Author

Beryl McMullen

Born in Birmingham, England and then moving to Canada at a young age, Beryl McMullen grew to have an immense love for poetry and writing. Her poetry was the voice to her thoughts as she expressed herself through verse. In her mind's eye, she professed it is never too late to learn and never too late to start, it is the state of mind and matter of will which allows one to take charge, time is just a gift. Enjoying life and doing what one loved every day was what mattered the most. Her fondness for animals was her next love and it is reflected through her poetry. She was an admired individual who had lived through the toughest of times bringing lots of wisdom and inspiration to others and for this she will be greatly missed but the memory of her beautiful words will be shared for generations to come.

    About Beryl McMullen

    Childhood

    Jennifer

I love the tiny precious thing

    How innocence mirrors her face

    In such sweet reflection

Of a young child’s inner grace.

And what love, truth and trust prevail

Eyes that meet yours in prayer?

For little joys; in anxious fears

    Wipe transient tears there!

How she’ll laugh, lift her little arms

Around your neck in their embrace

And with childlike charm print a kiss

Shedding love’s light on your face.

So, guide her through the tender years

Pour fresh hope along the way

    Fix purpose and understanding

For new dawns of another day.

    Beryl McMullen

    Sunny Boy

Sunny boy with fast moving feet

Breezes through the day like the wind

    Beating time playing fast

With his puppy as his friend.

    Beryl McMullen

    Fantasy

    Haiku

    Spirit of the night

    Dreams of fear and delight

    Quickly takes to flight.

    Beryl McMullen

    My Secret Garden

I went to my secret garden

    Strayed along the sheltered stream

From out of the shade stood a man

The one I had seen in my dreams

My love had the keys to my heart

And I knew his form and face

Whether he knew me I can’t recall

How did he find this meeting place?

In the moonlight our shadows grow

As we move our shadows follow

    Spreading darkly as they go

Like wings of a flying swallow

With our arms around each other

Our two shadows we can’t evade

Lost in love we come together

The union of two souls was made

Night now folded its wings at rest

And it’s time for us to part

    Passions embers burning still

In the secret garden of my heart!

    Beryl McMullen

    The Dance

Dance in the evening gardens neat

With haunting looks and naked feet

    While soft moonlight falling wet

On flowers moist with summer sweat

Granite statues stand stiff and wear

A silly smile and stony stare

    Above the stars twinkle silently

The wind in the trees a symphony

    A child with thoughts

    Girl is woman dances away.

    Beryl McMullen

    The Pearl

Gazed into a window of gold,

    Pearls and diamonds shining bright

There on a thread of gold

A perfect pearl in beauties sight

It was the perfect symmetry of love

My skin radiates its creamy gleam

Like the high moon in the sky above

Glows its round of soft moony light?

    A smooth milky translucent dream.

    Beryl McMullen

    Daydreaming

Hold the pearly shell to my ear

That murmurs the far off sea

    Like a precious jewel

    It’s carved curiously

    In the early morning sunlight

Picking up shells along the shore

To find one smooth and perfect

    Never tire of collecting more

As waves dash up against me

    Seeking one that’s rare

    Those with flaws have beauty

    Among the ordinaire

    Imperfect like you and me

Mystery of what led them to be?

    Each one unique in nature

    Is another treasure to see!

    Beryl McMullen

    Guiding Shadows

Don’t you know who I am?

Surely you do for I once knew you

    My spirit remembers yours

In another place at another time

Don’t you know who I am?

    I once breathed beside you

I knew you then - and you knew me

My name is written on granite stone

    This is not
