Ernst Cassirer
Ernst Cassirer wird 1874 in Breslau geboren. Er studiert Jura, Literatur und Philosophie in Berlin, wechselt aber dann nach Marburg und schließt sich der Marburger Schule des Neukantianismus an. 1899 erfolgt die Promotion mit einer Schrift über Descartes bei Paul Natorp. Nach seiner Habilitation 1906 hält Cassirer als Privatdozent Lehrveranstaltungen in Berlin und folgt dann 1919 einem Ruf an die neugegründete Universität in Hamburg. Hier kommt es zu einer außerordentlich fruchtbaren Zusammenarbeit mit der Kulturwissenschaftlichen Bibliothek Warburg, in der der Grundstein für die Entwicklung seines Hauptwerkes Die Philosophie der symbolischen Formen gelegt wird. In diesem dreibändigen Werk (1923-29) wird der Entwurf einer systematischen Philosophie der Kultur unternommen. Dem Begriff der symbolischen Formen, in denen sich menschliches Erleben mit Hilfe z. B. von Sprache, Kunst, Mythen oder Wissenschaft ausdrückt, kommt dabei die Funktion zu, einen geistigen Bedeutungsgehalt mit einem sinnlichen Zeichen zu verknüpfen. Kultur ist in diesem Zusammenhang die Sinnschöpfung des Menschen durch Symbole, was dem Umstand Rechnung trägt, daß es auch primitivere Formen der Welterkenntnis gibt.1933 emigriert Ernst Cassirer über England nach Schweden und nimmt die schwedische Staatsbürgerschaft an. Acht Jahre später übersiedelt er mit seiner Frau und drei Kindern nach Amerika, wo er bis zu seinem Tod 1945 verschiedene Lehrtätigkeiten ausübt.
