About this ebook

Superstition is a way of life for many people in the mountain communities of northwestern North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. When superstition is blended with Christianity, a hybrid faith emerges that leaves the worshipper without a steady footing for the problems of life. Hybrid Christianity is not only a part of mountain communities; it is also a way of life for many Christians in areas where superstition may not be as noticeable.

This book seeks to help you work through your faith in order to burn the things in life that prevent you from walking victoriously with Jesus Christ. Through the personal testimony of Lonnie Denney, you will be able to relate to the struggles and victory that every Christian faces in the modern world. For anyone who has ever questioned their own faith, and especially for those who seek to grow closer and more intimate with the Lord Jesus Christ.

    FOREWORD

Pastor Lonnie Denney has revealed in this book that superstition and the occult are still a way of life in the mountains of North Carolina and East Tennessee. His book has not been written through interviews and endless research. Denney writes from firsthand experience. He reveals the deception of practicing a religion based on superstition.

As the church continues to attack the gates of hell, there is still much work to be done in bringing the light of God’s Word to a sin-darkened world. A dear pastor friend of mine once said, The world has become so churchy and the church has become so worldly, one cannot tell the difference. Not much has changed since Paul the apostle preached to the superstitious believers at Galatia and Colossae. Paul revealed to them they had been bewitched away from the truth of God through superstition and the occult.

There is no doubt that God’s hand is upon Pastor Denney in his unique work with the religious mountain people of North Carolina and East Tennessee. His wisdom and insight through the writing of The Burnt Schoolhouse will prove a worthy tool in helping to set the captives free.

    PREFACE

I clicked open my e-mail to find a message from a lady asking me to pray for her daughter. It is not unusual for someone to make such a request of me, but the request itself was not like most. She began to pour out her fear and uncertainty by telling me her daughter had been driven from her apartment. There was a presence in her room that had terrified her. This presence had even scratched her, locked doors in the apartment, and moved objects.

To many, this is something from a sci-fi movie, but to this lady and her daughter, it was all too real. They wanted this experience to stop—and stop immediately. There was fear and great panic in her writing that suggested to me that they were telling the truth. As a minister, I hear many things from people about their personal lives, but stories such as this strike a particular tone with me because of my own history with the occult and its influences in my family and my life.

After years of grappling with what was really behind ghosts, UFOs, aliens, dark shadows, and other such things that polite people do not wish to speak of aloud for fear of sounding like a crackpot, I have decided to put together some things that I have learned over the years. I have struggled with what the occult has done to my family and how deeply ingrained it seems to be in the lives of people. The truth is that most people deny being a part of any occult practices but may be unaware of their involvement and may be inviting a dark and evil presence into their lives. These practices seem innocent at first but soon entrap the unsuspecting person in their web of deceit, and great harm is done to the individual. This can often lead to depression or anxiety, divorce, and even suicide. As Christians, we should always remember that Satan seeks to destroy us in any way that he can. He hates you and is willing to deceive you in every way imaginable to wreck your life, even if he cannot wreck your soul.

It is my prayer that this book helps solve some riddles in your own life. Whether you have struggled with the occult or have just been curious about the source of the things that go bump in the night, I hope that you find peace in these pages and victory for your life that will lead you into the rest that you deserve in Jesus Christ.

    CHAPTER 1

COFFEE GROUNDS AND THE MEN IN THE CUP

I grew up in the high mountains of northwestern North Carolina, in a little town called Jefferson. Jefferson was a normal small town but very isolated from the outside world. This is both good and bad, in that technology and creature comforts were slower getting there, but so were the influences of the outside world. For all of its beauty and isolation, the mountains of North Carolina also harbor great superstitions and occult practices (even though the people would deny this) that still continue to this day.

I had two very unique families. My father’s family attended church regularly. My grandparents were strong Christians, and there were many preachers in my father’s family. Not everyone in Dad’s family was a Christian, but there were more Christians than not. On this side, there seemed to be more peace, and life was pretty good.

But Mom’s family was quite different. They lived in Little Horse Creek, above Lansing. This part of the county is isolated from the rest of the county, and many people who lived there in my younger days rarely came into Jefferson, which was town proper, but went into Lansing, which was a small village, for their needs.

The people of the mountains were very clannish and hardworking people. They were people of the earth, and for the most part they were honest and sincere. My grandmother, Bertie, had a laugh that was contagious, and she loved life. She was pleasant to be around, and everyone who knew her loved her. She supported a multitude of birds with bread from her table, and many of them would eat from her hand.

She and my grandfather, Charlie, lived in a four-room shack and had ten children. One died at three months, and one was a miscarriage. That made eight children and two adults living in a house with no indoor plumbing. If you needed a restroom, you had to go out a little path from the house to the outdoor toilet, or Johnnie house, as we called it. My grandmother cooked on a wood cook stove, where she heated water for washing dishes and bathing. Cooking was primitive but hearty and good. There was a spring under a rock out behind
