About this ebook

\The Story of Preaching is a fresh look at the preacher and preaching from the early days of the Church until today. It is not a history of preaching because there are some obvious gaps in the timeline. What I have attempted to do is to describe the preacher and the characteristics of the period in which he or she lived. One of the things which I have tried to do is to show how the preachers handled the issues of their day. One of my objectives in doing this is to help the preachers of my day to address the issues of this era as the preachers of old addressed the issues in their time. The book will show that some who dared to challenge the attitudes of their day faced many challenges, and some even faced death because of their commitment to apply the principles of the gospel to the status quo of their day. However, the book will show that there were those who challenged the mode of their time without facing death or threats of death. They found a way to present their concerns to their constituents in a way that lead to success.

    DEDICATION

This book is dedicated to the memory of my pastors.

Edward Wilkins was my first pastor. He is the pastor who baptized me into the membership of the Floyd Baptist Church in rural central Alabama in 1947. I shall never forget the morning when he took me out under an old oak tree in the churchyard and talked to me about being saved. It was in the evening service after that conversation that I made my decision to give my heart to Jesus. It was a decision that I have never regretted.

Maxwell Harper was the pastor of the Verbena Baptist Church when my Dad decided to quit farming and take a job as a carpenter in Montgomery. Consequently, we moved from the farm into the little village of Verbena. Brother Harper was a student at Howard College in Birmingham while he was the pastor of the Verbena church.

George Brown was my pastor for a very short time. All I can remember about him is his son, Sam, who lived with my family and me for a while so he could enroll in the Verbena school and not have to transfer in the middle of the school year. Sam and I have continued to be friends through the years.

Dr. Lee Gallman was the pastor of the Second Baptist Church in Montgomery when my parents and I moved from Verbena to Montgomery. He was the first seminary trained pastor I ever knew. He remained my friend even after he left Second Baptist Church.

Kelly Johnson was the pastor at Second Baptist Church when I made the decision to preach. He encouraged me in that decision and gave me my first opportunity to preach. He was also my pastor when I was ordained to the ministry in 1953.

Dr. Bronnie E. Nichols was my pastor and my boss when I served as associate pastor of the Forest Lake Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. I have often said that I got my degrees from Howard College and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, but I got my education in ministry while working with Dr. Nichols at Forest Lake.

I am grateful for all of my pastors, including my current pastor, Dr. Paul Strahan, at the First Baptist Church of Owensboro, Kentucky. They have all contributed to my life and my work as a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

My initial motivation to write this historical story of preaching came to me when I was asked to develop a seminar on preaching for the Newburgh Seminary in Newburgh, Indiana. However, through circumstances beyond my control, I was not able to lead the seminar. After doing all the work and not being able to use the material as planned, I thought there must be a way to take advantage of all the work that I put into the seminar preparation. So I came upon the idea of putting the work on the seminar in a book, and this is that book.

However, since in the beginning, I had no idea of publishing this material, I did not take the painstaking time to footnote the material. Therefore, I want to acknowledge the sources to which I turned in preparing this material:

    LecturesontheHistoryofPreaching by John A. Broadus

    AHistoryofPreaching by Edwin Charles Dargan

AHistoryofPreaching by O. C. Edwards, Jr

TwentyCenturiesofGreatPreaching by Clyde E. Fant, Jr and William M. Pinson, Jr.

    GreatEvangelicalPreachersofYesterday, by James McGraw

    AConciseHistoryofPreaching by Paul Scott Wilson

    TheInterpreter’sBible edited by George Buttrick

    TheInterpreter’sDictionaryoftheBible edited by George Buttrick

Further details about these sources can be found under Bibliography in the back of this book.

I must also acknowledge the assistance of my wife, Martha, in the preparation of this material. Without her help this work would still be in the making. She has not only helped me to find the errors in it, but she has also encouraged me to finish it instead of putting it on the shelf for a later time.

I would also like to thank my daughter, Panda Prickett Krouse, for the gift of her artistic hand in designing the front cover.

    PREFACE

This material was first put together in an effort to lead a seminar on the history of preaching. However, my motivation in publishing this material is not to write another history of preaching.

This then is not a history of preaching. It is not a critique of preaching through the ages. It is not a survey of preaching through the ages; and it is not a synopsis of preaching through the ages. It is an abbreviated analysis of preaching through the ages, and of the preachers and the issues of their time. It is the story of preaching and preachers through out the ages.

It is my prayer that as you read these words of mine you will be challenged to be the best preacher you can be. It is also my hope that you will gain a great appreciation of the preachers who have gone before you; and just maybe this appreciation will lead you to face the issues of today in a positive and forceful manner as these preachers who have gone before you did.

    God bless!

    T. A. Prickett

    WHAT IS PREACHING

Before we begin thinking about the story of preaching, I think it would be in order to ask, what is preaching? If we are to be serious in our study of preaching, we need to be sure we understand what we mean by preaching.

To preach means to make a proclamation as a herald. A herald (preacher) is a public messenger who lifts up his voice and claims public attention to some definite news he has to announce. Christian preaching is the public proclamation of the good news, i.e. the gospel of Jesus Christ to the non-Christian world. Yet there is a difference between the proclamation of a town crier and the preaching of the gospel. A herald may be more or less indifferent to the news he proclaims. The Christian preacher, to the contrary, is a man who himself has been Laid hold on by Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:12) and who personally believes in the good news he announces to others.

The New Testament draws a clear distinction between to preach and preaching; and on the other hand between to teach, and teaching. Preaching is the proclamation of the gospel to men who have not yet heard about it. Teaching is instruction or explanation of various aspects of the Christian life, and it is addressed to a community already established in the faith (The Interpreters Bible, volume 3, page 868). In other words preaching is proclamation, and teaching is explanation.

    PREACHING IN THE

    OLD TESTAMENT

The Old Testament writers seldom used the term preaching to describe the mission of the prophets. In fact, their commission was to exhort the elect to remain faithful to their God. It may be compared to the role of the Christian pastor (preacher) in
