    FOREWORD

Not long ago, I was introduced to The Inner Kitchen. As I delved into this book, I was transported back to December one year ago. I watched myself struggle with adapting to a new gluten-free, vegan lifestyle during the holidays. I already chose to be a vegetarian for whatever length of time was necessary in order to get my health back on track. All I knew was that my body constantly felt tired, stressed, and sick. I located a trusted chiropractic doctor in my area whose practice combined applied kinesiology with nutrition and I started seeing her immediately.

During the second appointment, my doctor instructed me that after reviewing my 2-year history of blood work, she determined that I was dangerously close to brain damage. I was shocked. How could my levels have been in normal limits; passing scrutiny to one doctor but raising flags to another? As it turned out, I am gluten, wheat, dairy, and egg intolerant. I also had adrenal stress and hormone issues. It took me awhile to realize that in seeing these doctors, what I experienced had nothing to do with malpractice and everything to do with education.

I’ve heard others describe stories similar to mine, and I believe that as a collective, we would do well to retrain ourselves to listen to our bodies first. If we don’t, I feel that an adequate level of health care will not be provided in this rapidly changing world. It is up to the consumers and patients to educate themselves and share what they know. We are partners in our own health care and we must start acting like it! Science will develop pharmaceuticals designed for coping and even curing various diseases in its own time, but giving daily attention to our inner wisdom will naturally guide us to prosperity, happiness, and optimum health every time.

Much in the way that our home kitchens nourish and sustain life, The Inner Kitchen guides one to a place of transformation and harmony. This therapeutic book teaches cooking as an intuitive, self-healing modality. Before experiencing the magic of The Inner Kitchen, read Laurel’s story and take in the soulful measure of her words. As you journey inward, give yourself permission to just feel what you feel. Be aware of yourself and slowly start to engage your senses. As you cook, what do you smell? What do you taste? Describe what you see. Soon you’ll notice how what’s brewing in the kitchen may be brewing elsewhere, too.

People say that if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. So if you do come to a place of overwhelm, try practicing detachment from the situation. Let your healing evolve naturally as you reclaim your well-being. Learn to be gentle with yourself at all times, especially as you work through this book. Know that in both kitchens, whatever you create is for your highest and best healing.

    Be well,

    Tanya Wineland

    PREFACE

On October 30, 2009, inspiration for The Inner Kitchen began. This book is based on a true love story about two souls colliding after 27 years apart, on a journey that began during a chance meeting 36 years ago. When I started reconnecting with that soul after all those years, the very first thing I heard from him was, I have always loved you unconditionally. I was overcome and puzzled at the same time. Who could love me unconditionally? What does that
