I stared at myself in the mirror and frowned. I looked professional and stuffy, both things I usually avoided at all costs. I didn’t want to take the job as an administrative assistant at Coleman Industries. I wanted to be an anthropologist and lose myself in research and study. I had just graduated with my bachelor’s degree in anthropology with a minor in sociology only to discover that I couldn’t find a job without a graduate degree. Of course, I couldn’t afford grad school without a job, hence the boring skirt and blouse ensemble.

When the temp agency contacted me a day after I had put in my application with an offer to become an administrative assistant to a CEO of a local shipping company, I had told them I didn’t think I was qualified. The offices occupied the four uppermost floors of the twenty story building. Mr. Coleman’s domain was the top floor, and that was where I was destined to be assigned.

Vera’s gray hair twisted tightly at the nape of her neck and her pantsuit had been ironed to a razor edge. Every inch of her screamed professionalism and no-nonesense. She looked at me in the elevator with obvious disapproval. Please remember, Ms. Lane, that you are an administrative assistant, not a secretary. The older woman regarded me with disdain. She was starting to piss me off with her condescending attitude. If Mr. Coleman wants a real assistant, he doesn’t need to go to a temp agency. There are plenty of qualified employees already working here, Vera said with a tone that told me just what she thought of agency staff.

The elevator doors opened, and we stepped out into an opulent foyer with plush carpet, cushy chairs, and a breathtaking view. The entire city sprawled below. I gaped for a moment and glanced at Vera. She looked at the large desk that was presumably mine with
