Betsy Scott Fitzmeyer

The author of SEASON of the FLAME continues with her determination to inspire rather than depress her audience. Betsy Scott Fitzmeyer asserts that an artist can accomplish either, depending upon the will to champion good or the desire to further evil. In ARTHUR she strives to remain true to her resolve to uplift while at the same time acknowledging the harsher realities of human nature. Always inspired from her early years with tales of Arthur, it was an exciting adventure for Betsy to have the opportunity of going in search of the real Arthur in history. Quite early on in her studies, however, she discovered the nearly hopeless task of her endeavor. In any event, she stayed with what eventually became to her a labor of love and is grateful to the forces of heaven for spiriting her on. Betsy is currently working on two other novels, both featuring the respectful nods to her patron saint, the Archangel Michael, that her other books include.

For my late parents, Charles and Dorothy Scott,

and my late Scott and Lawton grandparents.

Betsy Fitzmeyer’s ARTHUR, is one of the best books I have read. I especially like her masterful use of history in connecting the Arthurian legend to the era just after the fall of the Roman Empire. Betsy’s work is excellent in its illumination of the heritage of Arthur. She does an exceptional job in depicting Arthur’s parents as having been of Roman nobility, and having being murdered by members of Germanic tribes, all of which aids in grounding the romantic Arthurian legend in real history. Betsy’s prose makes wonderful use of imagery throughout the entire book. Right from the start of the story she describes Arthur’s boyhood home in exquisite detail and in works it seamlessly into the tale of what made Arthur the man that he became. All in all, Betsy Fitzmeyer’s ARTHUR is absolutely the best account of theArthurian legend that I have ever read.

Arthur is a wonderful book that immediately thrusts you into the dark ages. You will join Arthur in his battle cry, as he fights the war of good versus evil. It evokes a range of emotions and leaves you uplifted. Good read.

For he shall give his angels charge over thee,

to keep thee in all thy ways.

    Psalm 91 v. 11, KJV

A music box waltz crept into her dream, becoming at once part of her dream as well as the awakening, the destroyer of a romantic reunion with her husband. One moment, Courtney Lawrence was swaying in the arms of her husband Shannon, and the next her eyelids were flicking open to time and place.

Lacy curtains danced in a soft breeze that bore the spicy scent of roses from the garden below the opened windows of her bedroom. A frown of disappointment creased her pretty face momentarily, her arms empty, her heart bereft. Her long fingers ran over her pillows, his pillows, and then reached to caress the beautiful night table beside her bed. Shannon had made all of the furniture in the room and throughout the townhouse, one of the oldest in Alexandria, Virginia.

But that was a very long time ago Courtney reminded herself, forcing the happy memories of their early marriage aside as she tossed off the covers, slipped into a robe and slippers, then padded down the hallway in the direction of the sprightly music.

On the way, Courtney glanced into the rooms of her twenty-year-old twins, Ryan and Kate, who were presently in college in California. During the night, while a thunderstorm raged, she had sprinted throughout the house, checking for leaks in the centuries old house. But all had been secure, excepting for a window well outside of the basement; an ongoing problem that Shannon would have to deal with, whenever he returned home, if indeed he ever would. And then she had looked into the rooms of her twins, running her fingers over their pictures on the walls, touching their pillows, smoothing their bedcovers, wishing they were home once again. And then she had looked in on six year old Kelly who had slept on, apparently undisturbed by the raging storm, but who nonetheless had awakened earlier than usual to thwart her mother’s sleep, Courtney thought, with a wry grin as she neared her little girl’s room.

Abruptly, Courtney slackened her pace becoming conscious of Kelly’s voice apparently carrying on a conversation, something that the fanciful little girl often did. Courtney smiled ruefully as she lightly knocked before pushing open the door.

Kelly was sitting up in her bed a lopsided smile spreading across her face as her mother entered.

Good morning, my sweetness, Courtney exclaimed, tongue in cheek, although I must say I want to throttle you for waking me at such an ungodly hour, she added, seizing the music box, and immediately silenced its cheery tune.

Sorry, Mama, Kelly replied, not looking sorry in the least, her rumpled reddish locks and freckled nose so endearingly recalling her father to mind that Courtney’s heart lurched.

So, what are you doing awake, my sweetheart, and with whom were you having such a lively conversation? Courtney rambled on, to ease the tightness of sudden sadness in her chest.

    My angels, Kelly answered.

Oh, yes, Courtney smiled, playing along. I forgot about your angels. Which one visited you this morning?

I told you before, Mommy, Kelly sighed, rolling her eyes, One angel has blue eyes and the other one has green.

And which one do I have to thank for jarring me out of my dreams this morning, my pet?

The one with green eyes, Kelly stated matter of factly, and then a smile split her freckled face. He told me that Daddy is coming home!

Honey, Courtney winced, her heart heavy, when I was a little girl and feeling lonely, I remember thinking that angels visited me, too. It’s only natural, and with your missing your Daddy so much, well maybe you dreamed…

It wasn’t a dream, Mommy, Kelly declared, her chin jutting out, my angel told me that my Daddy is coming home. And that isn’t all! We are going back to California for the summer.

Courtney, momentarily nonplussed, struggled not to laugh. She feigned a cough, hiding her smile of bemusement. Well, that’s very startling news, poppet, she responded, clearing her throat, but, now, I do think you and I should have breakfast. Let’s see which one of us can get washed and dressed the fastest. And if you win, I’ll treat you to breakfast on the way to your school.

Hooray! Kelly screeched, tossing off her covers, her angels forgotten in her
