Glossary
Consignment Store: A store that accepts merchandise from a consignor and agrees to try and sell the merchandise within a certain time frame. After the merchandise is sold the owner of the store splits the profit with the consignor. The split may vary 40% to 60% depending upon the store.
Thrift Store: A non-profit thrift store is a store that accepts donations. The proceeds usually benefit a worthy cause. A thrift store for profit usually purchases merchandise from charities in bulk & sells the merchandise for a profit.
Resale Store: A store that purchases merchandise outright for cash.
Handy Tips for Consignment & Thrift Shopping
1. Visit a wide variety of stores as often as you can. Merchandise is constantly changing therefore you never know what treasures you may find.
2. When you find a favorite store let the store owner know what type of items you may be seeking. Many stores offer a wish list for that special item
.
3. Sizes can be misleading, therefore try on clothing whenever possible.
4. Inspect all items carefully before purchasing.
5. If you like something, buy it. It may not be there next time.
6. Look for stores that offer bag sales, clearance racks, frequent shopper cards & other shopper incentives.
7. Some stores offer pick-up and closet audits for your convenience.
8. Be prepared to look around the entire store. You never know what you will discover.
9. Keep an open mind. When you set out on your shopping venture for one specific item, you may find some other item of interest.
10. Shop for secondhand merchandise online. It saves time and is convenient.
Handy Tips for Consigning & Donating Merchandise
1. Prepare a list of all the items you would like to consign & donate.
2. Use The Ultimate Consignment & Thrift Store Guide to locate the stores in which you would like to consign or donate merchandise.
3. When consigning merchandise, keep in mind items must be cleaned, in excellent condition & usually on hangers. Check with each store to see if they accept seasonal merchandise. Ask for a copy of the consignment contract which explains all the details. Make sure you fully understand the consignment policy & the amount you will receive when your item sells.
4. Once your items sell verify when & how you will receive payment.
5. When consigning merchandise, keep track of your time limit. After your consignment period is over, verify if items need to be picked-up.
6. Be patient. If items have not sold in one shop, try another one that may be more suitable for your merchandise.
7. Be realistic. Prices may vary depending upon the item and the demand for it. Designer clothing & accessories are usually in high demand.
8. When donating merchandise ask for a receipt for tax purposes. Check if pick-up is available for your convenience.
9. Please do not discard salvageable items. Many non-profit organizations worldwide are happy to receive donations. Items donated to these organizations help provide programs for those in need.
