About The Author
Hear the word of the Lord, O children of Israel,
for the Lord has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land.
There is no faithfulness or steadfast love,
and no knowledge of God in the land . . .
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.
Hosea 4:1, 4:6
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I want to give a special thank-you to all the members at the Lighthouse SDA Church in St. Louis, Missouri. In some way, they all have helped me in my spiritual journey which, by God’s grace, assisted in the production of my writing.
Thank you to Pastor Joseph T. Ikner III for his examples of making prayer practical for everyone to grasp.
Also, I benefited a great deal because of the guidance, training, and support of my uncle Kenneth Williams, Lenore Harris, Jacci Davis, Professor Anne Willey, and my best friend, Shaleya Anderson. The experiences they shared led to the Holy Spirit grabbing hold of me, leading me to God’s saving grace. That is when I realized that no matter how far we get ourselves lost in our web of confusion, Jesus paves a path so that we may find our way back to God. God is ever waiting for our hearts to turn to him that we may live abundantly under his umbrella of grace. Wherever we are, God sees us. Whatever we experience, God is with us. However we need him, he hears us.
And for that I say thank you, Lord and Savior, my all in all.
PROLOGUE
Back in the year 1999, my life was simple, unexciting, and frivolous. Purpose really had no meaning to me because things weren’t what they appeared. Purpose indicated that my adult life would depend on every decision I made from that moment. I began high school that year, and as far as every freshman was concerned, adulthood was ages away.
This is a hindsight observation because—my mistake—I didn’t take much of anything seriously. School, friendships, even church: none of them had a real purpose, it seemed to me, because they didn’t have the direct consequences that adults foretold.
For example, I didn’t value relationships as I should have. I had no true connection with anyone. The goal of education should always be to improve and rise higher. My focus, because of my lack of purpose, was just to keep up so that I wasn’t left behind. As for church, my understanding was blunt. Go to church, get to heaven; don’t attend church, and you’ve reserved a one-way ticket to hell.
Fear and respect, so I thought. The picture wasn’t only brighter but also an offshoot of what I understood. For a portion of my teen life, I only tolerated attending church services. I mainly didn’t care to know much about religion. My attitude clearly showcased my belief that the rules about the proper way of Christian living didn’t apply to me.
Sadly, that frame of mind continued for the next ten years. Then, as God would have it, a monumental catastrophe occurred that exposed the lack of knowledge that had led me to error in just about every area.
This event occurred in 2009; it was the breakup of a companionship that had begun nearly three years earlier. Breakups, in a way, are like women. One only understands them in hindsight. So, as time advanced, I received clearer insight into and a broader perspective on why it was necessary for that relationship to collapse.
One thing I realized is that God never intends for two individuals to separate. But once the two cross forbidden boundaries and misrepresent the true image that should be in them, the only way is to get away. Forever? Only God knows.
I won’t give time the credit for getting me beyond the devastation, however. What occupied my schedule during the next few years is undoubtedly worthy of all the praise. The magnitude of what I learned in just one year after my own personal D-day was greater than what I had learned over the previous ten years.
Complex discussions, behaviors, feelings, and thoughts all had rays of light reflecting on them, so much so that darkness impersonated light. Jesus mentioned something like this in Matthew 6:22–23, which meant for me that I wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed.
Nevertheless, during that year and time apart, I realized that God had used that tragedy to liberate me from the blindness that my mind was engrossed in. Here I was, a veteran church attendee in the eyes of some, taking baby steps toward learning that there is more purpose in God’s plan than the decisions I made seamlessly every day.
Since that faithful D-day, each point of my life has been centered on one purpose. Collectively, it all makes perfect sense.
What I experienced through my age of darkness was no different from what I witnessed in the church soon after my deliverance. God’s
