About this ebook
Companion Cookbook to A Slice of Life by Margaret Lake
This cookbook is not for the faint of heart. These recipes were passed down from grandmothers to mothers to daughters and sons. They are not guaranteed gluten-free, salt-free and definitely not fat free or even low fat.
I can tell you having taste-tested the recipes myself (and made some adjustments from the original recipes given to me by friends and family), I found them all to be delicious. I don't eat spicy and other people had to taste test those recipes but that's me. You'll have to try them for yourself.
Enjoy!
Margaret Lake
Margaret Lake was born in New Jersey, but moved to Florida in her early teens and has lived there ever since. Reading has been her favorite activity since she was ten years old. Even after purchasing a Kindle, she still had seven large bookcases filled with paper books. It took years for her to part with the majority of them. Her other passion is history, especially English History, dating from when she first read "Katherine" by Anya Seton. When the inspiration came to write her first novel, she naturally gravitated to the Wars of the Roses because of that book. Her favorite author is Susan Howatch, her favorite book is "Outlander" and her favorite series is Harry Potter. She led a Harry Potter book club at the elementary school and helped with the chess club at both the elementary and high schools. Margaret rescued a nine-year old Jack Russell Terrier named Angelo who passed at the age of 15 on December 3, 2017. Now she has Mikey, a teeny-tiny two year old chihuahua mix (actually 50% chihuahua, 25% miniature poodle, 12.5% maltese and 12.5% terrier according to his DNA), adopted from the Humane Society on March 7, 2018. Mikey has gone a long way toward filling the empty space in her heart left by the loss of Angelo.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
––––––––
Many thanks to all my friends and family who contributed to this book. Special thanks go to my cousin, Chef Joe D’Agostino, who inspired me to finally write it and contributed several recipes of his own. Also, special thanks to my friend Susan who graciously lent me her grandmother’s box of recipes. Without all of you, this cookbook would never have been written.

INTRODUCTION
Since I first published A Slice of Life in 2012, I have received many requests for the cookbook written by Grace Coulter, the heroine of the story. Many have also said they would like to ride on Hank’s bus, but, I’m sorry to say, that last request is way out of my league.
However, a chance conversation with my cousin, Chef Joe, finally brought the idea of the cookbook within reach. I said, "You provide the recipes and I’ll provide the (fictional) character bios." I already know from personal experience that Joe is a wonderful chef and I’m happy that he was willing to collaborate with me in bringing Coulter’s A Slice of Life Cookbook into the real world. In addition to the recipes provided by Chef Joe, I have been gathering recipes from friends and family as well as their parents and grandparents. I’ve even contributed a few myself.

For those of you who haven’t read A Slice of Life, here is what it’s all about.
Grace Coulter has been hiding in the kitchen of her family restaurant since she was eight years old. That’s when the name-calling began. Stretch, skinny-minny, boy in girl’s clothes, all because of the slender height that had her towering over even the tallest boys in the class.
Now, nearly thirty years later, Grace is head chef of the failing restaurant and still hiding in the kitchen. Like many businesses during the current recession, Coulter’s may have to start laying off employees or even close. But Grace has a plan to save the restaurant and the people she’s known all her life; a plan that will force her to go out into the world and face her fears.
And the sequel, a short and sweet Christmas story featuring Rosalie and Michael.
A Slice of Life Christmas
It’s Christmas and there are wedding bells ringing around Coulter’s Restaurant as they prepare to celebrate Rosalie and Michael’s wedding. But the bride is hiding something, a secret that she won’t even share with her fiancé, and that secret has Rosalie calling off the wedding. Can Grace, her best friend, intervene in time to save Rosalie from making the biggest mistake of her life?
I thought you would also like to read the blog post written by Grace Coulter to launch her cookbook. It’s about her parents, Evie and Keith, how they met, and the beginning of Coulter’s Restaurant.
My name is Grace Evelyn Coulter and I am 37 years old. My parents are Evie and Keith Coulter, and they founded Coulter's Restaurant over forty years ago.
