    Reunion - JacqueD

    Chapter 1

    The Beginning

A s the sun descended over the horizon the skies turned a bright yellow and orange with strips of crimson red that seemed to blend in forever against the pastel blues, creating a beautiful, natural work of art.

Sara sat quietly upon a pillowed window sill with her arms curled up tight around her knees, hugging them close against her breast as she stared out the window. The colors seemed to hypnotize her as she drifted off, the memories returning time after time, haunting her as she wandered back revisiting the past. Each memory as vivid as the day her nightmares began.

Here she comes, a chubby Marcy snickered.

C’mon, let’s get ready. We can act all cool like nothin’s happenin’, and when she gets here I’ll scratch my head, that’ll be my cue to grab her, Kitty directed, tossing her long, black hair over her shoulder.

Sara took short, quick strides as she walked across the parking lot unaware of her fate just moments away. A big smile adorned her face as she neared the crowd of teenagers; warm with the feeling they were accepting her as a part of their group of friends. She placed one hand above her eyes. The sun blinded her as she looked in the direction of her peers standing in the parking lot just a few feet away from her now.

Boy there’s lots of kids up here today, Sara thought.

Hey Sara! Mike, a tall lanky boy called out to her.

Sara waved as she moved closer to the crowd of teens.

Hi everybody. Thanks for inviting me up Crissy, said Sara.

Yeah right, Crissy replied twirling her bubble gum around her finger and then popping it back into her mouth.

Hey girl, let me see what ya got in them shorts? a boy Dan chuckled as he ran his fingers through his hair.

Shut up ya stupid jerk! Kitty snapped. Don’t pay no mind to him Sara; he’s nothin’ but a perverted retard.

Sara smiled but she still couldn’t fight the uneasy feeling that was beginning to settle in the pit of her belly. They had not been a bit nice to her in the few prior months that she had lived there. Instead she had been teased daily with hillbilly jokes, and heard the giggles while they deliberately bumped into her, passing in the hallways at school. She couldn’t help but wonder why there was an unexpected change in their attitudes towards her, now wanting to be sociable. She pushed the uneasy feeling aside and smiled. She wanted to make friends, and somehow now seemed to be the time to do that. She decided not to let some boy’s smart remarks scare her into walking away.

Paul, a rather tall, well built, blonde haired boy walked over and placed his arm around Sara’s shoulders pulling her close to his side and whispered in her ear.

Relax girl everything’s cool. Then he cleared his throat and asked, Ya got a boyfriend?

Uh no, I’m, uh… well I’m really not allowed to date yet, Sara responded nervously.

Damn that’s messed up, ’cause you ain’t a half bad lookin’ chick, Paul remarked as he dropped his arm from around her and stepped back.

Really now, I heard ya got a crap load of boys hangin’ out on your door step, Kitty teased.

Yeah, that’s what I heard, a boisterous Sandy blurted.

The group of teens moved closer, forming a circle around Sara. The voices became whispers, and Sara began to feel uneasy. Things didn’t seem to be as friendly as she hoped they would be. Sara decided to try and break the ice a bit by making idle conversation.

So, is there a party or something going on? Sara asked.

I guess ya could say that, Kitty remark with a Cheshire cat sort of grin.

Oh really, where’s it at? Sara asked.

Where? Hmm, well… I guess ya might say it’s right here, Kitty replied reaching up and giving herself a scratch on the head, signaling the crowd that now was the time to deploy their devious plan.

Suddenly Sara was rushed and knocked to the ground while the boys looked on. She felt the blows of being kicked and punched repeatedly. The sound of laughter rang out as the boys cheered on the group of girls.

Sara opened her eyes in efforts to regain her bearings. She was face down on the pavement and her belly scraped against the rough surface. Someone had a handful of her hair, pulling it hard and shoving her face down into the pavement. The grinding sensation with tiny bits of gravel burned at her cheeks. She tried desperately to pull her head up, and making an effort to fight the girl off. Suddenly she was punched hard and her eye began to swell. Her ribs ached from the repeated kicks to her sides.

Why are they doing this to me? Sara thought to herself, and wondered how long they would continue this act of violence against her.

Ya stinkin’ bitch! Crissy yelled out.

Yeah ya tramp, this’ll keep your ass away from our guys, Kitty added.

Each girl yelled their obscenities at Sara as they kicked and punched her, and the boys continued to cheer them on.

A few minutes had passed before one of the boys yelled out, Take it off! The crowd began to chant over and over, "Take it off, take it off!

Yeah get them drawers, Paul yelled out.

Sara felt Sandy reaching beneath her, tugging clumsily at the button snap of Sara’s wrangler shorts. She knew full well of the intentions and began to struggle all the more.

    No! Sara screamed franticly.

Shut up bitch! Kitty yelled out.

Sara reached down with one hand hoping to hold on to her shorts while using her other to block the repeated blows to her face. She grabbed hold tight to the top of her shorts and managed to slip her middle finger through a belt loop and locked her fingers around the adjoining material. She could feel tugging at her pant legs and began to kick wildly.

    Noooo! Sara screamed with panic.

Sara kicked and flung her free arm aimlessly through the air. She began to lose control as her instincts went into defense mode. Her fist clinched tight laying a blow to Kitty’s nose drawing blood.

Ya fuckin’ bitch I’ll kill your ass now! Kitty screamed.

Kitty stood up and kicked Sara directly in the head. The impact thrust Sara’s head back into the pavement dazing her. Hands continued pulling at her shorts until they began to slide down over her hips. Dizzy from the blow to her head Sara slowly opened her eyes and blinked. She could feel her shorts moving down and over her knees.

    Noooo! she screamed again.

Sara had done everything she could to try to stop them, but it was clear she was fighting a losing battle. Her stomach knotted up as she felt her shorts slip over her feet. Tears rolled down her burning cheeks. She didn’t know if they were tears of pain or embarrassment.

Yeeee haw! Kitty yelled out as she ran in circles swinging Sara’s shorts over her head, whipping them through the air as the crowd looked on laughing hysterically.

The hitting and kicking had stopped, but the pain of sheer embarrassment had settled in her. Sara’s body ached from head to toe. She struggled to get a grip as she slowly pulled herself up from the ground. She placed her hands over herself in an attempt to cover up. The crowd roared with laughter, each making crude remarks.

Shoo wee, we got the goods now, a red haired, pimply faced Clyde laughed.

Sara looked down at her legs. She could feel the blood trickling down from the deep scrapes in her knees. Her eyes over flowed with tears as her heart pounded in her chest.

Can I please have my pants back? Sara pleaded with tear filled eyes.

Say what? You want what girl? Kitty snapped.

My shorts… can I please have them back? Sara continued to plead.

Awe, give the girl her damn drawers, she said please, a boy Mark called out.

So ya want these do ya? Kitty teased as she waved Sara’s shorts through the air followed by a jig.

Yes please, I want to go home now, Sara replied teary eyed.

Now ya sure these are yours, ’cause I could swear they was mine? Yep, they look just my size, Kitty teased holding the shorts up and turning them from front to back.

Shit Kitty ya better lose about 50 pounds to fit in them damn shorts, Dan laughed with the others joining in to give a chuckle.

Up yours! Kitty snapped, throwing up a middle finger.

Sara stared directly at Kitty wondering if the group had their fill of ill-gotten fun at her expense, and hoped Kitty would hand her shorts back to her so she could go home.

Here take ’em, Kitty said as she held them out in Sara’s direction. Sara stepped forward reaching to grab her shorts from Kitty. Just as her fingers touched the denim they were yanked from her reach with Kitty laughing and swinging them through the air again.

Ha ha, don’t cha just wish, Kitty laughed out loud.

    Over here! Sandy called out.

As Kitty turned and tossed the shorts into the crowd Sara lunged forward in an attempt to catch them in her hands, and missing them by inches before someone else snatched them from her reach.

Are you lookin’ for these? Tess laughed as she tossed them in the opposite direction into the crowd.

They taunted Sara for what seemed to be an eternity to her, tossing her shorts back and forth, laughing as she tried desperately to get them back.

Hey let’s see those tits! Alex called out.

C’mon let’s get her! Kitty cheered.

No… no, get away from me! Sara screamed as she turned to run.

Within seconds her body was being pawed at over and over again. The sound of material ripping sent an intense panic through her.

Stop it, leave me alone! Sara screamed as she tried to fight off her offenders.

Shut up ya stupid bitch, Kitty yelled punching Sara hard in the mouth.

Sara’s dainty, cotton blouse came off in pieces. Kitty tossed the shredded material out into the parking lot, and reached out grabbing the back of Sara’s bra ripping it from her body.

Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about, a boy Jimmy yelled out as the others cheered on.

Sara instinctively put her arms up over her small, rounded breasts to hide herself. She was beyond embarrassment, and hoped that somehow this was only a bad dream that she would soon awaken from.

Oh look, she’s shy, Crissy teased.

C’mon girl show us those tits, Dan laughed.

Get her underwear! Tess yelled out.

Within an instant Sara’s panties were torn from her body and she was shoved into the crowd. The group of teens shoved Sara back and forth from one boy to another, each taking his turn feeling the utmost private areas of her body. Her mind spun in circles as she began to lose touch with reality. Sara started to scream and flail her arms about wildly.

Hey! What’re you kids doing over there? a voice yelled out.

Holy shit it’s the cops! Dan yelled.

The crowd departed with each taking off in a different direction, leaving the scene quickly to avoid the consequences from their actions.

Say one word bitch and you’re dead, Kitty remarked as he gave Sara one last punch.

Stop, all of you! I said stop! the officer yelled as he jumped from his squad car.

He knew that he would never be able to catch up to all or any of them, and turned his focus to Sara who stood shaking from head to toe with tears rolling down her face and mumbling, I just wanted to be friends.

The police officer ran over to Sara and shielded her body with his own. He guided her to his car, and pulling a small blanket from the back seat he covered her naked body.

    Are you alright? he asked.

Sara stood in a state of shock staring into space. How could she have ever prepared herself for such an ordeal? She trembled from head to toe trying to grasp reality while another part of her tried to block out the horrific event.

Hey . . . hey… hey, the voice repeated itself. Sara felt a warm hand on her shoulder shaking her hard. She jumped, blinked her eyes and turned around.

    Are you okay?

Yeah… sure, I’m fine, Sara replied.

I thought we lost you for a minute there, her sister Susie remarked.

Oh, I was just day dreaming.

You sure you weren’t having a nightmare?

No, why do you say that?

You looked like you saw a ghost or something.

Nah, twern’t nothin’, Sara jested realizing she was back to her present state.

Sara smiled as she stretched her arms and legs. She pushed her hair back away from her face and yawned. Though she had played it off that everything was kosher, her thoughts were that her sister Susie really had no idea how right she was. Sara had been seeing those ghosts time and time again for more than ten years now as they lingered inside her.

Dinner’s ready and Joe’s a waitin’, said Susie.

It’s about time, Sara teased as she finished up a good stretch and headed across the floor from the den into the dining room.

It took ya’ll long enough, I was just about ready to eat without you, Joe remarked.

Joe Douglas was a rather handsome, well natured man, sensitive and caring, a good hearted man raised with good morals. He was born the fourth of seven sons to Abigail and Hubert Douglas, and grew up in Allendale New Jersey. At seventeen Joe made the decision to leave home, and to make his own way in this world. He was well aware of the financial struggles his parents faced, and knew that his leaving would lighten their burdens. He had taken on every odd job he could get working his way down to Washington DC. Eventually he was hired full time at the Longfellow Construction Company, and was now working his way up with a small business of his own.

A year after he married Susie Blake he agreed to have her sister Sara move in with them. Sara had completed high school, and Susie thought it would be a good idea to have her sister move in, and out from under their mother’s wing. Sara had been too withdrawn from everything and everyone the last few years of school. Susie believed that all Sara really needed was a little boost to get out into the world. That she needed to feel independent with a good sense of freedom, and to become more involved with other people. This was supposed to be on a temporary basis until Sara was able to stand on her own. After Susie explained things to Joe he was more than understanding of his wife’s ideas.

Hmmm, if you don’t mind sharin’ with your sister, I’m game, Joe teased.

Hey, I’m only willing to share the house, not my bed or my man, but I bet you wish, Susie remarked with a giggle, and then threw open arms around his neck and gave him a big a kiss.

The only person left to convince was their mother. There wouldn’t be a bit of trouble from their father as he was far too easy going and agreeable to things no matter what they were. Susie and Sara gave every reason possible that they could think of as to why this was such a good idea. After more than an hour of listening to her daughters plea for Sara’s independence Mrs. Blake gave in to their ideas on the promise that Sara would call her daily.

Good grief Mama, it’s not like she’s moving to the moon, Susie remarked.

Just let the child grow up, Mr. Blake added.

Sara had taken a job at local bank and moved in shortly after graduation. Ten years had passed and Sara was still there. The comforts of her life in her sister’s home made it difficult to separate from the lifestyle.

Pass the peas pa-leeze, Joe chimed.

Anything else boss man? Susie asked with a grin.

Indeed my dear, but I don’t think the dinner table is a very good place to be passin’ it. Say there missy, meet me up in my office after dinner, Joe teased with a comedic impression.

I swear, is that all men ever think about? Sara asked.

Why no ma’am, and if you ever gave some poor schmuck half a chance you might know that, Joe remarked with a grin on his face.

Don’t you believe a word of it Sara, all men ever think about is sex, sports and booze, and not necessarily in that order, Susie said before giggling and shoving a piece of meat loaf into her mouth.

Awe get outta Dodge Missy, we think about other stuff too, Joe rebelled on behalf of the male race.

Oh yeah, well clue me, said Susie. She couldn’t help but to laugh out loud now.

Oh you know, the usual everyday things like, umm… oh yeah, food, sleep and money, and not necessarily in that order, Joe replied grinning from ear to ear.

Boy did you get that right, Susie chuckled before choking on a sip of soda not expecting such a silly response.

Seriously though girl, start gettin’ out some, enjoy life a bit, and snag up some nice dude that’ll treat you right and take care of you, Joe remarked directing the statement to Sara.

Ah ha, I see now, you’re trying to get rid of me aren’t you? Sara joked.

Now what makes you think that? Why we wouldn’t mind havin’ your mug around for another ten years, even longer. Hell, I think Susie would appreciate some company around here in her old age after I kick the bucket, Joe teased.

I get your point Joe, Sara blurted with a hint of anger.

Come on Sara, you know Joe didn’t mean it that way at all. He’s always making a joke out of everything, Susie remarked.

Well joke or not, I seriously didn’t find it a bit funny. And you don’t have to worry or make up stupid jokes about it, because I’ll be out of your house soon enough, said Sara.

For Heaven’s sake Sara, I didn’t mean nothin’ by what I said, Joe said.

Really Sara, don’t go making something out of nothing, Susie added.

I’m not; it’s just a fact is all. I’ve got enough money saved up now that I can afford to get out on my own. Actually, I had planned to tell you that I’m moving out, Sara said in a quite matter of fact tone.

Sara had taken Joe’s teasing very much to heart. It wasn’t the first time that he made silly remarks and joked about how long she had lived there, or about her leaving. Lord knows how tired she was of his remarks about finding a man to take care of her. To Joe and Susie it may have been a funny joke, but Sara took it very seriously after a while. Now her frustrations had landed her foot in her mouth so to speak. As much as the idea of being alone frightened her, she would have to move out now just to show them both how serious she was. If she didn’t, no doubt good natured Joe, all in fun or not, would definitely have something else to tease her about. She would never live it down if she didn’t move out now. Fortunately for Sara she had managed put aside quite a tidy sum for her future over the years by living for next to nothing in her sister’s home.

Dinner finished up quietly, and Joe retired to the den for the evening movie.

You comin’ Sara? It’s one of them blood and guts flicks, Susie asked.

No thanks, you guys go on without me. I’m going to get these dishes done, and read that book I started, Sara said.

    Alrighty then, Susie said.

    Chapter 2

    Making Friends

S ara retired quietly to her upstairs bedroom. Once there she reached for the light switch on the lamp that sat upon her night stand. The lamp came on half filling the room with light. She walked across the room taking the book from her dresser, grabbing it up and heading to her bed where she flopped, fluffed her pillows and pulled her knees up to settle in comfortably. Then opening the book she began to read:

Caitlin couldn’t wait to see New York, and now that she was there she couldn’t wait to get back to the comforts and safety of her new apartment. Somehow she had managed to get on the wrong subway train, and found herself lost in the big city. It was late and the few people she had seen were not a bit friendly or helpful to her. She had already been given wrong directions twice, so at 3 a.m. in the morning Caitlin found herself walking in circles. She was frightened and alone as she walked down the long, unfamiliar streets. She could see this was not the best time or place to get lost. She passed the dark alleys with faint rustling noises around her. There was something, or someone moving about in the darkness. The night wind blew pieces of paper in circles around her feet…

The pieces of paper slowly turned into colorful leaves that seemed to dance in circles around Sara’s feet. Once again her mind drifted back to the past. The evening wind blew through her long, silky blonde hair. She hung her head back as the wind whipped her hair in circles, and gazed upward to the stars. Autumn was close at end, and winter would soon be settling in. This was her favorite time of year aside from springtime. With the snow and bitter cold coming she wouldn’t have to hear her mother’s words, Sara, why don’t you go out for a little while dear?

Sara’s mother had often times tried to encourage her to get out of the house, to hopefully meet children her own age and to make some new friends. She had given her daughter that same encouragement tonight. Although Sara didn’t need too much convincing, as she truly enjoyed this time of the year, and taking long walks in the autumn breeze. It always took her mind off things that might be bothering her, and gave her a good sense of peace and tranquility. Walking along the tree lined streets towards the woods reminded her of life on the farm where she had lived most of her life. It wasn’t until her father decided to sell the farm house for financial reasons that the family moved closer to Washington, DC where he could find steady work. They had been able to find a very nice, affordable, two story house earlier that year outside Washington in a Maryland suburban area, and moved in right away.

She remembered the good times of sitting out on the old front porch with Susie, telling tall tales and sharing dreams, giggling as girls do and gazing at the stars to wish upon. Susie was older than Sara by a few years, but the two were inseparable growing up. However, within the first few days after their move to Maryland Susie met Joe, and fell hopelessly in love with him. Despite her parent’s firm demands, after her 18th birthday, Susie moved in with Joe the following month.

Wow, the Big Dipper, Sara said aloud.

Look over here, you’ll see the Little Dipper, a voice spoke from out of the darkness.

Sara came to a rather sudden halt on the sidewalk and turned her head to look around. She was startled to know that she was not alone, and the voice having a familiar tone that was not welcome. As she turned, Mark, one of the local boys stepped out of the darkness onto the moon lit roadway. Sara stood not knowing what to do or say. She well remembered him as a part of the crowd who had teased and tormented her horribly that summer; stripping her of her clothes and beating her as if she were a new found sport. Tonight was the first time she had seen any of them outside the school grounds.

Maybe he’ll keep going, she thought.

Okay, I wouldn’t blame ya a bit if ya spit in my face and walked away, Mark said.

Are you talking to me? Sara asked with a hint of sarcasm.

Well yeah, that is if ya don’t mind.

Why would I want to do that… talk to you?

Okay, ya got me there… Look Sara, I know what happened. It was pretty messed up and shouldn’t have gone that far, and I wouldn’t blame ya a bit if ya hated all of us.

It was totally messed up, and I didn’t do anything to deserve all that, Sara blurted out. She began to get teary eyed remembering the ordeal.

I know ya didn’t. It’s just the girls around here get jealous.

Of what? she asked. I didn’t do anything.

I don’t know. It was messed up, and I wish I hadn’t been there.

But you were, I remember, you told them to give my pants back.

Yeah, for what good that did.

Well, at least you said something on my behalf I guess, Sara said softly.

Do I get credit for that? Mark asked with a boyish smile.

I guess… I mean, it would only be fair to give credit where it’s due, she replied, a bit more at ease meeting him in a different situation.

I can’t take too much credit ’cause I was there and all, but hey, I umm, well I guess what I’m tryin’ to say here is that I really am sorry for what happened. Things just sorta got outta control, Mark said in hopes to explain things away.

Out of control… it never should have happened! Sara yelled, finally able to express the anger she felt deep inside her.

I know that Sara, and ya got every right to be mad. It was wrong what we did, and there’s no excuse, but these chicks get super jealous when a new girl moves in around here. Especially one as pretty as you, I don’t know… it’s like they freak all out and shit. Guess they’re scared you’ll snag up their boyfriends or somethin’.

So it’s just because I’m the new girl?

    Yeah, somethin’ like that.

What did they do to all the other girls? she asked. I know I can’t be the only one.

Same thing, they just teased and de-panted them, and then their families eventually moved away.

What about them, did it ever happen to any of them?

Na, most of them grew up around here so it’s kinda like their own click.

So I guess they think my family is supposed to move now too?

Heck no, Mark said, and then he paused briefly before adding, Actually, everybody felt pretty bad afterward.

    Oh really, they did?

Sara was a bit curious, and tried to imagine if remorse could actually be felt in a bunch that carried out such a heartless act. Every single one of them had acted like they were a pack of wild dogs going in for the kill.

They ought to feel bad, that was a really horrible thing to do to me, or to anyone else for that fact, she added.

Ya know, we got together afterward and talked about it. Some of us were pretty scared ya might have the cops lock us up.

Well I should have, she replied with a sense of control.

Ya sure had the right to. By the way, why didn’t ya?

I don’t know really. I guess I was just glad it was over.

So what happened with that cop that showed up?

He took me home, and then said if I could remember anything, like identify anybody, that I should call him.

What about your parents, what did they say when they saw ya like that?

Luckily they weren’t there when I got home. I convinced the officer I was okay and he left, and when my folks got home asking me what happened, I just told them I wrecked on my bike.

So your parents didn’t talk to the cop?

No, but he did come back a couple days later to talk to them.

    What’d they say?

They weren’t home. My dad was at work and my mom was shopping.

    So what happened?

I told him my mom set it up for me to talk to a counselor.

Look Sara, I don’t expect ya to forgive and forget, but can ya at least try to forgive me? I really am sorry for what happened.

Are you trying to say that you want to be my friend now? Sara responded question for question. She was a bit surprised by the fact that after all that had happened; he would have an interest to become friends.

Sure I do, so does everybody else. We’re all sorry for what went down.

They do? I mean… they’re really sorry and want to be friends now?

Mark lowered his head in a gesture of shame, looking to the ground and kicking a stone across the road. He genuinely appeared to be sorry for what had happened to Sara that summer day, and now stood before her with what seemed to be a sincere apology.

Yeah, I guess so. We wanna try to make up for what we did.

Sara wasn’t quite sure what to make of this. She had moved to this town full of excitement. Though she had loved her life on the farm, she had always felt that she was missing out on so much by not having close, neighboring friends. Her hopes had been high when they first arrived. She had looked forward to making several friends, and up until now things hadn’t been anything like she expected. She had been taunted and teased, and then that terrible ordeal over the summer. And now one of her offenders stood before her with his apologies. He spoke not just for himself, but on behalf of all those involved. She had wanted their acceptance from the beginning, but now stood a bit leery. She thought of how much she wanted to fit in, and to be a part of their group of friends. Still she didn’t fully understand why they had done those things to her. She decided it might be worth a try to forgive, and give things a chance with the new school year in session, telling herself that just maybe they really hadn’t intended for things to get so out of hand and were genuinely sorry.

Wanna go get a soda? Mark asked.

Who me? she replied a bit dumb founded by the invitation.

No, the man in the moon, he laughed.

Oh yeah… okay, boy that was a really stupid answer, she chuckled.

    "Well do ya?’

    Sure, I’d love to.

When Mark and Sara arrived at the carry out they were greeted at the door. For the first time in a long time she smiled and felt happy.

    Hey Sara! Crissy called out.

Hey Mark what’s up? Clyde yelled from across the room.

Same ol’ same ol’, Mark yelled back.

Boy, everyone is being so nice, said Sara.

I told ya, they’re really sorry for what went down.

I’m glad to know we can put things behind us and be friends.

Hey, let me go grab us a seat, Mark said noticing Kitty en route.

Hi Sara, Dan spoke as he passed by.

Kitty greeted Sara with a warm welcome extending her apology.

Hey, I’m really sorry I acted like a jerk. Did Mark tell ya?

Yeah, he explained things to me. I guess I can understand, Sara replied.

Does this mean we can bury the hatchet? Kitty asked.

I guess so… I mean, well I don’t see why not. I’m just sorry we got off on the wrong foot, Sara replied.

So, are we friends now? Kitty asked with a smile.

Sara looked over at Kitty’s hand, and for a moment she recalled the last time she saw Kitty extend her hand, throwing a blow to her head. Then looking up into her eyes, she reached out and shook Kitty’s hand.

So we’re cool? Tess asked walking up to the two girls and shaking Sara’s hand.

As a cucumber, Kitty replied with a grin.

Cool then, Tess said patting Kitty on the back and holding her own hand out to Sara.

Sara, c’mon over here, Mark called out from a booth across the room.

Sara turned her head to see that Mark had reserved a booth for them on the far side of the carry out.

Later guys, she remarked as she parted company from the girls.

Sara was starting to feel quite at ease now. As she neared the booth Mark slid a soda pop across the table in front of her seat.

Thought ya might like that soda I offered, he remarked.

Oh thanks, I could use a cold soda about now, Sara replied with a smile. She was taken in a bit by the fact he had been so thoughtful of her.

Sara slid into the booth brushing her hair back away from her face. She picked up her drink and took a small sip before placing it back on the table.

That was really sweet of you to get me a soda, she said with a big smile on her face in her cute southern accent.

So Sara, is it true you’re not allowed to date?

Uh huh, my mom has a major thing about not dating before seventeen, she replied with a half grin.

Bummer man, you’ll probably be outta school by then, and missed all the fun.

Yeah I know… wish I could get her to change her mind, Sara replied. She thought how out of place she would feel going to the school Proms alone.

Well ya know the old sayin’, what they don’t know won’t hurt them, Mark said with a chuckle.

I guess that’s true, but I don’t know who would even want to take me out.

Are ya kiddin’? There’s lots of guys that would jump at the chance. You’re a good lookin’ chick. Hell, I’d like to take ya out sometime, he said giving her a wink.

Sara blushed as red as a ripened cherry with her cheeks all aglow. That was the first time ever that a boy had flirted with her.

And I love that cute little hillbilly accent of yours, Mark added.

Oh, you think I’m a hillbilly do you? Sara laughed as she reached across the table to poke him on the shoulder playfully.

C’mon now, I didn’t exactly say you’re a hillbilly. But even if you were, you’d be one fine lookin’ cousin Daisy in my book.

Oh is that so? Sara asked quite flattered now.

So whadda ya say, will ya go out with me?

Sara was now caught between household rules, want and desire, and knowing that her dating was like voodoo in her household. She was the typical teenage girl with all the same wants as any other girl. She had dreamed of her first kiss, her first love, and all the fun times that went along with the experiences. If she ever got caught going against her mother’s rules, would it dare to be worth the risk? Especially after Susie’s stunt, just how bad could any punishment be? The odds weighed themselves in her thoughts before she finally answered.

I guess I could, but we’d have to be very quiet about it, Sara said as she leaned across the table to whisper her answer.

Cool babe, so why don’t ya come over my house after school tomorrow. I’m havin’ a get together with some of the kids from school.

Umm, well… I’m kind of new at this; I’ve never lied to my folks before.

    C’mon, not even once?

    Well, not like this.

You know what they say; there’s a first time for everything. Tell them ya got study hall or need to go to the library, Mark suggested.

I guess I could say I have a book report and need to go to the library.

    Yeah cool, that’ll work.

    What about your folks?

Oh I’m cool, it’s just me and my mom and she don’t care what I do as long as I’m not crampin’ her style.

It must be pretty nice to be able to make your own decisions and do what you want.

Yeah, she’s kinda got her own life and I got mine if ya know what I mean.

Sara had absolutely no idea what Mark was talking about. All her life she had seen nothing more than the perfect picture of family life. Everyone did things together, and her parents always knew what was going on in their household. At least up until now.

I best be going before my mom gets to wondering where I am and sends out a search party. I wasn’t supposed to be gone long when I left for my walk, Sara said.

It hasn’t been that long has it? But I guess if ya gotta go, ya gotta go.

Mark stood up from his seat and offered to walk Sara home. She graciously accepted feeling somewhat like a proud peacock.

The night breeze had just the slightest bit of chill to it, and the sky held a full moon. Stars lit up the heavens like some far away city. The sounds of car engines in the distance made their own special kind of music. As the two neared Sara’s home she stopped just before the last turn onto her street.

I think this is where we should say good night, Sara said.

Okay, but I’d like to walk ya to the door.

    Well you can’t.

I know, but I just wanted ya to know I would if I could.

That’s very sweet of you, but I’m just glad you walked me this far.

Oh yeah, ya need directions to my house for tomorrow.

That’s right; I don’t know where you live.

Ya know where the drug store is, right?

Yeah, I know where it’s at.

Okay, ya gotta go behind the drug store, that’s 57th Avenue. Then go up three blocks. My house is the one on the corner. Ya can’t miss it; it’s the only house with red shutters.

It sounds easy enough to find.

Yeah, the loud music will be a dead giveaway, Mark said followed with a chuckle.

Okay then, I’ll see you about 4 o’clock then.

Cool babe, see ya tomorrow after school.

Mark leaned down and gave Sara a gentle kiss on the lips as he pulled her close to his warm body. Chills ran up and down her spine as she experienced her very first kiss. She was quite taken by surprise, but rather enjoyed it. She hadn’t ever imagined how soft and warm a boys lips were, or how truly thrilling something as simple as a kiss on the lips would be.

Sara walked away as though she were floating high on a cloud. She would without a doubt remember this moment for the rest of her life. A boy had finally kissed her, and it was definitely nothing like the kisses from her mother, or those cold, clammy kisses her grandmother gave out.

When Sara walked through the door of her house the smile upon her face did not go un-noticed.

My oh my, what are we so happy about this evening? her father asked.

Nothing Daddy, I’m just in a good mood is all, Sara said with a big smile radiating her face.

Is that so, a good mood you say?

Yes Daddy, it’s absolutely beautiful out tonight. You should take a little walk yourself, it’ll do you good.

No thanks Pumpkin, as wonderful as it sounds, I’ve had a very long day, and your mother has stuffed me full with her pot roast tonight. The only thing I have energy left for is to lift my feet up on this ottoman, he remarked as he flopped down into his easy chair putting his feet up.

Sara nearly danced her way across the room to give her father a kiss on the cheek. Leaning down and pressing her lips to his warm, plump face and taking in the wonderful smell of his aftershave.

Think I’ll be going up to my room now, that walk really tired me out, Sara said.

Okay Pumpkin, you get yourself a good night’s sleep.

Good night Daddy, Sara said giving him one last kiss on the cheek before darting upstairs.

Once in her room Sara lay across her bed filled with excitement of the night’s events. She had been accepted by her peers and had made friends. She felt very good about that indeed. The past ill events were now retired from her thoughts, and replaced with a warm feeling of acceptance. She had gotten her first kiss from the most popular guy at school, and to top things off he asked her for a date. One she would most definitely keep.

Sara thought about the softness and warmth of Mark’s lips on hers, so gentle and tender. He had kissed her in such a way as if to know it was her first. She liked the idea of kissing him, and hoped he might be inclined to do so again tomorrow. She recalled looking into his dreamy brown eyes, and loved the way a lock of his hair hung slightly over his forehead. The feel of his muscular arms around her, holding her close to his broad chest had sent chills up her spine. She thought about him more as she bathed and readied herself for bed. Once curled beneath her blanket Sara drifted off into slumber with thoughts of Mark still dancing in her head.

    Chapter 3

    First Love

T he morning sun ascended over the horizon and shined through the window casting a warm beam of sunlight upon Sara’s face. She reached high above her head and gave herself a good morning stretch. She felt as though she had slept a lifetime away. Tossing her blanket aside she pulled herself from the bed and headed for the bathroom.

After her usual morning ritual of face washing and brushing her teeth she returned to her room and gave a final stretch to the day ahead. She walked across the room and opened the closet door, removing a floral print dress from its hanger. Pulling her nightgown off over her head she tossed it on the bed and slipped into the dainty dress. Then she found her way to the dresser and ran the brush through her hair. As she stared at herself in the mirror she thought of how plain she looked. If only her parents would allow her just a lipstick she might not be so plain looking. She slipped her feet into her shoes and turned to head downstairs.

Sara walked from her bedroom and glanced inside her mother’s room as she passed by. She could see the assortment of perfumes and make up arranged neatly on her mother’s dresser. Quietly she tip toed into her mother’s room and over to the dresser. A small wooden box sat on the corner of the dresser filled with samples her mother collected each time she purchased an item from the local cosmetic sales woman. Sara opened the box and poked her finger around inside causing the items to move about inside the box. She watched as they flipped with the touch of her finger. A tiny tube of lipstick popped up catching her attention and she took it from the box. She turned it upside down to read its label, Passion Pink. It seemed to be perfect for her upcoming date with Mark. She knew her mother would never miss the sample lipstick, but she would have to wait until she was long gone from the house to apply it. She tucked the tiny tube inside her bra and left the room.

During breakfast she preoccupied herself with thoughts of the night before, getting a tingling sensation when she thought about her kiss from Mark. She smiled at the idea of it happening again. Sara wondered if Mark was awake, and whether he was eating his breakfast at that exact moment as she was.

Are you going to eat those pancakes or just stare at them? her mother’s voice interrupted her thoughts.

Oh, I’m not very hungry this morning.

Lunchtime is long time away, and you might think to put something in you before leaving the table.

I’ll be okay Mama. I had some juice, and I can eat this muffin on the way, Sara said as she stood up from the table taking a blueberry muffin from a plate.

    Are you sure dear?

Yes Mama… and oh, where’s Daddy?

He had an earlier start than usual this morning.

    Okay, I was just wondering.

    Was there something you needed?

No, I was just wondering where he was. By the way, I have another book report so I’ll be going to the library after school for a couple hours.

A flash of guilt flushed over her as though she had already been caught at something she knew she shouldn’t be doing. Yet at the same time there was a hint of excitement, a thrill if you will imagine, as she realized just how easy telling a lie could be and to go unnoticed.

Sara wasn’t accustomed to telling lies or making up stories to her parents, and this was her second one in just a few months time. Although she really did not like the idea of lying, it did seem to instill a sense of excitement deep within. The only problem was that she herself would always know the truth, and would have to live with that fact as the sense of guilt settled in.

Sara gave her mother a hug good bye and left the kitchen. She grabbed her school books from the dining room table and headed out the door.

See ya later Ma! Sara called out as she closed the door.

Sara walked down the sidewalk on her way to school with the chilly autumn winds blowing straight through her. She buttoned the front of her jacket thinking of how cold her walks would be once winter actually settled in and the snow came. The wind tossed her hair up and around her face. She reached and grabbed it up, pulling the bulk of her hair to the front, twisting it and tucking it inside her jacket.

Hey there little sister, want a ride? Susie called out as she pulled her car off to the side of the road.

Susie! What’re you doing over here so early?

Come on, get in, Susie said as she leaned over and opened the passenger side door.

Brrr, it’s cold out there! Sara remarked when she shut the car door.

I guess so, it’s almost winter time.

So why are you over this way?

Mom didn’t tell you? I’m taking her to the doctor today.

Oh yeah, she did mention something about it yesterday but I forgot, Sara said before inquiring, So how’s Joe?

Great, he’s doing great. Actually we’re both doing great.

    Oh yeah?

Well, ever since Joe landed that construction deal we’ve actually been able to put some money aside. If things keep going like they are, we’ll be able to buy a house in about 2 years, maybe sooner. Then we can get married and do the whole family thing.

Cool, I can move in with you, and Mom can spend all her time hovering over Dad, Sara said with a chuckle.

You know Mom’s just looking out for you.

"Yeah, she worries over all of us, but I see how fast you moved out when you turned eighteen.

Guess she’s gotten more protective over you since I left.

More like weird, these last few months have been crazy.

    Sorry about that little sister.

Well most of all, I really miss not having you there to talk to.

Mom is there, she’ll listen if you got a problem or something.

It’s not the same, there are some things I just can’t talk to her about the same way I can you.

    I hear that.

It’s like… okay, I can’t date and I can’t wear any makeup. I just can’t believe how she is sometimes. It’s like she’s punishing me for what you did.

I know sis, and I know it’s tough. I’m sure mom has her ideas about me taking off with Joe, but I had to follow my heart.

I know you did, but it’s just so unfair to me.

Look Sara, you only have a couple years of school left. After that you can get out on your own, meet a nice guy like Joe and start a life of your own.

    What’s it like?

    What’s what like?

You know… living with a guy.

It’s really nice, better than I expected it might be. My neighbor Lynn says it’s only because it’s new for us and that we’re just living together, and things will change later on, but I don’t believe that a bit, because Joe treats me like a queen.

Sounds like a great life Susie.

It is Sara, and you’ll see one day after you find someone too.

I guess you’re right, but if I don’t can I move in with you and Joe?

We’ll see, it’s a long ways off, Susie said pulling her car up to the curb in front of the high school. Well here you go sis, front door service.

Guess I’ll see you later, Sara said as she exited the car.

    Sure thing kiddo.

Bye, Sara said waving her hand in a farewell gesture as she walked off.

Call me if you need to talk, Susie shouted out.

Sara waved to her sister one final time as she walked her way up the long, concrete stairs to the school. Once at the main entrance she pulled the door open and walked inside, taking long strides down the hall until she reached her locker. She began to fumble with the combination lock, turning the knob one way and then another. Finally getting the code in and popping the lock open. Just as she opened the locker door a pair of hands cupped over her eyes from behind.

    Guess who?

Hmmm, let’s see. Is it the tooth fairy? she said with a giggle knowing that Mark was behind her.

Hey, who ya callin’ a fairy? Mark said as he spun her around and planted a kiss square on her mouth.

Mark stop, you’ll get us both in trouble? Sara blurted as she pushed him back away from her.

The last thing she needed was a suspension from school for getting caught kissing a boy on school grounds. Kissing a boy on any grounds was a ticket to trouble with her parents. They still had not fully accepted Susie running off to live with Joe, and weren’t settled at all with the idea that they weren’t married. Despite her parents ideas she still got that tingling rush at the thought of his lips on hers. There was no denying that she thoroughly enjoyed his kiss.

Umm, I can’t help myself baby, I was up all night just thinkin’ about ya, Mark said.

Is that so? she asked with that girly shyness.

I couldn’t wait to do that again, he said leaning over and whispering his words into her ear.

Sara’s face flushed a bright pink as she held her head down and giggled.

Really? she asked quite flattered by his boyish charm.

For real babe, I’d never have believed in love at first sight in a million years, and then we met.

But last night wasn’t the first time you ever saw me though, she remarked still quite taken by his charming mannerism.

No it wasn’t, but it was the first time I really looked at ya.

I’m not so sure I want to believe that, she replied with a grin.

Well ya just gots ta believe me, can’t cha see it in me eyes? Me hearts a achin’ in the worst way fer ya darlin’, Mark teased in a silly Irish accent, and then leaned in to steal another kiss.

Yeah right, and next you’ll be telling me you’re dying.

Oh no! Who told ya, who’s the dirty rat? Let me at ’em, he replied as he continued his charade.

Sara neatly stacked her books inside her locker taking only those she needed for her morning classes, and then shoved her jacket inside before locking it up. She tried not to laugh out loud as Mark continued his comical antics.

It twas ta be a secret ta spare me fair lady the heartache of losin’ the love of her life, he said in his silly Irish accent, and dropping on one knee reaching up to her with his hand.

Oh go on, you’re just being silly now, Sara said giggling.

Okay seriously, are ya comin’ over my place after school? Mark asked as he got back on his feet.

Yeah, I told my mom I had to go to the library to do a book report.

Great, see ya ’round sweet thang, replied Mark as the bell rang and they parted ways.

Sara saw Mark twice during the school day in-between classes, exchanging glances as they passed each other in the hall. He had winked and blown kisses to her. Each time she held her head low and blushed as butterflies tickled the inside of her tummy.

During their lunch hour the two sat together sharing an ice cream sandwich and small talk. Sara learned Mark was actually a bit older and should have been attending the Senior High, but had been held back twice for truancies. She now understood why most of his grammar was broken English or slang, and somehow found that to be somewhat cute. She leaned on his every word soaking them up like a thirsty sponge. She was falling hard and fast for his charming wit and dark brown eyes. Even after having this time with him, she couldn’t help but think about him throughout the day and meeting up at his house after school.

When the dismissal bell rang the halls flooded with teens scurrying about in a rush to leave. She too headed
