    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Yoga classes and instructions began at FPC Seymour Johnson in January 2002 through the efforts of Alan Sug Sugar. Sug’s interest in yoga began in the early days of his sentence while serving time behind the fence at FCI Butner, Butner, North Carolina. Arriving at FPC Seymour Johnson and not finding an active Yoga Class, Sug went to work and received permission from the education department to get a class up and going. To render the maximum benefits for all participants, Sug started by drafting the objectives of the class, organizing instructions literature, selecting yoga exercises, organizing and slotting the selected exercises into the time allotted for each class session. Sug believed in, and experienced the benefits of yoga; made a personal commitment to the serious practice of yoga, and desired to share these experiences and benefits with others. Though serious about the class, all who have experienced yoga under the tutelage of Sug to date know a very positive underlying theme exists: have fun, enjoy life! Sug leaves the program in May 2004 and the organization and contributions to this booklet is his one last and lasting contribution to FPC Seymour Johnson Yoga. He will be missed but he will never be forgotten.

Many thanks go to Ezekiel Cross. Ezekiel, an instructor along with Sug at the FPC Seymour Johnson yoga classes, has patiently and tirelessly worked with inmates to expound the benefits of yoga; to instruct in the proper breathing techniques and the proper stances and poses. Ezekiel is a major contributor of this booklet and a master of yoga stances, poses, breathing techniques and meditations. Ezekiel enriches the classes with his quiet presences and work ethics, this work would be unfinished but for his contributions.

Although yoga is by no means a religion in and of itself, methods of meditations and achieving a state of meditation leads one to look inwardly and be more receptive to one’s conscience and spiritual being. Greg Cooke, a master of both the physical and the spiritual benefits that may be derived from the practice of yoga, has been a personal mentor to Sug in his quest to make yoga a rewarding part of life at FPC Seymour Johnson. Unknowingly, many who have participated in past yoga classes have benefited greatly from Greg’s mentoring of Sug. Greg
