A Body On The Beach - Agnes Ruiz

    Chapter 1

The land was still desolate while the dawn was breaking. A fierce storm was coming to sweep off the coast, scraping debris off the sand but calming down softly. Wilfried Côté and William, his father, always seized the moments looking for unusual objects. For Willem Côté, the grandpa, driftwood or any other things are worth learning about.

The old man was crippled for 10 years. He killed time by working on those wood he picked from the bank. And he had the gift for that. Most of his neighbors can testify that. Only a handful of refractory woods got him into trouble, probably because of old and unforgettable hatreds, justified or not.

His son and grandson made a point of procuring materials necessary to craft his masterpieces. Almost nothing could distract the old man. He hated watching TV all day long. Reading? This wasn’t to his taste!

I think something is over there, yelled Wilfried, who was so excited to see a pile of driftwoods abandoned there.

He rushed forward with his rubber knee boots he used to wear. He could’ve marched boldly in the wet place, but he stopped sharply. He shouted to his father that something wasn’t going well.

What’s going on out there? You found a body or what?

The joke fell flat. William knew the truth once his son turned towards him.

    Chapter 2

Detective Rachel Toury parked her car along the sidewalk in a coastal village. She kept asking herself what she was going to do there far away from Montreal. Her captain was known to be intractable. This time he became more difficult to deal with.

She had discussed the case in the car with her colleague Jean-François Millet, the investigator. Obviously, that wasn’t the case.

I’m sure that the boss wanted to hear from us anywhere but in his paw, said Jeff, grudging the fact that they must spend 2 hours in coming
