About this ebook

Freed by seismic activity, fireworms stream out of the vents and lava pools of the volcano and head for the surface.

With a volcano about to erupt and the rest of his team missing or dead, volcanologist Mags Lewis is following protocol and wondering how he'll get out of this mess. His boss at the USGS disagrees with his prediction of an eruption and, talk about bad timing, the ex-fiancé he hasn't seen in over a year lands on the island with a group of biology students. It's hard to know what poses the greatest threat.

If you're a fan a creature stories, you already know that sometimes the smallest creature can pose the greatest threat.

Jo Carey

Jo Carey grew up in the Midwest but her curiosity and gypsy-spirit has kept her on the move. She's lived in eight US states and spent three years living in Ireland. She has always loved creature movies, so creatures and bugs often show up in her books. Jo, a former information security compliance guru, writes fast-paced, character-driven stories in a variety of genres from medical thrillers to space operas and cozy mysteries. Her novels are filled with humor, romance, and sometimes creatures or aliens, or maybe even all of the above. She often builds her stories around a strong female lead character surrounded by plenty of hunky male heroes. Jo's been under fire on a golf course and climbed out the roof of an elevator in the Netherlands. Life hasn't been boring. Now residing in Texas, setting often plays a huge role in her stories. Jo was intrigued by the League of Planetary Systems, a world her husband, Frank, created for his science fiction books, and she now writes mysteries and other types of tales sets in that world. Jo was bitten by a cat, a fire ant, and a snake, before succumbing to the bite of the writing bug.

    Volcano Terror - Jo Carey

    CHAPTER ONE

Brandon, get your ass in here, Dr. Lewis yelled. He was looking at his computer screen, and he wasn't happy. When his young assistant didn't appear, he yelled again. "I swear to God, Brandon you'd better be dead. Where the hell can he be? There's nowhere to go, he thought to himself.

After a few minutes, when Brandon still hadn't appeared, Dr. Lewis walked down the hall and pounded on the door of Brandon's room. If you aren't paralyzed, you'd better open this door right now.

Hey, what's up Dr. Lewis? Is the big one imminent?

He turned to see a bare-chested Brandon sticking his head out of the door behind him. The door of the room that belonged to Lisa, the third member of their happy little play group.

Shit, Dr. Lewis said. This is not a good idea. Meeting in five minutes. Clothing not optional.

He hated being in charge of anything or anyone. That's one of the reasons he ended up stuck in this godforsaken place. He was in charge but, with only his two young colleagues, it should have been easier. He tipped up the coffee pot, and the dark sludge slid into his cup.

His two colleagues appeared looking irritated and disheveled but unreasonably satisfied. He wondered if he'd ever been that young.  You two need to remember why we're here?

Why is that exactly? Brandon asked.

You're here because you're a screwup who knows less about volcanos than the guy that bakes chocolate lava cake. You both know the routine. Each of us takes an eight-hour shift on duty followed by eight hours as support then an eight-hour rest period. If the person on duty needs help, they call the support person. Brandon, you were too busy entertaining Lisa to respond.

Who did you piss off to get this assignment anyway? Lisa asked.

I have no idea, Dr. Lewis said. That wasn't really true. He knew exactly who he pissed off that led to him being assigned to monitor a volcano on an uninhabited island in the south pacific.

Was there a reason you called me? Brandon asked. Or do you just want to make sure we're all as bitter and disillusioned as you are?

Maybe you'd make a better therapist than a volcanologist, Dr. Lewis suggested. I called you because monitor six is off line again.

And you want me to climb down into that cave and fix it.

Maybe you're smarter than I gave you credit for, Dr. Lewis said. Yeah. We need that sensor back on line. It's been reading elevated temps all week.

Brandon shook his head. It's sitting beside a magma pool, it makes sense that it gets a little warm.

I'm not going to argue. Go fix the damn sensor.

Come on, Brandon. I'll go with you, Lisa said.

This isn't a field trip. I need that sensor fixed.

You know the rules, Doc. There have to be two of us if we're going into the caldera.

Now you decide to follow the rules. Great, Dr. Lewis said. Get your gear and go. I need that sensor on line.

Brandon and Lisa were happy for the chance to escape the confines of the small research station and their irritating boss. They dressed for the hike and gathered their gear.

Don't have too much fun out there. Remember, this will be our last night alone on the island for a while, Dr. Lewis said. Get back here in time to clean up and prep the rooms for our guests.

After his two young colleagues left, he pulled the latest reports from the monitors on Gulampar. The reports were troubling. Something was happening in the mountain. He could sense it. After starting a simulation running, he made a fresh pot of coffee and filled his cup. It figures. Those damn students are going to show up just when things get interesting around here, he thought.

    CHAPTER TWO

Any questions? Professor Clark asked. I'll meet you all at the airport tomorrow morning. Don't be late, and don't forget your passports.

The students that were going on this field trip with Dr. Clark
