Charles Dickens (February 7, 1812 to June 9, 1870) was an influential and prolific British novelist, journalist, and social commentator during the Victorian era.
He wrote such classic and beloved novels as A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations.
His stark portrayals of the treatment of the poor in 19th century England helped to bring about much needed societal reform.
His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the 20th century Dickens was recognized as a literary genius. His novels and short stories enjoy lasting popularity.
Dickens wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles.
