About this ebook

There will always be more questions than answers. Each new day brings new and sometimes more complicated questions. Help From The Hills is a collection of meditations on the nature of human living and the gift of grace for the challenges of the spiritual life. Each meditation presents a particular perspective from which the reader will gain insight into ancient and unyielding concerns, as well as hope for the future. Each chapter ends with a Spiritual Exercise intended as a medium for spiritual reflection and renewal. This book is an excellent resource for adult bible study groups and private devotions.

Ronald Ramsey provides a way of thinking about the complexities of life as a path to deeper understanding and spiritual growth. Help From The Hills offers spiritual guidance for those seeking the light of life, and helpful reminders of the love of God as revealed in Holy Scriptures for the redemption of humankind.

    Acknowledgements

This book is an attempt to articulate an authentic Christian voice within the increasingly complicated sphere of Christian dialogue. I hope I have succeeded. I am grateful for the many people who have listened patiently and considered thoughtfully my perspective on the substance of the gospel. This collection of meditations is one result of that process. I would like to express special appreciation to the following persons.

To my wife Jean, for her constant support and confidence in my capacity to inspire others.

To Dr. Eve Laubner, for her editing and proofreading skills. Her belief in my gifts as a writer and her encouragement continue to be sources of inspiration for me.

To my colleagues, the Reverend Katharine C. Black and the Reverend Karen Montagno, for their careful reading of this manuscript for errors and omissions and for their helpful suggestions. The content of this book has been greatly improved because of their participation in this project.

To those who have prayed for me and given me encouragement along the way, I shall always be eternally grateful.

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.

    Psalm 121:1-2, KJV

    Foreword

There will always be more questions than answers. Each new day brings new and sometimes more complicated questions. This book is not a book of answers. It is rather a collection of reflections on the challenges of human living and the nature of the spiritual life. Each meditation seeks to present only one perspective on a multi-dimensional issue. From this perspective, it is my hope that the reader will gain insight and, perhaps, new ways of viewing ancient and unyielding concerns.

The scriptures are restated in different versions in order to deepen the process of reflection. The introduction of new words and phrases serves to illumine the meaning of familiar passages. The repetition of these verses is intended to encourage the art of meditation and to heighten the awareness of God’s presence in the written word. The gift of silence is more keenly felt when we are forced to slow down, especially in our consideration of the deep things of life.

Each chapter ends with a spiritual exercise. While some benefit may be gained from the readings alone, I recommend that the reader complete each spiritual exercise before moving on to the next chapter. In this way, the reader enters into the struggle with each issue, not only as an observer, but also as a participant in the revelatory process. It is
