About this ebook

3rd Multinational Space Marine brigade is diverted after a peacekeeping mission to a prospective colony planet. They are given an exploration and infrastructure building mission. Not a mission that a combat brigade is trained to accomplish.
The uninhabited planet they are sent to doesn't remain undiscovered for long, an alien military force lands.
Corporal Abram always had a problem with his curiosity. He is volunteered to set up a FOP near the alien camp. If he lives long enough, maybe he'll becomes part of history. Who is cannon-fodder, or is there another plan?
Also members of a history class, and their path from high school to war. How many teenagers survive?

Stephen Brandon

I've loved westerns and science fiction since I picked up my first book at the public library. I've been writing on my computer for years. I never planned on any of my stories being published, just to be read by myself, family, and friends. The base journal is on forty spreadsheets with links to about a thousand files of short one day paragraphs plus other stories. {My claim to fame, written by someone else. Thanks.} "As an earthbound retiree, Stephen writes mostly science fiction and short stories. He is a voracious reader and has written for a few years, publishing his stories on Smashwords."

    Chapter 1 History Class

    1st day

Good morning, I'm Professor Smith. This elective course on the history of Contact, and will cover material you've already learned, plus a dive into some of the hero's that you may have seen statues of. After today's class, any of you that don't want to continue, report to the guidance counselor and get another elective. I don't have the time or patience to mollycoddle anyone that doesn't have the desire to learn. As high school seniors, you will be expected to, no--I demand that you dig into all the reference material I give you as assignments. You will know more about several subjects in the next eight weeks than you now think possible. As a veteran I pity those that refuse to learn and adapt. Enough said, any wimps that want to leave now. I have a dozen withdrawal slips here already stamped. OK, report to the guidance counselor, you'll get a chance at a challenging class like basket weaving. Now get the hell out of my classroom.

"Now the rest of you get out a pen and paper, Yes I said paper! What you learn here borders on classified information and will be considered heresy by many. You will, safeguard your notes and commit the classroom information to memory. The use of your tablets and home computers for research is allowed. Any more wimps want to bail out now? No?

The first indication that something new was up was when Admiral Jenkins played the following shipboard announcement.

Pushing a button on his tablet, everyone heard: Attention all personnel of the 3rd Brigade of United World Government Space Marines, this is Admiral Jenkins. Headquarters and I congratulate you on the rescue mission. However, due to new developments, this unit is being diverted to a planet the exploration scouts just located. It is uninhabited and meets all the requirements for colonization. The UWG made the decision to divert this brigade and an Army engineering brigade to the planet. Your mission will be exploration, building a spaceport, and roads from the spaceport to the coast. This will also include classification of plant life, animal life, and elimination of most of the major predators to make it safer for the arriving colonist. The ETA for the colony ship is three years. Your Colonel and I realize this is not the R&R you were expecting. As a bonus, any member of the advance military force that wants, may have first pick of terrain for their own personal use and ownership. Dependents and family will be transported at no cost on the colony ship as soon as it is outfitted. Company briefings will start tomorrow. That is all.

Turning off his recorder, he could hear the students the whispering.

"Silence!, that recording is not classified, but you'll have to dig deep to find it. What it doesn't tell is the fact that the exploration branch of the Earth combined military services had already located indications of not one, but two alien species. What you won't find is the 322 after action reports about alien ships found with battle damage, nor the destroyed military outpost. Those sneaky bastards managed to even capture a few wounded survivors. Two of the Cradlems survived and were put in a repaired shuttle and sent back to one of their military outpost as a good will gesture. The three Therosians immediately attacked the doctors attempting to save their lives and had to be put down. This left HQ on Earth with an option. Another two years of exploration turned up this planet and the UWG Space Marine 3rd brigade returning from a peacekeeping mission was unlucky enough to be in position to be used as cannon fodder. It was an attempt at peaceful contact. The fleet MI and brigade commander were the only two on-site that knew the proposed plan. Later I'll show you the hard copy delivered to the Cradlems.

"The rest of this course gets bloody. We've got ten minutes of class time left. Any of you want out now? You'll sign a nondisclosure document, and be under military secrecy penalties if you disclose any of this information beyond today's class. Come to my desk, one at a time, and pick the document you want to sign, either the nondisclosure and withdrawal slip, or acceptance packet for this class.

Oh, almost forgot to inform you. Anyone that participates in this class volunteers to join the 3rd brigade. I know you've all been told that this brigade was honorably retired, but it wasn't.

    2nd day

"Everyone grab a seat. Yesterday I told you that you only had that class to withdraw from this course. Each of your parents were briefed yesterday before you got home from school. I know that most of you talked to your parents last night
