About this ebook

This book is about a journey in knowing Him. It is easy to forget what Christianity is about; there is an enemy of our souls who wants to make sure of that. The essence of all Christianity is to know Him who to know is life eternal. This book will start you on your personal journey in knowing Him in a way He desires for us to know Him. Eugene H. Peterson, describes this journey in Psalm 84:3: And how blessed all those in whom you live, whose lives become roads you travel; They wind through lonesome valleys, come upon brooks, discover cool springs and pools brimming with rain! God-traveled, these roads curve up the mountain, and at the last turn--Zion! God in full view!

I have thirty three years of professional experience which qualifies me to write this book. Seven of those years were spent as a pastor; thirteen years I served as a professor of theology and practical religion, eight of those thirteen years I was the chairman of the Theology Department. The remainder of the time I have been involved in private counseling practice, serving as an adjunct professor of Psychology, teaching correspondence and online courses in religion and psychology. I hold a Masters in Theology, a Masters in Marriage and Family Counseling, a Doctorate of Ministry, and two professional counseling licenses. My greatest qualification for writing this book is my personal relationship with my Heavenly Father, His Son, and the Holy Spirit. From this relationship comes a burning passion to share my understanding of the height and depth of the love that went to the point of death to provide for me a way back to eternal fellowship with them. Along with my wife, who also is a licensed therapist and one who has this fire burning within her, and another couple, we have formed a ministry called, “Knowing God Ministries.” We travel to wherever we are invited to present weekend seminars to share the treasure of knowledge we have discovered in the various names God calls Himself. We provide free study material to encourage people to study and make this relationship their own. Our web site is knowinggodministries.com; our sermons and materials can be downloaded for free.

This book is dedicated first to the One who stated, Father, the world has not known You… and then laid aside all He had with His Father and became one of His own creation to reveal His Father’s heart. Thank You, Lord Jesus. And second, I dedicate this book to one who has stood by my side and heard the same story and inspired me to write what I have heard; thank you, Reva.

    Introduction

I recently saw an unbelievable video on YouTube. A group of young sightseers were touring through an animal reserve in Africa. They spotted a herd of water buffalo being circled by a pride of lions. They caught the most remarkable scene on video. The lions startled the herd and sent them scurrying in a panic. There was a young calf cut off from its mother; several of the lions pounced on it. The calf struggled and fell down an embankment into the water of a small lake. The lions, clawing and biting at the calf, tried to drag the terrified calf back up the embankment. In the midst of the struggle, a huge crocodile sprung out of the water and locked its jaws on the hindquarters of the calf. The lions pulled one way and the crocodile the other; it was a titanic struggle. Then, all of a sudden, all got quiet. The lions looked behind them and saw the entire herd of water buffalo standing on the bank surrounding this mayhem. The herd immediately attacked. Lions literally flew in the air; huge buffaloes were pursuing and goring the lions. Meanwhile, the crocodile let go and slinked back into the dirty water. Miraculously, the calf staggered up the bank to the awaiting herd, apparently no worse for the struggle, and walked away with its rescuers, largely unscathed.

The struggle for our minds and hearts, and eventually our souls, is no less a vicious, titanic struggle. The enemy of our souls has us surrounded. The book of Revelation says the church, depicted as a woman, is in the midst of this battle. Chapter 12 portrays how the enemy of God’s people is described as a dragon, was cast down, the serpent of old who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him (vs. 6-9). What happened when they were cast down? We are warned, Woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has only a short time (vs. 12).

Are we left alone to combat this overpowering foe? No! Right in the middle of the description of the ejection of the Devil and his angels from heaven is a glorious promise: And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, ‘Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our god and the authority of His Christ have come….and they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even to death’ (vs.10–11).

This is a true story about my journey of being snatched from the jaws of the enemy, and the beginning of my discovery of knowing my heavenly Father. It is a personal adventure that is shaping my life. I use the present tense because the journey is still ongoing. It is not about arriving at some destination or coming to some final concept. This journey is a continual unfolding of wonder and excitement; yet, at times it is confusing and frustrating.

I once saw a picture in an art gallery that captured much of what I am experiencing. On a black background the artist painted a scene of a young man, angelic in appearance, sitting on a large stone, his elbow on his knee and his chin resting on his fist. He was totally fascinated by a small, brilliant beam of light suspended before him. The artist captured a look of awe, of curiosity and amazement, on the young man’s face as he was apparently attempting to understand what was appearing before him. I can so relate to that picture. At times, I feel just like that as I experience the majesty of my Father.

I am not writing to refute, to apologize to, or to combat anyone. I have no human enemies in mind. The adversary I have discovered is the distorted image I once had of my Father. My intention is to share with others how that distorted image has changed. Like the youth in the picture, I at times sit transfixed on the loveliness of who He is. I am not on a mission to reshape anyone’s theology; I am not here to jettison any group’s doctrine. My mission is to tell a story of what I have seen and how it has shaped my life. Much to my delight, those to whom I have told the story have responded by saying how it has impacted them and shaped their concept of who God is.

I often recall the experiences I had as a teacher of theology. My goal as I taught was to pass before the students what I had discovered about a person. I avoided taking them on a mental tour through the dusty, musty museum of time-worn doctrines. I was excited about a person; and I wanted to introduce them to the majesty of heaven. As I did, I would catch the look of wonderment in the eyes of those who saw a glimpse of Him. From time to time, one or two would leave the class obviously emotionally affected, tears in their eyes.

Pause for a moment and consider this scene. It came to the attention of a very wealthy, kind king that one of the villages in his territory had been attacked. The village was pillaged. Many of the citizens were wounded or killed. His archenemy was responsible for the atrocity. Leading his army, he pursued the scoundrel, and captured and punished his enemy, rendering him powerless. Surveying the impact the attack had on his subjects, the king felt compassion for them. The benevolent king loaded several wagons with all of the supplies the villagers needed to recover from the ruthless attack. Knowing they had suffered great loss, he included some incredible treasures to replace what was destroyed. As the caravan neared the village, some of the residents, misinterpreting the good intentions of the king, attacked the wagon drivers. They turned over the wagons, ravaged the contents, and left the goods and treasures strewn all over the ground. Many of the treasures were trampled into the mud and mixed with the debris, ruined. Yet, the greatest loss was that they never knew the love of their king.

Our heavenly Father emptied the treasure of paradise to bring healing and restoration to us who have been wounded and left to die. Rightly understood and accepted, the treasure God has sent will heal and restore that which was lost. However, through the artful lies of the Devil, this source of healing has been misunderstood and misinterpreted. The lies about our Father have caused us to turn away from the wonderful, healing message of God’s love for us. In our effort as theologians and pastors to clarify and make it simple, we have often complicated the gospel and made it seem of little value. Rather than illuminating the entire message, we end up hiding, distorting, and misconstruing the intentions of God; we never truly experience the love of the King. My intention is to rediscover the valuable treasures of the knowledge of God’s love, found in His Word.

It is quite fair to ask how I came upon this knowledge I am about to share; to whom I owe my ideas. I assure you I stand on the shoulders of the giants of faith who have traveled this path before me. What you are about to read is not new light. I am merely telling about the discovery of treasures which have been there all along. I express deep appreciation to those who have orally, or in written form, shared their experience with me. The One who makes it
