Robert Shinji Barlow

I have studied Japanese literature from the classics to contemporary works while attending the University of Washington. In my studies, I’ve dealt with a variety of genres in different eras in the originals and also in the translation works. After closing my business several years ago, I worked extensively translating into Japanese: African Folktales (Ghana), European Folktales, Okinawan Folktales, and am 1/3 of the way through translating my husband’s novel, The Grass Mausoleum. I have begun the first in a series of “Tails.” Currently, I am working on a travel journal. I contributed to a newsletter about Uchina-guchi (the Okinawan language) for a local Okinawan organization and also helped some businesses with translation work. In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, baking, decorating cakes, gardening, photography and playing the piano. Currently, I am living in Mountlake Terrace, Washington with my husband, Don, our youngest son, Robert, and with our five-year-old basset hound, Hanako.

    Introduction

My name is Yasumi, and I am a ten-year-old basset hound. I was given a Japanese girl’s name which means, peacefully beautiful referring to my easygoing disposition. I have a tricolor coat: black on my back, brown on my face and neck, and white around my neck, stomach and paws. My tail is brown and I have a small white spot on its tip, so that I can easily see it when I feel like chasing it. I have freckles on my nose and in the white area around my stomach as well. I have gorgeous brown eyes with natural black eyeliner circling them, and sometimes my mom calls me, Cleopatra-eyes, wishing that she had the same. The thin white stripe between my eyes extends to my ears and divides my face right and left; I look like I am wearing a pair of sunglasses. My hair is short and I have a very thin and fine undercoat. Not only does it shed when the weather changes, but it also sheds when I become nervous around strangers. Eventually, the nervousness will fade away when I see them repeatedly. I have never bitten any humans or dogs, nor have I a desire to bite one. But I will defend myself when necessary.

I have a very unique build with stocky short legs supporting my long body. The skin is loose and saggy, so I look sad to humans. Approximately nine-inch long ears droop down over my shoulders and are used to fan the scent off the ground as I hunt. As everyone knows, my nose is the most important organ and is useful—humans use me to hunt for prey in the woods. Having such a keen nose does not necessarily mean it is always good. Most likely, it gets me into trouble: for example, I can get lost easily by following my nose after discovering an interesting odor on the ground. Also, humans yell at me when I roll over a dead rat to get some odor from it, and they even get upset seeing me getting into a trashcan.

I am calm and get along with anyone who likes me. Due to my tame nature, I have a reputation for being a lazy dog which is a misconception. I am active and run around the house, or out of the house chasing animals, barking at humans… there is no limit to what I can do. Believe it or not, I can even perform a singing duet with my mom. Sometimes, I feel an urge to howl. Because I am such an active basset hound, my dad often says to my mom that, We got a defective basset hound.

One thing is certain; I am fixed to my own ideas and will not easily give up. Humans say, She is stubborn, but that is not what it is. When I am thinking about something, I totally concentrate on that, thus, I ignore other things.

My ancestors came from France a long time ago to settle in the land of freedom, America. Since, I was cared for by Americans who immigrated to this
