Trusting Relationship: How to Live in Intimacy with Jesus, Revised Edition
Author

Joseph Gillespie

JOSEPH GILLESPIE was called to missions in Brazil in 1986. Since that time, he has been preparing for the work there. The Lord has been the one preparing him for ministry there, and the lessons in this book are part of the preparation. The preparations of the heart for any kind of service involve having an intimate relationship with Jesus. This book is intended to stir up a hunger for this more intimate relationship. After receiving Jesus in 1976, he received from the Lord a sense of calling that became more defined and eventually moved to training. This training has continued until today. He currently lives in Huntsville, Alabama, and is the missions coordinator at Restoration Foursquare Church in Madison, Alabama. In the near future, he and his wife Cristina plan to move to Brazil.

    Foreword

Having grown up in a loving, safe family environment I understand how important trusting relationships can be. As a pastor I often encounter people whose upbringing was void of the loving relationships that I can so easily take for granted. Our churches are filled with people who have been abused, neglected, and bruised in so many ways; so helping them understand the love of our Heavenly Father is of utmost importance.

Joseph Gillespie’s approach to understanding and developing trusting relationships hit the nail on the head, and his use of the scriptures to convey the benefits of trusting God will enable many to grow in God’s loving grace. People who grew up without a healthy father figure in their life can find it difficult to understand and accept the love of God, so God chooses to use people like Joseph to bridge that gap of separation.

God is love and love means being relational. Jesus, the I Am came in the flesh to restore man back to God and that process of restoration is an ongoing one. The more we grow in Christ the more we realize the need to grow. The stronger our relationship with Him becomes, the more we hunger to know Him more. As you read through and work through the materials in this book, allow God to take you on a special journey with Him, a journey whose destination is glorious and whose pathways are satisfying.

Trusting Relationship will help you come to know God better as you develop a deeper relationship with Him, and help you to know the Jesus of the Old Testament as well as the New. It will also help to define what it means to be content in Christ as you allow the Holy Spirit to guide you on this journey. God has given us His Word and His Spirit to help us live a victorious life, and Joseph has given us his insights as to how to best accomplish that.

So enjoy the journey you are about to embark on as you read and work through the pages that follow with an expectation and excitement that God is waiting to meet with you as you go.

May the Lord bless you as you read Trusting Relationship, and may you become a vessel He can use to help others trust Him more deeply.

    Trust and Lordship

In this walk with the Lord, we are growing in a trusting relationship. And to do so is to have a continuing revelation of Christ Jesus. The first step in this relationship is salvation. This is always the central part because the sacrifice of Jesus was necessary if there was to be any relationship at all. Once the revelation of our need for a Savior has been understood and acted upon, the Lord begins to reveal Himself to us in other ways. He does not necessarily reveal Himself to a person first as Savior, but any revelations of Himself to a person before they receive Him are intended to lead the person to that revelation of Jesus as Savior. Once this revelation has come, there will be many others, if a person is open to them. And the more open a person is to Jesus in growing intimacy, the more quickly those revelations can come. Can there be any greater pursuit in life than to know the Lord Jesus, and to continue knowing Him more intimately?

So, early in the growth process of someone who has already come to know Jesus as Savior, is to also know Him as Lord. In numerous places in scripture, Jesus is referred to as Lord. If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.¹ So the Lordship of Jesus is an important part of this relationship. We realize He rules. We realize He rules the universe. We realize He is in control. But somewhere along the way, we are led to ask a new question: Does He also rule in me? I know He rules the universe, but does He also rule in my heart, in my mind, in my decision-making? Does He rule over my will? In the garden, Jesus struggled with the events He knew were coming. And He had to determine within Himself that the Father’s will and purpose for Him were more important than His will to live.² So we can see that inherent in the revelation of Jesus as Lord is the realization that we must surrender to Him to allow Him to have His way in us.

There are many aspects to Lordship, but it comes down to a very simple issue: Who is in control internally?
