Stress. Stress is defined as the brain's response to any demand.[1]
Your brain and body react in different ways to different types of stress. Some stress is mild - like catching the morning train on time or studying to pass the upcoming test - and other stress can be severe - like a car accident. Or, of course, divorcing your crazy partner. Stress can affect different people in different ways. Watching a scary movie may be traumatizing and trigger reactions like excess adrenaline and rapid heartbeat OR it may be no big deal with completely opposite affects. Stress can be a life saver, allowing you to jump quickly out of the way of a moving car. Stress is a problem when it becomes chronic, which is sustained stress over a long period of time. This is not stress that goes away and it can lower your body's immunity and suppress some of your body's normal functioning. This can include: headaches, inability to sleep, irritability, and digestive issues. Other, even more serious issues can include: depression, heart disease, and diabetes.
When you have normal stress, you can handle it and move on. When you have chronic stress, you can't always handle it. This is especially true when you have no control over the stress. You notice you can't concentrate, you feel anxious for no good reason, you can't relax and you feel irritable, and you seem to have more aches and pains. If some of this sounds like you, you are probably stressed. Now everyone gets stressed. Many times stress can help you get through hurdles, like a work presentation or finishing a report. Most people can handle normal stress and everyday stress. When you get hit with more stress than you can handle, that's when you can have negative physical and psychological effects.
I, too, have had to battle overwhelming stress. While dealing with this stress, I discovered various ways to help handle and manage it. That is what this book is about, managing your stress with an emphasis on dealing with stress caused by a high conflict divorce. I hope to show what I've done to relieve and control some of this stress and how you can use that to deal with your stress.
