Many thanks to my family for their support and belief in my ideas; to my doctors, who supported and encouraged my weight loss efforts; and to Lauren Studios in Albany, New York, for searching their archives for my before pictures and the wonderful cover photos.

    Foreword

Norma has made an incredible wellness journey over the past five years and has improved her health and vitality. Her struggle began years earlier, when despite normal body weight throughout childhood, she noticed her weight increasing in her early twenties, despite no changes in her diet or activity patterns. She was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and started on thyroid hormones, but continued to gain weight, reaching a top weight of 248 pounds in 2004. She attempted numerous diet plans, and would successfully drop 10-15 pounds but would rapidly regain the weight.

At the time of her initial evaluation in July 2006 she was at high risk for heart disease due to elevated cholesterol and metabolic syndrome. In addition she struggled with severe fatigue and D deficiency.

Over the past five years Norma has lost nearly seventy pounds, dropping from a weight of 248 to 166 pounds. Her blood sugar levels have normalized. She reports major improvement in her energy level and quality of life. She is exercising on a regular basis. We applaud her efforts on her journey toward health and wellness.

toward well established guidelines set forth by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association. For the past twelve years she has shown the benefits of an aerobic based activity program with careful weight reduction in her daily routine.

Although Norma is not one of my patients, I have seen in her the struggles of living with being overweight and having diabetes that many of my own patients have to cope with every day. Following a diet, exercising, testing blood sugars and taking daily medications to get blood sugars under great control becomes a job in itself for many of my patients. Norma has worked so hard over the years to lose weight by trying many different traditional
