The monster was waiting. Deep down in the murky brown sludge it grumbled hungrily. It raised its round head, then slumped back down with a sound a bit like gloop.

It was growing restless. Drawing on its strength, it gathered itself to its full height and leapt into the air.

    ‘It’s gonna eat me!’

    Mummy was laying the table.

‘It’s not going to eat you Jaybee, it’s just bubbling because it’s nice and hot.’

    Jaybee was not convinced.

    ‘It’s evil.’

‘The casserole is not evil,’ Mummy said patiently.

    ‘It’s plotting,’ Jaybee insisted.

Mummy was looking around the kitchen as though she had lost something. It was in the laundry.

‘Squib, get out of the cat’s box!’

‘I’m Mr Socks!’ Squib announced joyfully.

Eventually everyone was sitting at the table. Mummy put a bib on Squib while Jaybee eyed the casserole warily.

‘Mmm, yummy casserole,’ Mummy said as she scooped food onto plates for her girls. ‘Eat up.’

Jaybee folded her arms in protest.
