may be trouble for you Matt, in the near future, you will want to keep that in mind, you may have an attempted jailbreak, the Judge advised.

Yeah, we have a new letter, policy at the jailhouse now; the deputies understand the why now, Matt said, Zeke’s family is misinformed and there is no way to change that.

Yes, unfortunately that’s true that sometimes comes with the job, Judge Thacker said.

Diane brought their food out and they begin to eat the judge noticed a bigger smile on Diane face one that lighted up to her eyes as well. Young love, he looked at Lance who was for the most part, sober and serious type of person who was now smiling and looking at Diane wasn’t any telling what was going through his mind but the judge could imagine; after all, he was young once.

Matt noticed a smile on Diane face also, and the change in his deputy what a woman will do to a man or the thought of making love to a woman; it changes your whole outlook of things.

Lance had eaten here many times but had not had any thoughts, well he had thought about Diane, but never marriage, now that was a possibility and he liked it he hoped she did to.

Mark and Claude also noticed the change in Lance and Diane, how they had brightened up the smile on their faces and how they kept stealing glances at each other somewhat like a couple school kids’ not wanting the other to see.

Think I’m going to have to go over to Sanders store, Mark said.

Maybe ask the young lady to the dance, Matt asked?

Yeah think it’s what I’ll do, I’ve put it off and put it off afraid she’d say no, but if I don’t ask, I will never know, Mark said.

I know what you mean, Claude said, The hay crew is going to have to do with out me tomorrow morning I’m going to the Allen ranch and asks Becky Allen to the dance.

I think William and Sally started and epidemic, Joey said.

Do you think the love bug is spreading here in Cedar Creek Joey, The Judge asked?

Starting to have that look about it, Joey said.

I had seen that on a couple of peoples faces here, just a few minutes ago, the Judge stated.

Some diseases spread rather quickly I’m told, Matt said.

I’ve seen it happen in other towns as I’ve traveled from various places as a judge and it doesn’t matter the town, the look is always the same fortunately it’s not deadly or painful, the Judge said.

I understand that doctors don’t have a cure for it people have to live with it for the rest of their lives in most cases or nearly the rest of their lives, Matt said.

Yes that’s true in most cases, occasionally the bug dies and the look fades; then it is a tragedy, the Judge said.

Hope that doesn’t occur around here to anyone, Joey said.

I will second that and add, long live the bug, Mark said.

I agree with that, Lance said.

Mark got up and paid for his lunch went out the door heading to Sanders store, hoping that Anna Marie would say yes, He didn’t know, sometimes he’d been arrogant around town and she may say no; The last couple weeks had changed him from a rich rancher’s son, who was arrogant to a responsible and caring young man, part of it was the death of Claude Jameson, and being accused of it is quite sobering but, all he can do is ask her.

When he walked in the door he had his hat off and in his hand, the only person he saw in the store was Mrs. Sanders, she heard the door open and turned and saw Mark coming through the door, she smiled, noticing the hat in his hand, she bet she knew what was on his mind.

Hello Mark, how are you today and what can I help you with, Anna asks?

Well, I was wondering if I could speak to Anna Marie, Mark asked?

Why yes I’ll go get her for you, Anna said.

She disappeared through the door toward their living quarters and what seems like forever but, was only a couple minutes, she reappeared with Anna Marie, who Mark noticed right away was smiling; he thought that’s a good sign or at least, he hoped
