Wendy Swope
Wendy Swope is an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner with 10 years combined experience in Critical Care, Psychiatry and Family Practice. She is certified as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in the state of Idaho and has primarily practiced in the acute hospital setting. In 2002 Swope published Wild Idaho through Falcon Press which is an outdoor guide to all of the wild areas in the state. In 2006 she co-authored a chapter of Neurological Support in ACCCN Critical Care Nursing by Elsevier. This book is currently in it's second printing. Swope currently lives in Swan Valley, Idaho where she enjoys hiking and cross-country skiing. Having lived for a winter in a tipi in the forest outside of Pinedale, Wyoming (-40 below) she and her husband also know quite a lot of practical knowledge related to the outdoors.. They have five children and enjoy many adventures with them.

Electrolyte Replacement
Potassium Replacement Protocol
(normal = 3.5-5.1 meq/L)
Repeat potassium level
2 hours after the infusion is complete.
Correct as indicated above.
Magnesium Replacement Protocol
(normal = 1.6-2.3 mg/dL)
Corrected Serum Mg =
Mg x 0.42 + 0.05 (4 - albumin in g/dL)
Repeat serum Magnesium level
2 hours after infusion complete.
Phosphorus Replacement Protocol
(normal = 2.4-4.5 mg/dL)
3 mmol of potassium phosphate = 4.4 meq of potassium
• Pharmacy will mix NaPO4 or KPO4 in 250cc NS
• Use KPO4 if K is less than 4.0 mEq/L
• Use NaPO4 if K is greater than 4.0 mEq/L and Na is less than 145 mEq/L
• Infuse over 4 to 6 hours
• Repeat phosphorus level 6
