      Chapter One

      For Lucy Cramer, life had always been like one would expect to see on one of those television shows that came on between the hours of seven and nine. Perfection with a smile was how others would say they perceived the tall brunette, with her bright smile and eyes so blue they could only be compared to the most flawless of skies. She ’ d been born into one of the most affluent families in Connecticut but she tried her best to not present herself as stuck up or smarmy. Her heart of gold was her most treasured asset although many who saw her might have said it was what was on the outside of her heart that they admired most. Lucy had been blessed with the kind of body that could stop time itself if used properly and even though she knew what her perky breasts and tight, toned backside did to the male population in general, she only had eyes for Brandon Lancaster.

      Lucy and Brandon attended the most prestigious college in the country and when she was a lost and wandering freshman, the two of them met at a mixer in Frasier Hall and had been inseparable ever since. For Brandon, Lucy ’ s smile was the light of the party, shining brighter than any luminescence he ’ d seen but Brandon ’ s deep, brown eyes pulled Lucy to him like a beacon in the night. He couldn ’ t imagine his life without her and he hoped that one day the two would marry but they ’ d not spoken of such things. Brandon knew that Lucy had aversions to marriage since her parents got divorced and she believed that if they couldn ’ t make it work, then it was useless for her to even try. Brandon desperately wanted the picture perfect life with a wife, kids and a dog but Lucy was afraid that in the end, she would lose it all anyway, so there was no point in trying. Lucy ’ s parents divorced when she was in middle school and she had remained with her father while her mother left to start her new life in Paris with Jean Pierre, the man with whom she ’ d had a long-time affair before finally leaving Jackson Cramer.

      Lucy had never fully forgiven her mother for what she did to their family and barely kept in touch with Beverly Miller Cramer DuBois since she abandoned her. She was given the choice to come to Paris but there was no way that Lucy was going to leave her father and friends behind, especially when it was her mother causing everyone such heartache. She hated her for what she ’ d done and for years, she would only correspond via email and text but recently, she ’ d added phone calls to her repertoire. Perhaps, she could work up to video chat one day but Lucy didn ’ t really have the desire to look at Beverly just yet. It had only been a few years and she needed time to work up to looking at her cheating face. She ’ d seen her on Christmas and a few times during the summer here and there but Lucy would prefer if they kept things as basic as possible. Her father, on the other hand, was one of her best friends and they couldn ’ t have a better relationship if they tried. She loved him more than anything and there was nothing that she wouldn ’ t tell him if he asked but he tried to give his only daughter as much of her privacy as possible. There was only so much a father needed to know about his adult child. He knew that she was on the dean ’ s list and had a bright future ahead of herself and that she was more than capable of making well-planned and intellectual decisions. He ’ d raised her well and
