About this ebook
Carl loves his wife, even if he only sees her occasionally because they both live in the shadows. When she comes to town, and has a job for him, it feels like a setup.
Would his own wife burn him and Deke? Worse, if she has been turned by somebody, can he and his partner escape?
And how do they get even with whoever is manipulating them all from the shadows?

Unintended Consequences
The hotel room smelled like sex. It had been so long since he had seen his wife that Carl had almost forgotten what she smelled like.
The room was warm, musky, and sweaty, but with a sickly-sweet taste underneath. The sweetness kind of reminded Carl of the bottles of antifreeze his dad kept around for the antique 2004 Mercedes the old man refused to sell or upgrade to automated systems. Completely illegal to drive on most roads, these days, but Pop would never part with his baby. Planned to be buried in it. Carl figured that other smell must be the industrial disinfectant the hotel staff used to keep the place safe from all the viruses running loose in the modern world. He preferred electronic sorts of plagues, but wasn’t going to argue today.
His wife came through Seattle so infrequently that any chance to see her was something he leapt at. Even if it was a run-down hotel in one of the seedier parts of the Sodo neighborhood of Seattle, with barely two hours’ warning that she was even in town. Fortunately, he and Deke weren’t up to anything criminal right now, so taking the night off didn’t ruin any operational plans.
Carl rolled from his back to his side as his heart rate finally slowed down to something he thought might be survivable. She had been almost frantic in her love-making, like she hadn’t seen him in years, instead of months, or maybe thought she might never see him again.
He considered pulling up a sheet or something, but it was warm enough in here. And there was just enough light sneaking through the crappy curtains to just lay there and study her form.
Tall and luscious. Tanned with no lines visible. Chest large but still firm. The woman was a maniac about staying in shape, frequently working out in a t-shirt that simply said more pushups = better boobs.
Carl had to agree. They were fantastic. And distracting. Alma knew that. Used it to her advantage every way she could. Carl didn’t mind being on the receiving end.
After all, as one of her husbands, he could never be compelled to testify against her in an American court.
What evil thoughts are racing through your head, youngster?
she purred, stretching and twisting in ways that made Carl’s brain turn to white noise for a second.
Youngster was an inside joke. Alma was exactly eight days older than Carl, both of them less than a year from turning forty.
Her hair was blonde. Probably reinforced now, since he had met her mother a few times and seen the astonishingly-beautiful, gray-haired woman that Alma would turn into in another decade. The eyes were
