Digital Era - A step ahead of Industrial Era

    Introduction

Ancient Greek Philosopher Heraclitus once said, "The Only Thing That Is Constant Is Change." As a human, we have witnessed some major changes in the world that did not only revolutionise our society but paved the way for a thriving future. Agricultural, industrial and technological revolutions are the three major changes that laid the stone of the modern world.

The digital revolution, which is believed to be the latest change we have seen on this planet, often referred to as the third industrial revolution. Although industrial revolution invited dramatic changes in the process of handmade and machine-made production, digital revolution showed us the way of maximum production with minimum resource and effort.

Digital revolution brought some magical wands for us like the cell phone, fax machine, computer and the internet, which has become the most efficient medium of communication. The advent of the internet enabled us to send and receive information faster than ever before. If industrial revolution enabled us to gain expertise in engineering, digital revolution gave us the opportunity of being global as a business, organisation, and community or individual.

However, if we can imagine the modern world as a product, then it must be produced by industrial and digital revolutions. Running a business targeting the global market became easier with internet service as they revolutionised the entire communication system in the early 80s. Following the revolution of information and technology, businesses mostly in developed countries witnessed significant changes in productivity and performance. The confluence of revolutions occurred in industrial and information ages later benefited the whole world.

In the industrial age, we have witnessed the development of machines and technicalities and our passion and thirst to master in engineering helped us to change our society and economy. Standing in an age, where the advanced system of communication has made the way of operating a business or starting a new one easier than before, we can say that both industrial and digital revolutions have destined us to become what we are today and will continue to influence us in shaping up our world.

The Contribution of Industrial Age and Information Age

We have already witnessed and learned about how the industrial and digital revolutions have shaped the socioeconomic structure of the world. We have seen how the rapid development of industrial sector nourished the world economy and how the emergence of information technology made the world small for us with the advanced communication system. Here, we will discuss what happened in the industrial and information ages and how those discoveries and development influenced us.

The Industrial Age- Contribution to the Modern World

The seeds of industrial revolution germinated in the middle of 18th century in Great Britain that later spread across entire Europe and other parts of the world. Newly invented power-driven machines started taking the place of hand tools. We have witnessed the emergence of the steam engine that subsequently was altered with fuel-powered and electric engines.

Rapid development in the sector of information and technology has helped 1st world countries to slowly move away from manufacturing and lean more towards developing digital and information technology-based products and services. However, although the contribution of the industrial age in shaping up our modern society and economy is huge and immeasurable, it is still a debatable question whether we have forgotten and moved away from the golden era of industrial revolution and embraced the new and advanced age of information.

The Information Age- Advanced Information Technology

We can call it an age of the computer, internet or advanced media. We have seen how the industrial revolution changed our social and economic structure centuries ago. However, today, we are going through a phase of transmission where the structure of our economy is becoming more information technology-centric.

The information age laid the foundation for a knowledge-based society. Though the continuous development of latest technology has made it difficult to describe the meaning and essence of the information age, the efficacy and usability of new technology and advanced devices made everything including the methods of communication easy for us.

Advancement in the sector of information technology has helped us to form a high-tech global economy. The computer and internet are among the greatest inventions of humanity. They not only made the process of communication fast and easy but also paved the way for technological, social and economic development across the world.

Comparison between Industrial Age and Information Age

Our forefathers have revolutionised the world by inventing new technologies and manufacturing processes hundreds of years ago. The pace of development and our hunger for success have provided us with a stable and progressive socioeconomic structure. However, our passion and enthusiasm towards latest technological development gifted us a magical wand called information technology. Here, we will stress on the key differences between the industrial age and the information age

Key Differences between the Two Ages

It is an undeniable fact that industrial revolution created millions of job vacancies across the world at that time. Every manufacturing unit could employ hundreds of thousands of workers. The process helped many European countries to establish a progressive economy.

On the other hand, the foundation stone of information age was laid nearly 60 years ago, and we are quite familiar with the fact that how global IT giants like Google and Microsoft have established themselves as some of the wealthiest business organisations in the world.

In the industrial age, schools tend to produce students who could become good workers both physically and mentally. In the information age, we need students who can solve problems. Today, we want students who can think freely and create something new.

The industrial revolution helped us to utilise the mechanical power rather than muscle power. It has helped labour from getting rid of wear and tear. Thus it had increased the quality of life. The information age, on the other hand, helped us to expand our reach to access or provide important information for different purposes.

The menace of poverty had engulfed the world on several occasions, and history suggests that industrial revolution brought the solution against it and managed to provide jobs to more than half of poverty-ridden people across Europe. Unemployment remains a major concern, and we may turn back to the pre-industrial revolution era if the digital revolution did not take place. Millions of people are working for information technology-related businesses across the world.

The development in manufacturing sector invited a ghoul called pollution, as tons of wastes were disposed of in poorer neighbourhoods and rivers. The quantity of wastes from information technology industry is nominal, and they do not pose any threat to our environment.

Similarities between Industrial and Information Age

We know that both industrial and digital revolutions have contributions to the world we are living in today. Everything, from driving a supercar to sharing our latest photographs on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and many others, we have gained countless benefits from the industrial and information age.

Though we have made a long distance since the time of great industrial revolution that took place in Europe, it seems the technological development in the sector of information and communication in the modern era would not be possible without it. We have seen the invention of machines, factories, vehicles, and electricity in the industrial age. On the other hand, the digital revolution in the age of information gave us the computer, internet, mobile phones, social media platforms and a fast and convenient way of communication. Thus, here we can see that both the ages encouraged innovation and creativity.

    Invasion Made Life Easy

If you look at the pre-industrial revolution era, you will find that people would struggle to get food, shelter, and clothes in the cities and suburban areas. The industrial revolution that emerged from the soil of Great Britain first created job opportunities for city dwellers and poverty-stricken commoners. This has brought a magical change not only in the manufacturing sector but also in the social and economic structure.

In similar ways, the introduction of the computer in the world of information and technology made many tasks easier for us. Likewise, the internet has established itself as a great medium of communication. Today, we need computer professionals and skilled workforce that can fulfil the demand of billions of internet users across the world.

If we need talk about our achievements in both industrial and information ages, we should discuss the issues like employment generation, because people have seen rapid employment generation in both the eras. If the industrial revolution helped societies to eliminate poverty, we have seen the information technology industry to employ millions. Thus, now we can say that both the revolutions have similarities if we talk about their contribution to the development of our social and economic structure.

    Conclusion

Agricultural revolution was probably the first revolution in our civilised world where people learned the art of farming and eliminated food deficit. Industrial revolution came next and changed our social, economic structure by bringing efficiency in the manufacturing process. This revolution was a boom for the world economy and paved the way for a prosperous future for the next generation.

Similarly, a revolution in the industry of information and technology has transformed our analogue society and economy into digital ones. The industrial revolution gave us soft and big machines, the base of high-end mechanical engineering and infrastructural development, steam engine, fuel-powered engine, and electricity. However, the gifts of the digital revolution are quite different than what our ancestors had presented us years ago.

The industrial revolution that rose from the soil of Great Britain in the middle of the 18th century enabled the business class to dream about mass production and rapid business expansion with the help of low manufacturing cost and easily available workforce. Likewise, for the labour class, it was a golden opportunity to earn money and live a quality life.

On the other hand, a revolution in the information and technology has provided an easily accessible platform where anyone can start a business and generate employment. Even a few individuals, who started a one-person business, turned it into a billion-dollar company within a few years. This is the real advantage of the digital revolution that does not only give people technology and tools to make the process of communication easier but pave the way for establishing billion-dollar companies.

Though people from labour class availed food, shelter and quality life in the age of industrial revolution, it was very difficult for a commoner to start a business and dream about becoming a millionaire. In comparison, in the age of information and technology, an individual with proper knowledge and skill enjoys the power to break the barrier and achieve success even in the crowd of billions.

    Chapter Two

Brief understanding of old Commerce and E-commerce

The idea of traditional commerce is the basic commercial activity for purchasing goods or services which was the only medium of transaction in the early days. It requires a traditional setting and a few other things to be successful. A customer must visit the marketplace to purchase the goods or services in traditional commerce. After verifying the quality of those products or services, the customers have to pay the amount, and this is how traditional commerce works.

On the other hand, e-commerce has emerged as the new and easier way of conducting business in this digital age. The emergence of the internet has modified several technologies, and it has opened up a platform with numerous opportunities. The idea of trade and commerce is affected by the technological advancement led by the internet, and it followed the path of progress with the advanced tools of the internet. The basic concept of e-commerce is to build a platform where commercial activities are conducted through an easy and reliable process. E-commerce depends on the internet to connect with its consumers whereas people have to go to a particular place for various commercial activities.

It is a must to admit that the internet has changed the entire idea of commercial activities in the 21st century.  The market has expanded beyond the geographical borders, and a vast platform is gradually emerging. In spite of numerous advantages and easiness, many people still rely on the traditional commerce, and they say e-commerce comes with numerous risks.

Just like two sides of a coin, everything around us has its positive and negative outcomes. Similarly, e-commerce and traditional commerce have many advantages and disadvantages, and we must study the difference to understand their nature. The chapter will highlight the ideas of traditional commerce and e-commerce that will help us comprehend the differences and advantages at the same time.

    Definition of Traditional Commerce

If someone asks the definition of traditional commerce (aka offline marketing), it is hard to describe with proper classification. The idea of traditional commerce lies in the exchange of services or goods between two people in a face-to-face arrangement. We have previously discussed that traditional commerce is the olden mode of exchanging services and goods, and people have to depend on the traditional system to meet their daily requirements. The consumer has to visit a particular place to get the product, and he/she can collect it by paying for the product.

Traditional commerce is the business that comes with various activities that accelerates or enhances the trade. The
