About this ebook

This booklet has been compiled because of my interest in promoting road safety. It started back in 1985 with Advanced Driving, and then in 1991 I took the opportunity to train as a Driving Instructor. I have since retired after teaching for some 12 years.
There have been many changes in driver tuition since I started. One of them has been the introduction of the Theory Test. Now it is necessary to pass the Theory Test before applying for the Practical Test. This Theory Test is in two parts. Firstly a Multiple Choice Question Paper, then a Hazard Perception Video Exam. Both together make up one Theory Test. This booklet is to assist with the first part, or multiple.
Many of my friends in the industry tell their clients to buy books containing the questions. Only then if theres a problem are they invited to come back and ask any questions on what ever queries they came across. Most times this works, but not always.
So starting only as a hobby, I analysed each and every theory question, and wrote hundreds of notes. These became very extensive, so I then put them in some sort of order that non-drivers could understand. This hobby then turned into a project which Ive put into print. It covers all the multiple choice questions in your exam.
Every piece of information in this booklet is what the Driving Standard Agency requires you to know, not just what a Driving Instructor wants you too. You now have it, and its all facts. Im sure you will enjoy it.

Welcome to the THEORY course for drivers.

The contents of this book will help anyone pass the multiple choice question paper from the DSA. It contains every piece of information that you will need to know when sitting the exam.

It will also help anyone from abroad who wishes to come and stay in the UK for a long time. As they too will need to take our exam if they wish to continue driving after any lengthy time.

It covers the current exam as well as the 2012 test.

This book has been designed to give you an insight into what you will be expected to know, so you can not only take, but pass the Theory Test Multiple Choice Question Paper. There are a number of topics covering a variety of subjects, (14 Topics). I see no need to list them because we will be covering all of them anyway. I know before you finish you will be able to answer any written question from the DSA. When you’ve passed the Theory Test, the certificate is valid for 2 years.

Now, it’s important to remember that you will be driving a potentially lethal weapon that weighs something like of a tonne. If it’s not kept under full control, it can cause death and destruction more horrifically that a gun! Always look over your shoulder before moving off as a final check in case there maybe hidden dangers not shown in your mirrors, (Blind Spot).

For better control of the pedals, wear suitable footwear. If front head restraints are fitted to your vehicle they must be used and properly adjusted to reduce neck injuries in collisions.

To drive your vehicle on the public roads you must have at least a provisional licence for the category of vehicle you intend to drive, and it must be signed by you. It must also have insurance of at least Third Party which will cover any damage or injury to other persons or property caused by your vehicle. A temporary Insurance Certificate (Cover Note) will be issued often prior to the actual Insurance Certificate arriving. This will be sufficient. If you drive or ride without insurance then this is a serious offence and can incur penalty points as well as a fine up to £5000. Before driving someone else’s vehicle, check that it’s insured for you to drive. You will need to display a current Excise Duty or Tax Disc in the left-hand side of the front windscreen at the bottom where it should be easily seen from the kerb. If the vehicle is over 3 years old, it also requires an MOT or Test Certificate. This will normally be valid for 1 year after the date it is issued. Without an MOT, the vehicle must not be driven on the road except to a pre-arranged appointment at a Testing Station, and must be insured, otherwise, no MOT means any insurance will be invalidated. You will not be able to TAX the vehicle if you don’t have insurance and the MOT will be required as well. Small trailers and caravans don’t require MOT certificates but you must ensure they are in good order when used on the highway. The lights, tyres, indicators and wheel nuts need checking regularly.

It’s the registered keeper of any vehicles responsibility to ensure that the Vehicle Registration Certificate (V5C) is kept up to date. Should you need to keep your vehicle off road for any length of time you must notify the DVLA by sending a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) form. This will allow you to remain the registered keeper for the vehicle without needing to TAX it but you will only last for 1 year. If further time is required you will need to send another form.

Insurance companies apply excess on policies. This means if you make a claim, then you will have to pay the first specified amount such as £100 before they step in with the rest. These costs may often reduce if you complete the Pass Plus Scheme . This scheme has been created for new drivers with the main purpose to improve their basic skills and widen their driving experience. You can decrease the risk of having an accident just after passing your test by taking further training like a Motorway lesson or any refresher subject that concerns you.

When you become 25 years of age, insurance costs usually reduce as it does with years of experience by No Claims Bonuses. They will still levy an Excess on policies though, which you must pay on any claim you need to make.

If you only hold a provisional licence, you will not be able to drive without Learner Plates (L Plates) and definitely not allowed to drive on motorways. You also must have someone sitting beside you if it’s a car. That person needs to be at least 21 years old and have held a full licence for 3 years. Other types of vehicles disallowed on motorways include; farm tractors, horse riders, cyclists, pedestrians, light weight invalid carriages under 254kg, motorcycles under 50cc and certain slow-moving vehicles without permission.

You have a duty to inform the licensing authority when changes are made in your circumstances such as when you change your vehicle, your name or if you change your permanent address. They must also be told if your health affects your driving or if your eyesight no longer meets the set standard.
