About this ebook

This little book has been compiled from many years of writing poems (verse): about sixty on reflection, and I have split it into sections because I want it to be mainly fun for readers who can choose their own interests. I have always tried to avoid obscurity or difficult phrasing so that although I call it a book of poems I am well aware that for the most part it is not a book of poetry (far be it from me to make such a claim) but a book of verse, limericks, doggerel and prose. Just so long as it brings a smile or a memory.

Ralph Hill

Ralph Hill's life took him from a North London Council estate, around the world with the Royal Navy during the Second World War and into a long career as a teacher. With an enquiring mind and a philosophical bent, he turned many of his experiences and reflections on life into short stories, several of which have an underlying moral theme.

Presentation in 1906 by Society of Poets in USA

    Appreciation

My sincere thanks to those who have encouraged me in writing this book including Poetry Com in America, friends in New England, and the many people who, unknown to them at the time, provided me with much material and to Clair Cox and Steve Trice who finally persuaded me to stop stalling and to put pen to paper. To all of them I hope they think it was worth it. If nothing else it has given me much joy in the recall of so many happy moments.

I must also thank April Ross of Author House in Indiana who put up with my numerous changes of mind about content and editing. Working at a distance of some thousands of miles and totally different time zones presented its own problems together with my deafness which made telephonic discussions impossible. April coped magnificently.

    DEDICATION

I dedicate this book to SALLY HANLEY in the US who persuaded me to write the Limerick section. Her sense of the absurd is totally delightful and her constant supply of unused American postage stamps kept me on the ball.
