Intro
Goethe scrisse le Elegie Romane a Weimar fra il 1788 e il 1790, dopo il ritorno da un viaggio in Italia. Il contenuto fa supporre che il poeta abbia vissuto a Roma un’intesa storia d’amore. Questa edizione, tradotta da Luigi Pirandello, riporta un ritratto dell’autore di Ugo Fleres.

Quando a la boreal nebbia che stese,
lunga stagion, sui miei più caldi amori
sua grigia notte, ai nordici rigori
volsi le spalle, e alfin del mio paese
il chiaro ciel rividi e gli splendori,
nel sorriso d’April, diletto mese;
da la dolcezza che nel cor mi scese
sbocciâr gli affetti, come tanti fiori.
E Roma salutai con la possente
voce del Vate, che oblio più non teme,
teco volgendo l’Elegia ridente.
Ugo, e i nostri pensier con insueta
rispondenza rifletteano insieme
i giocondi fantasmi del Poeta

Ditemi, o pietre! parlatemi, eccelsi palagi!
Date una voce, o vie! Né tu ti scuoti, o genio?
Si, qui un’anima ha tutto, fra queste divine tue mura,
Eterna Roma! tace sol per me tutto ancora.
Oh, chi sa bisbigliarmi a quale finestra la Bella,
Che l’arder mio ristori, scorger io debba un giorno?
