The Search for Substance: The Consumption, Addiction, Detoxification, and Relapse of Life

About this ebook
The Search for Substance questions the direction of our lives and our motivations. We find that our challenges and opportunities to inspire and to be inspired are limited based on our skewed view of the world. For these reasons, we are on an endless journey in which faith, failure, and incite detour or determine the impact of our presence. The ability to define and catalogue our experiences may grant us enough space to live in our success and build a bridge from who we are to who we want to be. Our flaws create our character and since real life comes with no scripts, the ability to improvise helps us to survive. The moment we identify what we consider substance, then the when, how and why we search will forever provide us with answers.
It is true that we often create goals based on the things we want to possess in life. Somehow during this process, we find purpose and the adventure solidifies the amount of time we have invested in our own growth. This discovery of who we are and who we can become remains priceless and the true value of failing is found in how we respond. These poems examine how we respond.
Crow
This Brooklyn, New York native serves as a mirror to the people, places and challenges found in neighborhoods where poverty, a poor educational system, and limited opportunities run wild. With an unsure future, Crow fell in love with music and his penmanship eventually followed. In 2002, Crow became one of co-founders and orginal members of the poetry troupe “Machismo Redefined”, showcasing his voice and theatrical talents while performing at multiple poetry venues including the world-famous Nuyorican Poets Café. In addition, he wrote, published and distributed his first poetry book and soundtrack entitled “Blank Pages”. In 2003, Crow was featured on ESPN during the NBA 2002-2003 All-Star game. After taking a few years off to focus on being a first time father, Crow would eventually return in 2008 with another poetry book and soundtrack called "Windows to my Past", and then a year later with "Sinning on my way to Church". While fostering relationships and continuing to perform throughout the country, he presents his most anticpated and thought provoking poetry book to date "The Search for Substance".

About the Author
Good Morning
I rose instead of pushing daisies
So everything beyond this moment is easy
I emerge and stretch from the covers
Adjusting my vision as another opportunity
Leaks through the blinds
I find the bathroom in just enough time
And release yesterdays consumption
Eager to start a new and refuel
I sanitize and take 45 minutes to stabilize
Before I baptize my skin while reflecting
On then and now, anticipating what is to come
I groom, deodorizes, polish my porcelain
Identify and embody today’s disguise
Hiding more than my assets
And showing off much more than my purchasing power
Yet my ability to attract, command,
And repel at a glance
Toiletries heighten my natural lure and circumference so
If my presence doesn’t clay and leave an impression
My aroma is therapy
And everyone knows (nose) I was here
Whether I recognize it or not
In turn I choose my fuel
And everything that I consume
It all varies from my ability to break fast
And the size of my appetite
The quickest route to my destination
Remains on my determination to drive or ride
Undeterred by traffic
Yet inspired by the journey and volume
And complexity of my playlist
I avoided all that I could
Though my outlook when I arrive may still differ
From my initial perception when I left
I expand and contract based on the things I keep
And my ability to let things go, I know
I am unable to pause, so my commitment to moving forward
Stimulates and carries me until I return to my starting point
Remove the disguise, filter my experience
And pamper my pours
Hoping when I shut my eyes
It is not for good
And I’ll have the pleasure of doing it all over again
But even better
Good Morning
missing image fileCome as you are
I knew your path before
Your parents consummated and infused
Characteristics to create you
I made blessings
You wear like lessons
Even before your adolescents
For in all things
You have to crawl
Before you can walk
Your life is the accumulation
Of cause and effect
Being smothered and responding to neglect
The urge to avoid, your drive when being detoured
And your ability to be direct
This is chest
So every position is not equal
In strength or mobility
Yet every position has a purpose
Even a pawn has the potential
To change the game
I catch you contemplating
Your curiosity
I don’t expect you to walk on water
But I believe in you
So every time you do the right thing
You inspire some unknown soul
To plant a dream in you
And see the possibility of achieving
Their own
I know who you can be
Even when your dark side
Is in control
I am still your passenger
Ready to take the wheel
Whenever you are ready to let go
I will never abandon you
But you must earn the right to be by my side
To bathe in my grace
To receive all I can provide
I will challenge your will
To thrive
The temperature of your tolerance
The fear found in your failure
And your instincts to survive
It doesn’t matter what you call me
As long as you call me
For you can do, be, live, love and learn
Based on your expectations
As long as you believe in me
As I believe in you
I Owe You
You find kind words
Though my actions deserve far worst
I lean on your accounts
Harder than any bank
As if you co-signed for my debts
Though I would never risk your credit
But you loan me incite
Even when I have clearly overdrawn
I could never repay your wisdom and honesty
Honestly I haven’t earned half of your generosity
I have probably found dependency in your dependency
And I maybe on the verge of an overdose
Because your approach filters my income
And for the first time in my
