Rita Gau

Rita Gau has been using affirmations for almost 20 years.  She has recorded them on tape for herself, has placed them in various places in her home, on her car’s steering wheel and at work, in order to expose herself to a new way of thinking about herself and her life.  Her main message is, “we have a choice of what we say to ourselves; by saying, affirming and nurturing statements to ourselves, we can heal inside and, therefore, be who we want to be and who we are meant to be.”   Besides finding gratification in writing, Rita loves to spend time outdoors, especially bicycling and walking.  She lives in Southern Arizona.

    Introduction

I believe it was around the time I was struggling with bulimia, that I heard about affirmations. I started to say them even though I didn’t believe them. I was desperate enough to hope that they might work. I started saying statements, like I love myself. I love my body. I stood in front of the mirror and looked myself in the eyes while affirming myself. After saying affirmations for anywhere from 10 to 15 years, I began to tire of them. Matter of fact, I could hardly say them anymore. I felt a block when I said them. They had helped to some degree, I’m sure, to move me forward on my spiritual journey, yet I felt like I was no longer getting out of them what I needed/wanted.
