John Hibbert

John Hibbert is the son of a Yorkshire coal miner and since early childhood has had a passionate desire to serve God.  He is a husband, father, grandfather and company director, but above all, a preacher of the Gospel.  His world travels, together with his knowledge of the Scriptures, have inspired in him a godly compassion for his fellow men, together with an understanding of the views and feelings of others.  His love for Arab as well as Jew, enhanced by his visits to the region, are revealed in this controversial book.  This is his second semi-fictionalised work.  The first, "The Virgin & The Dragon", deals with the life of the Virgin Mary.

    INTRODUCTION

The Lord Jesus cried from His cross, My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me? He was expressing shock, because He had not anticipated that He would have to bear this burden alone. It was part of the cup He had agreed to drink, but only as He felt the dreadful loneliness of that moment, did He realise the full implications of His commitment. He was committed because He loved. It was only as the love was translated into practice that the full pain of His commitment became a reality to Him.

And so it is with us. We make our commitment to Christ because we love Him. We surrender everything to Him and promise Him our obedience, and so we should. The fact is, however, that we do it in ignorance. We have no idea which painful road we may be called to tread. We have no understanding of the price we may have to pay to fulfil the Divine purpose for our lives. What we do know is, that the One who calls, equips; that the One who promises, provides; and that, although it may seem that God is nowhere to be seen, He is always standing in the wings, waiting for the perfect moment to intervene. It was so in the experience of our Lord. It was essential that one man alone pay for the redemption price of humankind, so the Father had to withdraw, but He never for a moment took His eyes of love away from His beloved Son. He was there all the time, In Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself.

There is a moment in the story that I am about to tell you, when I felt that He had forsaken me. It appeared that He had let me down and I felt lost and alone and afraid. Within the space of twenty four hours I learned that the very opposite was true. I discovered that, in the most miraculous way, the One who I thought had left me alone had been planning for ten years to meet my need. It was one of the most important lessons of my life.

I am sure that Esperanza, the woman whose story this is, must have thought on many occasions that, if there was a God, He was certainly not on her side. Yet through the trials, betrayal, anguish and suffering of her life, she became a provider in His hand. A kind and gracious God saw the potential in her heart to love Him enough to one day thank Him for the suffering that brought her first to Him and then made her, in His purposes, a channel of His love to others, and to me!

So, whatever your present circumstances may be, don’t despair, or think for a moment that God does not care. Maybe just around the next bend it will become clear that God made an appointment a decade ago to meet you in this lonely place, that He might show you His glory. As my friend Stephen Jeffs often says, adding a little humour to his undoubted reverence and respect for His Saviour, We never know what the Lord has up His holy sleeve!

I hope this short story will bless you as much as it has blessed me.

    CHAPTER ONE

All was silent in the Andalusian town, Huelva, in south western Spain. The year was 1943 and Europe was ravaged with war. Although General Franco’s private allegiance was with the Axis powers of Germany, Italy and Japan, Spain remained militarily dormant during the war years. This, however, did not prevent silent hostilities existing between the large German and British communities in the town and the considerable espionage activity which thrived in the non-violent atmosphere.

It was 9.30am on the 30th April and the temperature was already a very pleasant 68°F. Lieutenant Manuel Garcia was strolling arm in arm with his pretty young lady friend, Maria, along the picturesque sea-front of the town. They were lost in the romance of the moment as they gazed out across the Atlantic Ocean towards the distant north western coast of Africa.
