Few would argue that many challenges face The United Methodist Church. But what are the core issues and concerns, the ones that must be addressed if the church is to follow God’s leading into the future? Laying aside what can be merely tweaked or adjusted, what must the UMC “reset” about itself? Lovett Weems, one of the most highly-respected interpreters of contemporary United Methodism, suggests that we start with the following:

- If the percentage of married couples with young children has declined by half since the 1950s, why is that still the group we focus on reaching?
- Why are so many mid-sized churches on their way to becoming small-membership congregations?

Lovett H. Weems Jr. is distinguished professor of church leadership and director of the Lewis Center for Church Leadership at WesleyTheological Seminary in Washington, D.C. He came to this position in 2003 after 18 years as president of Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Missouri. A native of Mississippi, Dr. Weems is a graduate of Millsaps College; Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University; and Wesley Theological Seminary. The author of several books published by Abingdon Press, his most recent includes Bearing Fruit: Ministry with Real Results (with Tom Berlin) and a revised edition of his classic, Church Leadership: Vision, Team, Culture, and Integrity. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I was raised as a Methodist and became an atheist as a result. I do have some lingering interest in the body, and when a friend who is a pillar of the church I left told me that the Methodists are in a ferment of reinvention, I decided to read up on it. Methodism, like most of the "mainline" Protestant churches has been declining ever since the 1960's.I thought, as such things go, this was a very readable and interesting report with a lot of practical suggestions on administrative matters. The one thing that surprises me is that the issue of increasing membership comes last in the report. Nothing else matters if the Methodists cannot build, or at least retain, their membership. I don't think that Weems really comes to grips with what can be done to make the denomination more attractive. I am, perhaps, somewhat prejudiced, being an ex-Methodist, and I probably couldn't offer much advice since I cannot think of anything that would bring me back to the fold.First and foremost, however, I think that the Methodists need to focus the education of its children. At least they have these children as an audience. My Sunday School training chiefly worked to alienate me from the church. I was unable, for example, to find someone who could and would explain the Trinity. Yes, I know it's the Father-Son-and-Holy-Ghost, but what does that mean? How do they relate to one another. After considering the matter on my own, I decided that they were three completely separate individuals, or why else would Jesus pray to himself in the garden of Gethsemane? (Basically Arianism declared heresy in the 4th century.) During my exit interview at eighteen, when I was finally deemed significant enough to speak to the main minister, he explained that they were all one individual who assumes different masks. (He didn't explain the prayers in Gethsemane.) Significantly, there was an embarrassed silence when I asked what it meant to be a Methodist. Later that year, I was thrilled to learn, from the historical notes in a novel about the Empress Theodora, that my image of Jesus Christ (Monophysitism was declared heresy around the 6th century.) Fortunately, they don't still burn heretics. The minister who was supposed to be dealing with us children answered every question with a question. From him, I learned great sympathy for the Athenians who executed Socrates. I realize that Methodists don't want to get too bogged down in minor doctrinal quarrels, but if you teach your children nothing, they'll find somebody and something else.Of course, it has been a long time since I was in Sunday School, so maybe it has been vastly improved, but the drain on membership continues. Until the drain on membership ends, everything else is arranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

Warren Pittman introduced me once as a product of the church.
When I was in high school, Warren was pastor in the Mississippi county-seat town where the school was located, and later, when I was a pastor, he was my district superintendent. My home church was part of a three-point charge out in the country, where I lived. Warren understood that for generations of youth whose worlds were very circumscribed by conventional standards, the church opened new worlds of ideas and opportunities.
I am deeply indebted to The United Methodist Church and proud of its monumental achievements, including those coming in the last generation, even amid numerical decline. The elimination of the Central Jurisdiction as a condition for union in 1968 opened a new chapter in the mixed history of race in the church. Only those most affected by this decision can appreciate the price paid by many to implement this historic action. Similarly, a generation of clergywomen has opened doors for a more inclusive and widespread place for all those called to ordained ministry. The church has been a pacesetter for society in more inclusive language. The ranks of top leadership positions have become far more diverse. Grassroots mission and spiritual formation initiatives have engaged thousands in expanding their discipleship horizons. Efforts to relieve suffering around the world have been exemplary. Thousands of lives have been touched in ways impossible to imagine were it not for The United Methodist Church.
So I write as a deeply grateful and proud product of the church with hope for a future that presents great challenges.
I also write out of the pragmatic tradition of our heritage. An example is the Christmas Conference of 1784 that, as Russell Richey notes, established the precedent for the church's practice of shaping polity and policy guided by little in the way of biblical, theological, or other warrant.
¹ Biblical, theological, and historical considerations matter greatly to me and have always been the foundation of my work; in this book, I put the focus on the practical manifestations of those commitments.
This book is for hopeful people yearning for the unfolding of God's new vision for the United Methodist witness in the United States. It is not a book about death, fear, or denominational survival, except to the extent that leaders ignore the signs of the times. God's work will move forward through the church universal with or without The United Methodist Church; but the distinctive Wesleyan witness in the United States represented by The United Methodist Church will be a part of God's work only through a closer alignment both to God and to the people in our midst.
I am fortunate to have the opportunity to work with people from every part of the denomination. I am certain we have much to learn from one another, whatever our callings within our church, and this book grows out of the generous gifts and wisdom shared by so many through the years. Its recommendations reflect the highest regard for all constituencies.
There will be much here for everyone both to like and to dislike. Focus on what you find worthy and useful, and the weaker ideas will fall away. It is my prayer that the conversation begun in these pages will continue in many corners of The United Methodist Church and thus bring us closer to that vision to which God is calling us in the days ahead.

The year 1964 began as just another very good year for two of the venerable powerhouses of the twentieth century—the New York Yankees and The Methodist Church.
In each of their realms, the Yankees and the Methodists dominated the first half of the twentieth century. Year after year they were the major forces in the respective worlds of professional baseball and American Protestantism.
As the first of the baby boomers anticipated their high school graduation in the spring, the Yankees looked toward another round of spring training in Florida, and the Methodists prepared for their quadrennial General Conference in Pittsburgh. While baby boomers were ready to change the world based on their superior numbers and confidence, the Yankees and Methodists just wanted to stay as good as we are
because, by conventional measures, they both had been very good for decades.
But things had not always been so good for either the Yankees or the Methodists.
