Cafe Connection - J. Thiele
Chapter 1
Cheryl sat on the edge of her bed waiting to leave for work. She looked over her shoulder at Mark, who was still sleeping face down with one arm dangling over the side of the bed almost touching the floor. Sunlight was beaming through the blinds, filling the room with its rays. She wondered how he could sleep with so much light coming in. She shouldn’t be surprised, really. It’s not like he had a job to get up for, in fact, he hadn't worked for almost two years. He stayed up late watching Foxtel or went out with his friends until all hours, never showing any signs of guilt, shame or remorse about Cheryl being the breadwinner, and now he was a weed smoker as well. She was becoming more resentful as time passed, struggling to pay rent and working two casual jobs while he stayed home like a bum... He had no income of his own and expected her to budget for a bag of weed a week for him and his mates to indulge in. She hated the stuff herself and loathed supporting his filthy habits, but what choice did she have? She had no one else, no family to turn to, and Mark had forbidden her to have friends of her own. His jealousy led to arguments, and he’d taken to slapping her around when she argued back. She’d discovered that side of him when she’d resisted buying him pot the first time he'd insisted on it.
She arrived for her shift at the café a little before 7:30am, allowing enough time to have the staff allowance of a free coffee and a toasted sandwich for all shifts. One way she managed to cut down on expenses, was to take advantage of opportunities as they arose, and eating at work was one such opportunity.
She quickly consumed her breakfast and took her place behind the counter. Not long after she started, a Harley Davidson pulled into the parking bay out the front of the café windows. A tall, slender figure made its way inside. ‘What a soft, gentle face,’ she thought to herself, ‘Especially for a Harley rider, but by God, he was handsome in a boyish sort of way.'
Flat white thanks love,
the Harley rider said, as he reached into his leather vest for a wallet. Cheryl was taken aback by the pitch of the voice and embarrassed to notice the curve of a breast poke out from under the vest behind a white tee-shirt.
Sure,
she responded. Anything else?
Cheryl found herself intrigued by the presence of the unusual stranger.
That’s it thanks hon,
she said and made her way to the table by the window.
As Cheryl returned with the coffee, the butch spoke again extending her hand. The name’s Rhonda. I've just moved into the units down the road with a mate of mine. It's only temporary until I find my feet and a place of my own. You wouldn't happen to know of any places for rent around here would you?
Um no, not offhand,
Cheryl replied quickly.
Oh well, it doesn’t hurt to ask,
she shrugged nonchalantly
Cheryl knew there were two empty units in her complex. They’d been up for rent for a while, but she didn’t dare suggest them to the woman. ‘Mark would have a fit if he even thought she was making a friend, especially with a ‘lesbian.’ His narrow mind had them all jumping in the sack together with no clue on what real love was. His ‘cure’ for the abomination, was a good fuck with the right man, or a bullet.’
Anyway, you'll probably see me around here a fair bit, just killing time while the house-mate sleeps. She's a shift worker, and I'm trying to keep the noise down during the day, at least until after lunch, so she gets a good couple of hours rest without me banging around. So what’s your name poppet?
Cheryl giggled; she remembered her grandmother calling her that. It was such an old-fashioned term of endearment, yet Rhonda couldn’t have been more than a couple of years older than her.
Cheryl, but everyone just calls me Cher,
she smiled.
Cher it is then,
Rhonda reiterated.
Cheryl went back behind the counter to take her next customer’s order. She didn’t notice her Harley rider get up and leave, but she certainly heard her bike start up and rumble away. She found herself saddened that she left without
